UCLA vs So. Illinois Highlights
What can you say about the breakout game from Alfred Aboya? Check out his line for the game:
Aren't we happy Aboya decided to return for his senior season? Let's hope AA2 adds to his highlight reel as his final season unfolds.
Meanwhile, Drew Gordon gave us just a taste of his potential and never say die attitude with a monster block from behind on a play most would have given up on.
Ironically, the Salukis (btw, go here in case you don't know what a saluki is) would go on to tie the game at 48 following that play, but something must have finally clicked, as the Bruins went on an 18-2 run en route to a comfortable 77-60 win.

That was a true highlight reel play
but I wonder what CBH thought of it? I’m not sure he’s enamored of the flashy stuff.
Aboya simply looked great.

Watching it
It looks like JS made the only pass he could have made and DC made the right call giving it up to open AA2 for the easy 2. Just beautiful.

I agree with Nestor
I don’t think a more conventional pass would have been successful given what each guy was doing and where the defenders were. The passes looked very natural, not forced at all.

Wow Wow Wow
Those dunks of Aboya’s had some really bad intentions behind them.

Some thoughts
Watched the last 15 mins of the game last night. Here are some of my quick thoughts:
- What else can you say about AA2? I think Knight made a really good point about how AA2 was always putting himself in a great position to get those passes inside. He was being cerebral. Until now we have seen displays of brute force from our future President along w his intensity on defense. Last night, for the first time we saw the kid playing with an offensive mindset. Besides those thunder dunks, he was always there at the right place at the right time. He answered the question on why CBH loves him so much.
- ND is interesting to me. He again had a mixed game draining some clutch shots while forcing others. Yet he was on the floor because he was playing decent defense. I am starting to get optimistic about his long term prospect at UCLA.
- Great bounce back for DC and JS. They took charge last night and they played with focus and I absolutely loved DC’s gracious post game interview in which he gave all the credit to AA2.
- I am liking what I am seeing from our freshmen bigs. DG’s block was awesome. At the same time I can already see how JM will emerge as a scoring threat down low. He has a lot of natural moves.
- FTs. It’s a little early but still MR shouldn’t be shooting 1-4 from the FT line.
Over all, a great night for our Ben Ball warriors. What I also liked about last night was how they got better as the game went on. Definitely a step forward for all the young Warriors, a confidence booster for the veterans, and a nice building block for this season.
GO BRUINS.

RE Bobby Knight
I am usually not much of Bobby Knight fan, mostly because come march he is always picking us to lose! But, I was thoroughly impressed with his color commentary last night. He was insightful and actually imparted knowledge to the viewer. Such a huge contrast between him and that asshat Vitale, who just likes to blabber to hear himself speak.
Could you imagine Gus Johnson doing play by play with B Knight doing color, man that would be fun.

Gus Johnson + Bobby Knight = Announcing Heaven?
Could be… imho…

Knight was ok
But I can’t really develop a soft spot for a man who never misses a chance to take a pot shots at Coach (which he did the night before). Also hilariously during Friday night he mentioned how Morgan didn’t look so great the nigh before (of course JM didn’t get any mins the night before).

At about the 10 minute mark
in the second half, I finally started to see this team play with some chemistry, really for the 1st time all year. The two behind the back passes for a transition basket off a turnover really typified that. Chemistry and confidence, I think that is what this team has been missing so far.
This may not be Howland’s best team, but I think the argument can be made that it is his deepest. I think the pre-conference schedule coming up will allow some of that (young) depth to get some valuable PT.

The offense
I have seen only 1 and 1/2 game this year. From what I am seeing out there I see a team in which players are clearly getting used to each other.
I have to lol when I read comments about Howland needs to change his offense. Howland’s system at UCLA is so established at this point is that any changes to his offense would probably also entail adjustments to his defense? Why would we want to change a system that has clearly worked not only here in last three-four years or everywhere Howland has coached at?
What is essentially going on is right now our players are getting used to each other. They are “thinking” before their shots and passes. Once they get used to each other, I think they will become less mechanical and more fluid in how they operate as a team.
I am excited to see how these kid come along this year. This is why I love college basketball. It is fun to watch a team grow and develop under a great coach.

any thought to posting the entire game?

We would strongly recommend against that
just like we never cut and paste entire articles.

Thanks guys for always posting highlight clips!
I just graduated and moved back home to the bay area so I can’t watch any of the games at Pauley anymore and there will be times when I miss games like this one so it’s so nice to be able to see highlight clips of our boys playing. Thanks so much for all the videos and I hope you guys keep posting them! Love them!

Thanks, Folks...
I missed both this game and the Michigan game. I am not surprised that AA2 has started playing a dominating game…I just knew this Aboya was coming this season.
This is going to be a very exciting year.
Love My Bruins
