Duke Vitale Excludes Bruins From His Top-50 "Fabulous" Players/Moments in College Basketball
Vitale has a new book out. It's entitled, "Dick Vitale's Fabulous 50 Players and Moments in College Basketball." Guess what's missing from that book? (Not so) shockingly this joke of a book doesn't mention a single Bruin. On the flipside, North Carolina and Duke accounted for a combined 14 players in that list. Only 2 Pac-10 players are included in that lost: Sean Elliot at number 26 and Jason Kidd at 50. There is no mention of Ed O, Tyus, Reggie Miller, or Baron Davis. Not a single Bruin. And this guy gets paid hundreds of thousands as a lead basketball commentator on WWL? Tell me why again we should respect these clowns? GO BRUINS.

Buffoon
When Dork Vitale is calling a game, I immediately take Fox’s advice and turn the sound off. I find him 100% unlistenable. He’s a clown and a joke. I would expect nothing less than a book like this from him.
Pete Carroll wears ladies' clothes.
I'm usually incredibly tolerant of announcers
But Vitale is the one announcer I actually turn the sound off for.

He explained it during the game
Vitale said that the book only covers the 50 best players in the past 20 or something like that, and if it was of all time it would have had UCLA players. He mentioned UCLA have had great player recently, like Ed O’bannon but they didn’t make the cut.
I am annoyed by him too, but I doubt he is stupid enough to exclude Bill Walton and Lew Alcindor if it was an all time top 50.
Last 20 years
So why did he excluded Ed O, Tyus Edney, Baron Davis, Earl Watson, Jordan Farmar, Arron Afflalo? He has no excuses. Note the players I mentioned above were Bruins from post Wooden era.
You really think
Jordan Farmar is one of the 50 best college basketball players over the last 30 years? Come on. He was a nice player and all but he wasn’t really around long enough to make his mark on the college game. I know he lead the team to the national championship during his last year but they got back to the Final Four twice without him. I think his list is probably more about what the players did during college more so than what type of players they are so for the same reason Baron couldn’t be on the list because he wasn’t around long enough. It just is too bad that we weren’t very good for most of the time period he was considering. I do think that either O’Bannon should be in there because he was a great player for a team that won a national championship. A case can maybe made for Don MacLean too because of where he ranks in the lore of UCLA history as our all-time scorer but his teams weren’t that great either until his senior year when they got to the Elite-8.
A case can surely be made for Jordan
If Jason Kidd is in that list.
Kidd’s major contribution to college hoops in last 20 years was to make an irrelevant program somewhat relevant and then beating Duke in Steve-16. He then jumped to the pros and Cal went back to becoming what it was … an average to mediocre program.
All Jordan did was become one of the key cornerstones of one of the more amazing and total turn around rebuilding efforts in college basketball’s recent history. He was the floor general of a team, which turned an 11 win program into a tourney team into his first year and followed it up with a conference championship, conference tourney championship and a trip to the Final game, highlighted by the Gonzaga game, which probably is one of the top-20 moments (Vitale left out) in college basketball’s recent history.
If you can’t appreciate that perspective, you are hanging out in the wrong community.
excuses
I also remember his attempt to explain himself with this book, and more notably why he isn’t the east-coast biased commentator that many claim him to be. Maybe if he stopped lollygagging around North Carolina schools and made it out to the west (or at least stayed up long enough to watch it), he wouldn’t be in this predicament. There is no respect regardless of how he tries to put it.
….and, I believe he stated that the players included on the list were only ones that have played since his start in his sports broadcasting career…but no excuses regardless
GO BRUINS!!! CHEER LIKE CHAMPIONS!!!
Is this players AND moments?
If so, UCLA-Gonzaga 2006 is an absolute lock for a top 50 moment if this book is to have any credibility.
How about UCLA-Missouri 1995?
Seriously … even Pucin called this book out and we know how much she knows about hoops. Howland is so gracious he will never say anything bad about Vitale or other national announcers. But I can only imagine what he really thinks about this book. What a joke.
Or UCLA v Cincinnati in 2002?
Cincinnati was a prohibitive favorite to win it all that year. One of Bob Huggins better teams during his time with Cinci.
A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment. John Wooden
Vitale in '95
crowed about Nolan Richardson and how the Hogs would handle the Bruins. He and Phelps probably hurt more than Richardson did after the O’Bannons, Zidek, Dollar, Toby, et al, destroyed the Arkies.
Despite all of his posturing, he has always had a strong east coast (ACC) bias, and he’s even more obnoxious than Packer.

Not surprising
I remember what a douchebag he was during the UCLA blowout of his precious Duke that season. You know, the same season that Coach K came down with some heart problem and stepped away and had his assistant take all those losses so that they would not be on his record. Anyways, during the blowout Brent Musberger commented that this Bruins team looks like they’ll be cutting down the nets in April and that blowhard started saying, “I don’t know… looks better.” Not to mention during the blowout that Dukie V started whining about the blowout and “warning” that UCLA shouldn’t beat the Devils that bad or else there will be repercussions.
What a #$#$@
leave the man alone
we live in a free market and obviously his publisher told him to east-coast-bias the book to sell more copies. if i want to hear about kareem and wooden, i read kareem’s books and wooden’s books. vitale can’t compete with these guys when it comes to writing.
What's not "free market" about this?
He can write whatever he wants in his books, and we are free to write why we think his book stinks in an attempt to reduce its sales. He is not entitled to positive feedback.
I think it would be a lot more productive, and a lot better read...
to discuss the merits of specific UCLA players over the past 20 years, along with an argument as to why they’re better than the other players selected to Vitale’s list. Most of the past 20 years has been a down period for UCLA basketball, but I’m sure a case can be made for a player or two during that period (although I do suspect they’d be in the bottom half of the list).
It was more surprising to hear that no Arizona players from the past 20 years made the list as it was a relatively bright period for them – with quite a few all-americans.
Vitale has been a joke for longer than I can remember
I know of no one who thinks he has an ounce of sense or basketball knowledge. I have never heard him utter any remotely intelligent thing about basketball, but then once I hear his dulcet tones, I turn the sound off instantly. He is the only guy worse than Tim McCarver.
That said, his book is irrelevant. It will be bought by the idiots who think civilization ends at the Hudson River.
Nobody is worse than Tim McCarver.
Maybe I’m just saying that because baseball is my sport, but I’m pretty sure that he has that position locked down.

Just like the BCS
Until there is an actual playoff for worst announcer, we will always be having this debate. I think the actual worst announcer should have to win distinction on the field, not based on some polls.
Lesson to learn
Don’t ever listen to a blowhard on WWL who hasn’t done anything notable other than come up with blowhard loud-mouth “catchphrases.”
He’s a guy who has a lifetime record of 112-90. A guy who made it to the Sweet Sixteen. Once. To put that in perspective, even that retard Lavin has done better: the Lizard was 145-78 and made it to five Sweet Sixteens. (CBH, on the other hand is 294-144 and has been to two Sweet Sixteens, two Final Fours, and one title game).
In short, Lavin was a better coach than Dickie V. So, tell me again, why in the hell would anyone listen to anything that bald midget moron would say?
Speaking of Lavin
When I pulled up his record, I found this interesting tidbit on his Wikipedia page:
Despite being dismissed by the University over five years ago, there is still a large and active internet-based Steve Lavin Fan Club known as “The Lavinistas”. This contingent of supporters are now the most vocal critics of UCLA’s new coach. Ben Howland has led UCLA to three straight Final Fours, yet the Lavinistas have criticized him for not winnning “the Big One,” the national championship.
I thought to myself: “no way can this be true…there cannot be Bruin fans that f**king retarded out there.”
So I did a bit of Google research and I couldn’t find either a Steve Lavin Fan Club page or a page for the Lavinistas. In fact, the first page on the Google search for either term is the Wikipedia page itself.
I figured if there truly was a “large and active internet-based” Lavin fan club, it’d be easy to find with Google. But alas, nothing could be found. Although, part of me wishes it was true, so I’d be able to have a group of people serve as the perfect example of complete and total stupidity. So, Lavinistas, if you’re real, please come on over to BN. We could use a good laugh at your expense.
Hmm, looks like someone has been editing his Wikipedia entry. Tisk tisk Lizard of Westwood.
Anyone can update Wikipedia
I wouldn’t put it past CHP to have added that himself.

DId Lavin ever win “the big one”? or even come close? Either this isn’t serious or there are some SUC fans posing as Bruins

Depends on what your definition of "the big one" is
If you mean a Coach K Championship (Sweet 16 appearance) then yes he has.
He wouldn't call himself a Lavinista, but

good lord
that might be the least knowledgable blog i’ve ever read in my life – and that’s a pretty impressive distinction. That guy honestly expected Gordon and Morgan to start right off the bat? And Lee to be the 6th man? He really knows nothing about basketball in general….what a joke.

Good catch, B-etc.
The great Dickie V has a worse record than the worst coach in recent memory. That puts things in perspective. Dickie has shown that you don’t actually have to know anything to be a success as a basketball announcer.
it's true
Dickie V really has no credentials. People like him because he’s a good personality and shows such great enthusiasm for the game. Personally, as long as he’s not calling a game involving UCLA, then I can tolerate him. I do like his passion; and of course his catchphrases.
But as soon as he calls a game involving a team i care about, off goes the sound. He just makes such stupid comments sometimes.

Duke Vitale is biased...
.. no doubt about it. In his little universe, college basketball begins and ends with Duke – UNC. His opinions on basketball are seriously deficient.
However, one thing I do have to give him credit for is the strong support he gives to the Jimmy V fund for cancer research.
Bob O. (Signholder #3)
The Formula
seems to require some doddering marginal ex-coach to play the fool, so guys like Dukie and Corso continue to work.
National Championships
Considering that Duke and North Carolina have each won more titles in the last thirty years than all of the Pac-10 and just as many as the whole west coast, I’d say they’ve had some better players.
Oh yea and 13.5 Points per game, 5.1 ast per game, 3.6 TO per, 1.1 stl per, and shooting 41% from field, with 33.3% from 3. Do those sound like top 50 stats to you. And that was Jordan Farmar’s best year. Ouch!
