UCLA vs. Cal Baptist- The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The Good

Josh Shipp- Take a look at his line, 7-8 FG, 3-4 3PT, 20 points in 19 minutes and you're impressed, but the line only tells part of the story. We heard all offseason about how Shipp was healthy for the first offseason in a while so he'd be in better shape than ever before and how he'd lost weight to get quicker. Well, all of that was on display against Cal Baptist as he showed the quickness he had in his freshman year as well as a quicker release and more lift on his jump shot than ever before.

Jrue Holiday- We knew Holiday would step in and contribute right away, but little did we know how many ways he'd contribute. He finished the game with 12 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 7 assists as he was all over the court and involved in what seemed like every play. He showed great court awareness and his vision in the open court was fantastic as he showed why he's projected to be a point guard in the NBA:

Defensively he needs to improve his footwork, but he showed a willingness to get after it on that side of the ball so with Howland's coaching it shouldn't be long before he's a shut down defender.

Malcolm Lee- Yes his play on offense showed how raw he is, but his play on defense was a thrill to watch:

He's quick, long and loves to get into his man's face. He needs to get stronger or elite players will expose him in the post, but he can create havoc defensively. His defensive play should earn him more minutes this season than most anticipated he'd get this year.

J'mison Morgan- Does his footwork need to improve? Yes. Does he need to develop some post moves? Yes. Is he oozing with talent?

Yes, yes, yes. Morgan has quick feet, soft hands and surprising awareness for a freshman. The kid brought down 9 rebounds in only 19 minutes due to a nose for the ball, good explosion and a willingness to put his body on a man.

Nikola Dragovic- The junior not only showed an ability to drain shots from long range (4-6 from 3), but hustle on the defensive end that we haven't seen before. Dragovic was hustling all over the court and showed a better understanding of team defense than in past years as he was solid in his rotations and jumped screens well.

Uptempo Offense- I know we've heard from Howland about how he wanted to push the ball up court before, but we should see a more uptempo offense than ever before this year. Every time we got the ball, whether via turnover, rebound or made basket Howland was yelling "push, push, push" or "go, go, go." We have a lot of guys who can handle the ball which should make it easier to push the ball and even our big guys run the court extremely well. Don't be surprised if the Bruins lead the conference in fastbreak points.

No Injuries- After Collison went down in the first game last year, don't take an injury free game for granted.

The Bad

Michael Roll- It could easily be attributed to having essentially missed an entire season, but Roll did not look good at all tonight. Roll finished 2-7 from the field and by my count was 1-3 on layups. The supposed sharp shooter was 0-2 from behind the arc and looked slow on defense. Again, the guy has barely played in the last 17 months so a turnaround is not only possible, but likely.

PA Announcer- Talk about a guy in preseason form. I counted six times that he had to correct himself and there were a couple other times where he made a mistake and didn't correct himself. I guess the exhibition games are a warm up for everyone.

The Ugly

The New 3 Point Line- It may just take time to get used to it, but a second 3 point line only 12 inches behind the first looks very strange. It was an exhibition game that we won by 28 so there's not much else that fits in this category.
