Walker Keeping NMSU Option Open?
Per Dohn:
UCLA defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker spoke with New Mexico State for a second time this past weekend about the school's vacant head coaching position, according to sources.
Walker has not had a face-to-face meeting about becoming coach of the Aggies, but remains interested in learning more about the position, sources added.
Also as I fanshotted yesterday, it looks like Walker hasn't completely closed the LSU door either.
I imagine we are going to have more on this before the bowl season is over.
If any of you are keeping your eyes on papers out of LA and NM, let us know if you spot something new.
GO BRUINS.

My two cents
DW doesn’t need my help or advice, but I still think jobs like this (NMSU) offer good opportunities to be used as stepping stones to eventually getting hired at big-time programs (although, like others, I would avoid the cursed San Diego Stinking State job at all costs).
On the other hand, if you do well at LSU as a DC, that will put you in the spotlight, too.
I hope he stays, but if he does leave, all the best to him.

Walker will get his shot...
…but an AD will (in most instances) hire a guy who has at least some head coaching experience. Remember when DG was looking for our coach? One of the first criteria was previous head coaching experience. I realize that this is a conundrum because if you only hire people with experience, then the pool of qualified applicants will never grow.
Let’s be honest, Walker’s best chance at a HC position is take a program like NMSU and show that he can run a good, clean, program that makes improvements from year to year. How do you think Urban Meyer (and Howland!) got such attractive coaching jobs?
Look, I like Walker…a lot. I hope he stays on as our DC. But, it’s a great testament to our program if we can turn coordinators into HC’s…it makes our coordinator positions that much more attractive. And as we know, coordinators are almost as important as HC’s, not only for on the field strategy but for recruiting. Worst case scenario would be in Walker left UCLA and flopped as a head coach. It’s not impossible to turn a program like NMSU around…you just need support and good recruiting pipelines. And judging by the loyalty that last year’s recruits showed towards Walker, I’m sure he’ll have no problem in that area.
Go Bruins.

Changing Systems, Again
If DW finds the right job and leaves, he will have most of our blessings and wishes for success.
I know CRN will find the right replacement.
My only concern is that we will have another “new scheme” and system to learn. I hesitate to think of how many coordinators we’ve had in the last several seasons.

future updates on this
Hey Guys, I’m a bruin fan that lives in southern new mexico, that is also a nmsu fan. I can tell you for sure, people are desperate for a winner. NMSU is in the WAC, so it does give an up and coming coach some opportunities. People will come but they have been dissaoointed for years. When Reggie Theus came here a couple of years ago as the head basketball coach and won, he was treated as a rock star. Walker is currently the favorite according to local polls, in the paper.
