Center Court: Ben Ball (Wyoming) Open Thread
Wyoming Cowboys at UCLA Bruins, Dec 23, 2008 7:30 PM PST
Here we go. Let's head into the day before Christmas with another night with our Ben Ball warriors.
JS is out of action for another game (as he will mostly likely be out at least till the conference season). So once more MR and other young guns from this year's edition of Ben Ball warriors will have a chance to step up tonight:
A big note heading into this game: revenge. As Class of 66 reminded us getting a victory tonight will mean a measure of "revenge" for an upset loss the Wyoming Cowboys handed the UCLA Bruins back in 1987, when Walt Hazzard's 15th-ranked Bruins lost a second round in Salt Lake City by a score of 68-78. You can check our full game coverage/notes here.
The tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm PST. Once again it will be broadcast on FSN Prime Ticket. You can track it via the official site.
Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

Bless My Slingbox
We are in Bodega Bay in a house we rented for a few days. Big Screen TV, some kind of dish — and no Bruin basketball. So, Slingbox relays the game from my Houston cable box.
And, it is very cold up here! I love it. Just hope the Bruins are hot.

Slingbox sounds like a good solution
Apparently, my new phone will play slingbox feeds. If the cable providers in northern california were to broadcast UCLA games with reliability, I would buy a slingbox for one of my parents for this purpose.
For what it is worth, I am in Oakland now, and it is very cold here as well.

I love Slingbox!
Essential as a bay area sports fan in LA. Also, UCLA games should be on TV in the bay area with regularity. In the past few years, I think I can only remember one that I wasn’t able to watch up here, except for exhibitions.

Wyoming has the ugliest uniforms I've ever seen
Just tuned in a few minutes ago — team looks great so far.

This is the best I've seen us play all year
Take out those first 5 minutes, when Wyoming looked incredible, we have played amazing defense. This is the best offense I’ve seen all year. Keep it up.

I'm watching the online feed
But it can’t be right. Do we really have 47 pts w/ 4 mins to go in the 1st half?

Yes! It's been an up and down game

Incredible, I know
we have been shooting lights out. Roll has stayed hot, Malcolm Lee has made a couple 3’s, Darren is looking excellent, Aboya is playing well… just a great performance against a pretty solid Wyoming team.

it does
That’s what I’m watching, but my internet connection here in the hospital is inconsistent, so the video isn’t the best quality. I thought I was seeing things!

it is the feed
I have it going as well, as does another friend. The picture quality just isn’t good. But still very glad to have it available.

They are shooting 57%. Still don't have our lock down D
but they shot 1000 for the first few minutes, so it took a while to start bringing them down.

Get the broiler fired up
I wonder if the Westwood Burger King still gives out free whoppers if the Bruins score over 100?

I was about to ask
if they still offer free Chipotle burritos if we get over 100? In my 4 years there, we never once got there. It’d be a shame (but a great one) if we got there the year after i graduate.

Unless it's changed within the past year
it’s Chipotle burritos now, at least for the students who present a “Dirt from the Den” handout from the game.

I have always been a huge fan of Roll
and I am glad he is finally giving me a reason as to why I’ve always been such a fan. Past 3 and a half games have been excellent.

That is, without a doubt,
one of the best halves I have ever seen UCLA play. Not just this season, but in the whole Howland era.
Okay, maybe I’m overreacting a little bit, but WOW. First time we have really looked like a Top 10 team. Just, awesome.
Mike Roll is shooting the lights out. If he can keep that up… wow. Malcolm Lee looks great, our double teams and hedging on defense and rebounding are all solid. Turnovers, fastbreak buckets, free throws (Aboya is 3 for 4 on FT’s). Just, excellent half.
To be up by 25 (25!!) against a very good 9-1 Wyoming team.. bravo. Keep up the effort in the second half.

I'vebeen mostly happy with our defense
Since Wyoming’s amazing start. Certainly 34 points in a half is way too much, especially against a mid-major, but our defense improved significantly throughout the half.

mike roll is sick
seriously… Howland should keep starting Roll even when shipp is back… just throw him in when we have matchup problems… shipp gives up as many backdoors as smush parker… i’d rather have the white kid who can shoot the lights out
by deelu on Dec 23, 2008 8:28 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I was thinking Roll would be better as the starter too
But Dohn says that Howland likes Shipp’s defensive rebounding ability so Shipp will remain the starter when he’s back.

some halftime stats
Wyoming is shooting 52% at 13-25. Take out their 7-7 start and they are 6-19, or 31%.
We are 21-33, or a 64% clip. Even more incredible, our 3-pt FG: 67%! 8-12. If you take out Jrue’s 0-3 (who seems to be the only Bruin struggling on offense today) we have barely missed a shot.
Roll with 18, DC with 15, Malcolm Lee 8!, Aboya 7… nice

Both Howland and Donny Mac mention JS's leadership role
But, Roll is a leader, too.

And, Roll plays D, too
CBH will do the right thing and we will see more MR this year.
If JS doesn’t get his shooting touch back, will see MR when we need more scoring.
Wonder if he can stay this hot if he plays less?

Will Roll be able to defend small forwards in Pac-10 play?
That’s an open question. I have no idea what the answer might be.
by insomniacslounge on Dec 23, 2008 8:34 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Gotta wonder where all the minutes will come from though
With Darren and Jrue getting a lot of minutes at the 1 and 2, and Malcolm and Jerime probably getting more and more minutes… then Josh and Roll getting minutes, too… It will be interesting to see how the PT distribution plays out.
I think Roll will be a huge asset to our team, especially against teams that employ a zone defense against us. But I am worried about Roll playing the 3. Shipp has the size that Roll does not.

On another note...
Is the dance team just wearing plain white “wife-beaters” (tank tops)?

I'm looking for something to criticize
but we have come very close to taking several charges today, that have all resulted in blocking fouls. That’s about the only thing I can really criticize. That, and Jrue’s, shall we say, “subpar” shooting tonight.
Can’t wait to see the freshmen getting quality minutes tonight.

Jrue is too valuable as a defender
Roll’s D has improved a lot, but Jrue is our best defender (says Coach Howland). To Howland, defense > offense any day.

the biggest asset he has
is that he can make his own shot. 2 years ago he was a great passer and a great shooter. Now he can take the pass, take a couple dribbles and drain the mid-range or short-range jumper. Makes him a huge threat.

can we break 100 today?
would that be the highest scoring game for ucla under howland?
by deelu on Dec 23, 2008 9:00 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
As far as I can recall
we have not hit 100 points in the past 4 and a half years. Unless we hit it in Howland’s first year, or I am forgetting a game, it would be a first (at least for a non-exhibition game).

No 100 under Howland
We had 96 vs Washington in 2007, 95 vs the same team in 2005.
We’ve had 100+ in 2 exhibition games.
