[UPDATED] Congrats To Dewayne Walker ...

... if the following report from New Mexico State's rival.com site is true:

CI.com has learned that NMSU's A.D. McKinley Boston and coach Walker signed a contract at 4:30pm today making Walker NMSU's next head coach of Aggie football.

We are expecting NMSU to make a formal, official announcement on coach Walker's hiring on Tuesday.

Congratulations to coach DeWayne Walker and NMSU!

May be there will be an official statement later today. We will keep updating this post throughout the day once we start getting more info.

Interestingly, per that report as well as Painter's report Walker might be coming in with another coach who will be his OC:

Timm Rosenbach, the former quarterbacks coach at Washington State, was interviewing for an assistant coaching job at the same time Walker was there, according to the Las Cruces Sun-News. Sources indicated that New Mexico State wants to pair an offensive-minded coach with Walker, further solidifying that Walker appears to have the job if he wants it.

Does Rosenbach name sound familiar to you? It should:

I will never forget that game.

Anyway, let's see if there are other sources which confirm this story. If so, we wanted to extend our congratulations to Coach Dewayne Walker.

Of course once everything is official we will stat tracking DC candidates/possibilities as well. We have already had those discussions here on BN. You can search through the archives to see some of the names that have popped up. I am sure there will be more with Kenny way way way way way back in the line with his little thin resume.

GO BRUINS.

UPDATE I (N): Tracy Pierson at Bruin Report Online also picks the story and offers up two names as potential replacements:

Speculation about who will replace Walker as UCLA's defensive coordinator is rampant.

A name we've heard is current Montana Head Coach Bobby Hauck. Hauck, who has had success at Montana, is the brother of current UCLA defensive backs coach, Tim Hauck. Hauck worked on Neuheisel's staff at both Washington and Colorado.

This doesn't mean that Hauck is the leading candidate -- or even a known candidate. His name has merely been mentioned in UCLA football circles.

Ricky Hunley, the former college and NFL coach, is also a name mentioned. Hunley currently works as an assistant to Norm Chow.

I believe both of those names have surfaced here on BN. rye already mentioned Hunley's name in the comment threads. Bobby Hauck's name has been mentioned in previous posts which also includes the names of Tim Hundley and Chuck Bullough, the current DL LB coach under Walker who has done a solid job last three years. GO BRUINS.

UPDATE II (N): Here is the LA Times story on Dewayne Walker becoming the next head coach for NMSU. As expected CRN congratulated Walker and lavished his former assistant with much deserved praise:

UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel said in a statement, "DeWayne is a first-class coach and a first-class man who certainly deserves the opportunity to run his own program. DeWayne has been a terrific asset to UCLA, both on and off the field, and he will be missed. I, and the entire UCLA family, thank him for what he has done for our program and wish him well."

Also not surprisingly CRN signaled in the same report that he has a plan in place:

UCLA's search to replace Walker began before Tuesday's confirmation that he had been hired away.

"I hope to fill the defensive coordinator position in the next few weeks," Neuheisel said in his statement. "Because I felt there was an excellent chance DeWayne would get a head coaching opportunity, I have a list of candidates for the position."

Linebackers coach Chuck Bullough and defensive line coach Todd Howard could be considered as coordinator.

Can't wait to find out who our next DC is going to be. GO BRUINS.

UPDATE III (N): Here is CRN's full statement that was released from UCLA congratulating Walker:

"I am thrilled for DeWayne and his family. It’s an exciting time for New Mexico State and an exciting time for UCLA, because one of our coaches has earned the opportunity to be a head coach. I have no doubt he will enjoy success at New Mexico State.

"DeWayne is a first-class coach and a first-class man who certainly deserves the opportunity to run his own program. DeWayne has been a terrific asset to UCLA, both on and off the field, and he will be missed. I, and the entire UCLA family, thank him for what he has done for our program and wish him well.

"I hope to fill the defensive coordinator position in the next few weeks. Because I felt there was an excellent chance DeWayne would get a head coaching opportunity, I have a list of candidates for the position. Nothing will occur until the staff reconvenes on Sunday and we discuss the candidates together. Our first priority is to continue to build an outstanding recruiting class."

Also you can read the Daily News report here. Guess there will be a formal press conference in New Mexico tomorrow. GO BRUINS.

UPDATE IV (N): Here is the official press release from New Mexico State via Jill Painter in the Daily News:

Walker will be introduced as the Aggies' 33rd head football coach this morning at a news conference scheduled for 10:00 a.m. (Mountain Time). More details here. GO BRUINS.

You're on a roll N

Thank You Coach Walker for all that you’ve done. This is well deserved. I wish you and your family the best and I’ll be rooting for you and your program.

by BlueReign on Dec 30, 2008 10:08 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

he will be missed

Its one of those situations where you wish he would never leave, but you just know that is not realistic. He is too good a coach to stay a coordinator forever. He did a lot to help turn this program around, and I hope hope that Coach Neu will bring in a home run coach and recruiter to make sure that we can continue to progress and win the recruiting battles. Speaking of which, I hope that this does not adversely effect our current defensive recruit’s decisions. But I trust there are “more than enough positives at UCLA to interest recruits and convince them that this is the school at which they can flourish both academically and athletically.” So we should be okay.

Best Wishes to CDW

Glad the soap opera is over and he has found the head coaching job he wanted.

He did a great job as DC, especially considering two of his three years were under the extremely disfunctional KD regime. He added some stability and hope through some of the darkest times in the program, and his retention this year provided CRN with a nice bridge to get the 2008recruiting class solidified and focus on the big picture.

Thank you CDW.

May be Kenny will apply for the NMSU DC job?

There ya go. And I just started a rumor … which Kenny can whine about to Gary Klein.

Oh no watch out Nestor

you’ll be sourced as “UCLA” in the paper of record before you know it!!

Congratulations Coach!

It couldn’t happen to a nicer, more deserving guy. I wish you all the best in the years to come. NMSU has landed a tireless worker, recruiter and a true football mind. I don’t doubt you will soon make drastic improvements in their win/loss columns.

Thank you for everything you have done for UCLA. From restoring our defense to reaching out to youngsters on the recruiting trail, and for the integrity you displayed before, during, and after the coaching search to replace Coach Dorrell. You will always be a Bruin in my book.

TBS -- The All Time Biggest Loser

Burn a bridge one day and have a great job open up the next.

But, oops, no path to that great job because you destroyed the path.

No, you would not have been the DC, but you might have gotten a job a bit better than the lap dog/flack catcher position you now hold.

Recruiting Question:

Didn’t CRN find a staff position for Eric Scott? Is he still involved in our recruiting?

Congrats and best wishes

If this story is true, best wishes to Coach Walker.

And, as 66 noted, it’s never wise to burn bridges.

Kenny might have been in position for the UCLA DC job. CRN’s statement clearly indicates he is (rightfully) out of the running. If he had been offered the DC job and accepted it, and then done well, he might have been in position to be a head coach somewhere someday, a la CDW.

What a shame.

In all fairness, wasn’t Kenny considered for the HC position @ NMSU? Thought he turned down an interview. But I could have misread it.

by impaulv on Dec 30, 2008 2:40 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

If so, my bad

I wasn’t aware of that. Seems to me he would have been crazy to turn down a chance at that job, given his current position.

by Barnes2JJ on Dec 30, 2008 2:47 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Or it could be

Now that I think about Kenny might have floated that rumor just like we hear Lavin’s name whenever a job opens up in college ranks (ofcourse everyone knows Lavo is a poser but his journalist buddies are always happy to float his name out there if you know what I mean).

by Nestor on Dec 30, 2008 4:08 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Haha

I wonder if Lavin has ESPN or other “sports journalists” on speed dial to tip them off as to his possible consideration :-)

Keep an eye on the name Ricky Hunley

He was hired as an administrative assistant when CRN took over because there wasn’t any room on the staff. Hunley coached at USC, Missouri and Florida before moving onto the NFL and working with Washington and Cincinnati. Hunley has too much experience to be an administrative assistant and I figured when we hired him that he was just sticking around the program until Walker left.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Dec 30, 2008 1:26 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I remember that beast...

In the early 80s, he was the best linebacker in the nation, played for Arizona and was a relentless monster of a player. Neuheisel was the QB in 1983 when UCLA lost to them. But, as many of you may recall, Hunley’s UA team then upset ASU, helping to put us in the Rose Bowl.

So there is a history of sorts there and he will fully understand the dynamics of PAC-10 rivalries etc. Many UA fans and media consider Hunley even better than Bruschi, indeed, Hunley is the only UA player in the CFB Hall of Fame. If he can impart even half of that talent and relentless defensive aggression he had as a player on the kids under his tutelage, he’ll be a superstar of a coach.

Easy money and faithless women, red-eye whiskey for the pain...

Nice Synopsis of Hunley!

Thanks for filling us in. I will be more excited for the new season if CRN appoints Hunley to DC.

i wouldn't be surprised

if CRN looked into a coach with an NFL backround, ala DW (and NC). Seeing as we got DW from the Redskins (secondary coach), I would expect CRN to at least look at candidates in similar positions.

Good luck DW, it was great having you here.

2 things

1. Nestor…thanks…thanks for NOTHING for posting that video. I was there. First row behind the band. Four downs from the 6. I died that day. I finally got over it about a week ago, maybe 10 days, at the most. And then there it is again. Ow…….

2. More importantly, congrats and best wishes to HCDW. I hope he has great success with NMSU (a relative term). While I think we will be fine from a schematic/X’s and O’s standpoint, I also think that losing him now is (at least temporarily) detrimental to recruiting and establishing the identitiy of this program going forward. I’m looking forward to seeing how CRN handles this. Maybe he has some pull with D coaches with the Ravens…

I think its great

that CRN is looking at both of these guys as possible dc candidates. as soon as i heard walker was leaving i figured these guys were going to go with him, since when he came he brought them in too. Both have the same hard-nosed attitude as walker and have shown they maximize the potential of our players i.e. Hickman, Davis, Harwell, and Price on the line and Taylor, “Pick” Neal, and Carter. I trust CRN to make the right decision and i also hope he is able to retain these position coaches.

TBS "Turned Down" NMSU? Can someone substantiate this?

I’ve been searching the ’net to see whether he was actually offered the job and turned it down. Or, whether he actually interviewed for the job and withdrew his name.

The most I could find were some rumors that (1) he had gone to New Mexico to interview; and (2) that he withdrew his name from the process.

However, I can find nothing to substantiate that he actually interviewed. And, nothing to substantiate that he received and actual offer that he turned down.

Maybe one of you with better research skills can find a real source to support the interview and/or offer.

If not, I’m wondering if this “I was offered the HC job and turned it down” story is but another TBS fantasy just like the one about CRN telling people we would hire TBS if DW left.

Thanks Coach Walker for keeping many of the games interesting the last couple of years and good luck. I’m now a supporter of New Mexico State unless they play UCLA.

One of my pictures from practices was used again…awesome. I would have got some more pictures, but they wouldn’t let me in my camera at the rosebowl. Below is one from the Tennessee game from my camera phone from my seats. I hate that USC lover Mark May.

Hope NM State Does Well

If memory serves, there was discussion in Bruins Nation re a Long Beach article about how Petey’s underlings fall flat on their faces when they take the next step in their coaching careers.

I have not really had any reason to care about NM State football one way or another, but I really hope that DW does well there. This would help CRN’s reputation as a builder of coaches as well as players, which can only help going forward.

by islandbruin on Dec 31, 2008 8:30 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Sincere best wishes to Coach Walker

In the past I referred to CRN, NC and DW as the Kirk, Spock and McCoy of the Bruins.

However, to stretch my Trek-geekness further, DW was probably also our Riker to He-who-shall-not-be-named’s more stoic Picard.

Younger, more approachable, more eager to get in the thick of things — that was our No. 1, our XO, Dewayne Walker.

Yes, I would have loved for him to stay, but mainly for selfish reasons, specifically to continue to mold and anchor our never-quit defense. We may have had some blowouts the past couple of years, and the spread may have still spread us too thin at times, but no one can deny the aggressiveness, toughness, talent and improved fundamentals he brought to our team as a whole.

And yes, I certainly did NOT want him to be our head coach last year, not after we had another first-time head coach at the reins. That being said, for Walker to go to:

(a) a smaller program,
(b) not too far from his built-in recruiting base,
© in a non-BCS conference,
(d) with a promising young OC ready to join him…

…looks like a pretty good move for a first-time HC. You may not want to give your child a Mercedes the same day they get their license, but that doesn’t mean you can’t give him a good small car to rack up a lot of miles on.

Thank you, Coach Walker, for adding some genuine fire, excitement and talent to our re-emerging program, and for handling the hiring of CRN with class and professionalism. Best of luck to you and your family on this new adventure.

God speed.

Conspiracy Theory No. 23789-B

1. CRN knew that DW would get the NMSU job

2. CRN told Kenny that DW would get the NMSU job and that he would be a candidate for the DC job

3. Kenny, interested in the UCLA DC job, declined to interview for the NMSU HC job

4. Petey got a whiff of what was about to happen (even if CRN didn’t tell Kenny anything, Petey did a pre-emptive strike…and we all love those don’t we)

5. Petey “sugessted” that Kenny go to the press to clear the air (i.e. made him an offer he couldn’t refuse)

6. Kenny the poodle went along with the Sith’s wishes

7. Bridges burned. Loser: Kenny. Winner: CRN (and Petey, unfortunately)

The gentleman in all this? DeWayne Walker (and CRN too, of course). I really wish Coach Walker a successful stint at NMSU, I hope he does for them what he did for our defense. He is a good coach, good recruiter and a great person. Thank you for being a great ambassador and representative for UCLA.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

And, by the way, I have officially ended my research into what the Turner Broadcasting network (TBS) has to do with all this. Oh, the boxer’s son. Not to do with Ted Turner, but with Simon & Garfunkel. Do they teach Abbreviationomics in law school, 66 and Fox?

Good Luck to Coach Walker

All of us who have started working for others and ended up working for ourselves know how strong the flame to do it on your own can burn. DW, may your flame be steady, long of life, and bright (do you think this message has been influenced by Hanukah?)

Your time has come and I am pleased you have this opportunity.

What I will remember most about your tenure here is your passion and enthusiasm and the fact that you had to be the beacon of intensity in someone else’s program. I will also remember the fact that, even though you did not get the job you wanted, you were a stand up team mate to CRN and NC.

Like all here, I will be cheering for you and your team.

Rocky Long

There are many here who love Rocky Long. And, we know that CRN respects him.

But, some times love isn’t enough. A while back, Nestor mentioned that converting to RL’s system might take a year or two — and it might be that CRN does not feel he has time to rebuild on the D side of the ball.

Or, it may be that, as rye has pointed out, CRN brought in the replacement when he came last year.

Or, it may be that RL prefers the SD job over ours for personal or professional reasons.

Going down Tasser’s path, one can speculate that knowing that DW would be gone, CRN and RL talked and that it was decided that RL would not come here. Pure speculation.

The bottom line: NC and CRN know what we need to play the D that will win a conference championship — and they will bring in someone who can get the job done.

Love/Hate with DW

I think DW definitely had his strong points, but in the long run, I’ve always felt he was a tad bit overrated. Granted, we didn’t have the greatest head coach in Dorrell, but the defense always seemed to follow steller games against great opponents with terrible performances against “gimme” games. Obviously New Mexico sees him as a good fit for their program, but I feel like UCLA is capable of filling in the DC position with an even better DC.

I also believe last year where he was posturing and dropping little hints to the media about becoming UCLA’s head coach even before Dorrell was fired left a sour taste in my mouth. I know for a fact it left all of you good people at BN with the same feeling.

Good luck, DW.

Big Cudos to DW

Well deserved and well earned.

I, for one, will be secretly rooting for the Aggies to do well.

Lets hope we don’t meet them in some dumpy bowl game next year but I suspect it will take DW and his assistants to turn that program around in 2 or 3 years. By then we should be in the National Championship picture hopefully.

Happy New Year to all.

Be safe out there.

Much good will come to the Bruin Nation in 09.
