the student section at tomorrows game

if on campus has been any indication of what tomorrow's student section is going to be like, im going to warn all you bruin faithful not to get your hopes up. There are people who cannot go for various reasons, including finals and whatnot, but literally cannot give them away for free because nobody wants them. The scheduling for this years game is really terrible and it is a shame that us students cant make it out there because of finals (or a wedding in my case).

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Hate the scheduling of this game

re. the academic schedule. I realize that the game has been placed at this week due to TV considerations and the attendant national attention (whether this is a good thing considering this year’s team…), but the effect on our students is just horrible.

Honestly, if i were a Dyskstra/Sproul… RA, I would likely advise my residents to stay home tomorrow; taking a day off during the weekend before finals may be doable for many Bruins, but particularly for those just starting out at UCLA, it is a risky thing to take that day off, even for something as big as one’s first SC game.

academic schedule

It’s the academic schedule that felt wrong for me. Thanksgiving was usually two weeks before finals. This year, Thanksgiving led right into tenth week. Threw off my whole rhythm, it did.

by rick.2012 on Dec 6, 2008 10:31 AM PST up reply actions

hoo

We had no problem carving out 4-6 hours on a Sunday before the start of the Finals week to watch UCLA-Missouri in 95 (I had two finals that following Monday).

Life works out. Kids learn to adjust at UCLA. If someone is a die hard UCLA fan he or she is going to have a hard time concentrating during the game anyway. It’s also an opportunity to learn how to do time-management.

As I said below, I understand if a kid has a final today or tomorrow. But no excuses otherwise.

by Nestor on Dec 6, 2008 10:34 AM PST up reply actions

I have to agree

I’m unable to go thanks to a rough finals week coming up, but I’m not even going to try giving away my ticket; no one wants it. My friends have all had the same experiences. It’s too bad that my last $C game as a student has to fall right before finals.

by truebruin on Dec 6, 2008 1:21 AM PST reply actions

That's understandable

I’m a third year and I actually have my first final in an hour, and I can see how it effects everyone’s ability to go to the game.

Well, at least I’ve got that 2006 game at the Rose Bowl.

Bay Area Warriors fan currently at UCLA.

by Yoyo on Dec 6, 2008 8:06 AM PST up reply actions

If UCLA had 9 wins and playing for a Rose Bowl

Somehow I think lot of these students would have found a way to do some time-management and make it to the game. I don’t feel sorry for them.

by Nestor on Dec 6, 2008 9:17 AM PST reply actions

I agree N

I hear a lot of whine.

Pretty embarassing to hear from Bruins.

Who wants to bet all of these kids will magically find the time to watch our top-10 ranked Ben Ball Warriors in Pauley during Winter Quarter finals?

Getting on and off the bandwagon when it suits you based on our win-loss record is something only trOJans do.

by Bellerophon on Dec 6, 2008 10:23 AM PST up reply actions

I would be understanding

If kids had finals today or tomorrow. That’s legit.

But no excuses otherwise.

by Nestor on Dec 6, 2008 10:28 AM PST up reply actions

Obviously

If you have a final at the same time as the U$C game, I can understand. You can’t physically be in two places at once.

Otherwise, it’s time they learn time-management. Get your stuff together so that you can go to the game and be ready for your final. These kids are Bruins. Naturally, they have high aspirations, or else they would never have made it through Admissions.

If they want to make it, they got to start learning to manage time to get things done.

But more importantly, their time as Bruins, as we know as alums, is about more than just academics. That’s the great gift of being a Bruin. You’re going to leave with a degree from a world-class institution. But you get more than that: you get to see a world-class athletics program that thrives at an elite academic institution. How rare is that?

Years afterward, no Bruin remembers the time they spent studying for their finals. Hell, I can’t even remember what classes I took most quarters (I do remember the Spring Quarter of my senior year, but only because I had fulfilled all of my grad. requirements and I decided to take two BS classes (read: Comm. classes) to hang out, get an easy A, and look at pretty sorority girls).

What do I remember? I remember being there when our young Bruins pulled off a miracle comeback against a highly-ranked Washington team in Pauley thanks to Lorenzo Mata-Real. I remember Maurice Jones-Drew’s miracle 60+ yard scampers to the end zone. I remember being down by 21 against Stanford at their house with only 8 minutes to go in the 4th quarter and Drew Olson and MJD leading us to an amazing come-from-behind victory. I remember watching that miracle against Gonzaga and Arron Afflalo picking Adam Morrison off the floor. I remember watching 13-9 happen with fellow Bruins while I was in law school.

I remember being surrounded by other Bruins, clad in True Blue, cheering and screaming our heads off. That camraderie with your fellow Bruins is something a lot of our fellow UC students don’t get. UCSD? UCI? UCR? UCSB? UCD? Nope. None of that.

You’re all going to do fine on your finals. You’re going to graduate with a degree worth your weight in gold.

But you only get so many chances to be a Bruin on campus, so enjoy it.

Get your ass to the Rose Bowl. Now.

Yep

If something special happens today … some of these kids will be regretting it for rest of their lives.

No North Campus major has any excuse

If you’re majoring in garbage like Political Science, History, Sociology, English, etc., there is NO reason not to be at this football game.

Yes, this is UCLA and academics come first. But, this is UCLA v. U$C. It’s THE GAME. It’s huge. Moreover, it’s CRN’s first as our HC, the first in the coming years of success, the first of what will be the rebuilding of our once-proud program.

So, North Campus majors, don’t give me any whine about finals. I was an NC major (History & Political Science). We both know NC finals are all BS. How many of you have been cutting class all quarter? How many of you have actually done all the reading?

Yeah, that’s what I thought. You can afford one day. It’s not going to make you or break you just prior to a final. Even if you have one on Monday, no excuse. At this point, you know it or you don’t. One day is not going to change your grade.

For you little undergrads, you all need to man up and get down to this game. You only get four of them as a student. When you’re an old son-of-a-bitch like me (read: 25) and have a real job and can’t make it to Los Angeles from Northern California, then you’ll wish you were a fresh-faced 18-year-old freshman who only had to worry about getting in enough study time for some BS final.

Go to the damn game. Years later, you’ll thank yourself for doing it, even if it means you get a B+ instead of an A- (and trust me, that slight grade difference is not going to make or break your future career).

So get out of your dorm room, head down to the Rose Bowl in your True Blue and get behind your Bruins, dammit.

South Campus majors, your excuses are valid. But, since your lives suck, being South Campus majors and all, you should take this opportunity to give yourself a well-deserved study break. Crazy bastards.

GO BRUINS!
BEAT U$C!

Can you please give a pep rally talk to the Bruins before the game today?

Hey my sister is in South Campus

graduates in June as probably the only female in Biochem.

But she’s in the parking lot, tailgating her behind off and texting me all the anti-SC t-shirts she sees.

GOOOO BRUINS.

(North Campus – Poli Sci, and um yeah… reading?) Hey Bellerophon, we’re twins, I’m back in NorCal and can’t be at the Rose Bowl today. :(

No insult intended

Just acknowledging you South Campus folks are much more busy (since you have real majors) than those of us from North Campus. ;)

You don’t go through 4 (plus) years of south campus without learning to take a jab at your course list :-)

Feeling like a heel

After reading your posts I feel worse than before.
My wife and I scheduled our wedding reception in Asia around this game (I was even following last week’s game online thanks to BN). We cut our trip short so that we could return just in time to be in attendance.

We underestimated the effects of jet lag and disruptions it caused to our systems, and we were blindsided last night at 5pm when our seat partners/tailgate companions/carpoolers told us that they sold their tickets.

I never said I had an “emergency”, just a situation. Together we decided to watch the game from our couch, with a convenient bathroom nearby. One of our first dates was to an Oregon game and going to the RB is always a special time for us. Even though my wife was a Bruin undergrad and a grad student this was to be her first $c game.

Now I am wishing that I had sucked it up, strapped on a Depends, and made the trek solo. I hope I miss out on something major, and will have to deal with being labeled a bandwagonner.

Nonetheless….GO BRUINS

Go

by sausmaf on Dec 6, 2008 12:01 PM PST reply actions

A bit harsh guys...

I’m pretty sure that most of the people commenting/posting in the fanposts section have valid excuses for not going to the game. Personally, I would’ve been there if I could have, and I know five of my best friends are in the same situation. It’s not about being bandwagon fans or “whining,” it’s not even about UCLA being 9-0 or 0-9. Thanksgiving led right into 10th week this year, and finals began today. This year, it’s all about luck. A number of my friends and I got unlucky, with finals and papers late last week and early next week (even some today).

In short, I don’t like seeing my fellow Bruins being criticized for putting academics first. We’re not here to see football, as fun as it is. We’re here to earn a degree. Give us the benefit of the doubt.

by truebruin on Dec 6, 2008 6:11 PM PST reply actions

Like I said

Having a final the day of the game is understandable.

But what I’m reading from you is more of the same: whine, whine, whine.

Man up, learn some time management skills, and realize there is much more to life than class. Losing an afternoon to see the game at the Rose Bowl is not going to make or break your grade. If you’re relying on those few hours, then you’re screwed, plain and simple.

Bad schedules happen. It happened before. It happened now. It’ll happen again. Plan around it. You all have known for some time now when your finals would be and when your papers would be due. Just because some of you waited around to the last minute to do it, that’s not a valid reason for throwing out the “I can’t make it to the game due to finals” whine.

Again, as I said above, I understand if you had a final during the game. Obviously, you can’t be at two places at once. That’s totally understandable.

I’m just tired of hearing undergrads whine to the effect of “oh woe is me, I can’t make it to the game due to finals” when the reason many are swamped with work is a lack of planning and procrastination.

In sum, save me the whine. Being a Bruin is about more than just academics. Maybe one day you’ll realize that.

by Bellerophon on Dec 6, 2008 10:46 PM PST up reply actions

So dramatic

The bottom line if a student didn’t have a final yesterday or today he(or she) should have made time to go to the game (especially if that person considers himself a diehard fan). Period.

Oh and I don’t really care much for threats of "Goodbye Crue World (GBCW)" posts. You don’t need to waste bandwith by writing a FanPost on it.

We are not here to build traffic so we can sell ad revenues and make a career out of it. We will call it as we see it. If you don’t like that go somewhere else.

We have seen enough GBCW posts over the years. It’s not something original.

by Nestor on Dec 7, 2008 8:25 AM PST up reply actions

i can see both sides but...

I’m a fourth year mechanical engineer, I have finals everyday next week except Friday. I made it to the game, had a really fun time, but now I’m feeling pretty stressed with how much I have to do.

I can see why people wouldn’t want to go, but I don’t agree with complaining about it. If you really are a fan, you can find a way to make it out there, a few hours out of the weekend won’t kill you, and it’s worth it. Still can’t really believe that I just attended my last game at the RB as a student though =(. Gonna miss all our seniors, thanks for everything, guys.

by shipphappens on Dec 6, 2008 7:36 PM PST reply actions

what i think

i feel like i am speaking on behalf of a good number of the student population in saying that not attending the game today doesn’t show a lack of bruin pride. The timing for this game was just unfortunate. We have all come to games mid quarter with midterms papers etc. but it makes it a little easier because midterms are all throughout the quarter, not just concentrated over a one week span. It just sucks that when you have them all in the same week like a finals week, going to a football game is not really top priority, regardless of who is playing. And its not just watching the football game, getting their early, watching the game, and sitting through hours of traffic to get back really does take up the majority of the day, and i could understand how the weekend before finals it may not seem that appealing.

The student section has sat through years of disappointing seasons, so to question our dedication to the team seems pretty unfair.

As im sure all of you realize, ucla is academically competitive to say the very least. That nifty top 25 academic ranking, #2 public school in the nation doesn’t come for nothing, you really need all the time you can get during crunch time, which is exactly what it is right now.

by uclabruin34 on Dec 7, 2008 2:12 AM PST reply actions

More whine

I’m not going to repeat what I just said above in response to another undergrad whine. Instead I’ll copy-paste the main point:

Man up, learn some time management skills, and realize there is much more to life than class. Losing an afternoon to see the game at the Rose Bowl is not going to make or break your grade. If you’re relying on those few hours, then you’re already screwed, plain and simple.

I’m just tired of hearing undergrads whine to the effect of "oh woe is me, I can’t make it to the game due to finals" when the reason many are swamped with work is a lack of planning and procrastination.

When I was an undergrad a few years ago, none of this whine would have been met with much sympathy. I knew plenty of people who had finals, papers, and for some, the LSAT, during football season.

Also, don’t tout the academic rigors of our university and use it as some trump card to explain away your lack of dedication and pride. Especially considering you’re not even using it properly.

It’s not “ucla” a**hole. It’s UCLA.

by Bellerophon on Dec 7, 2008 10:35 AM PST up reply actions

BTW the top-25 academic ranking

We are what number 24 or 25 now?

We were around number 17 when our freshmen class entered in early 90s. It didn’t hurt our academic rankings when we took massive time out from out from our studying schedules to watch our hoops team in march madness during finals week. It was an accepted part of life.

Like I said, I am not sympathetic to this excuse unless someone had finals today or yesterday.
