The Dirt - From the Den (For the Fans - From the Fanatics)

Went to the game tonight. Since there has been so much talk and discussion of fan behavior I decided to copy and paste what the Den handout had this week.

It is playfully funny and while it is biting with sarcasm, it is backed up by facts.

It is fairly hilarious and a good way to get the student section pumped up.

I am just going to type the "dirt" becuase the scouting report is like any typical preview for the game.

The Dirt

Hell-o ASU Devils! While they started red out in the Pac-10, these sneaky devils have since cooled off and have lost three in a row after beginning 14-2. With the recent three game skid, I am sure this isn't where the Devils wanted to be, but some players take this to a whole new level. In fact, James Harden desperately wanted to come to UCLA, but Ben Howland just didn't see potential and didn't recruit him. How badly did he want to come here? He listed L.A. as the place he most wants to live, and this road trip as the one he most looked forward to. He must be excited to lose in a real city for once.

Harden is joined by former McDonald's All-American Eric Boatang. He was spurned by Duke and thought we would transfer to a 'mighty' Pac-10 powerhouse in ASU, where he currently is riding the pine averaging 12 minutes a game. He has started a grand total of one game this year, and apparently has a snowball's chance in hell of getting more playing time. In fact, one reason ASU has been so devilishly good is the fact that they are sitting their players from last year. That is right, if one team doesn't work, move them to the bench. Antwi Atuahene averaged 26 minutes per game last year, but this year has since dropped to 9. Hus buddy Christian Polk went from 30 minutes down to 14, dropping faster than Enron stock. However, it might have had something to do with Polk's 36% field goal percentage.

So what has Antwi been doing with all this time on the bench? Probably 'Moons over my Hammy.' Atuahene isn't open to catch passes anymore, so instead he heads to his favorite restaurant: Denny's, which is always open, like Kevin Love against a Div. II team.

You know what else is open 24 hours a day? Jail. While ASU might not have the hordes of criminals like a certain cross-town 'team,' they compensate with a little factor we like to call MCI, or Multiple Crime Index. Ex-Sun Devil Bryson Krueger has been firing up the criminal car on all cylinders, as last he was arrested for threatening to kill a man. But wait, there's more! On top of this, he was in possession of ectasy, Zanex, cocaine, and un registered hand gun! Shoot! He's a family man as well, as he was previously arrested for assault against his younger brother. Sounds like some tough love to me.

Are we really going to let these gun totin', bench-sitting, college spurned Devil's come into Pauley Pavilion? I think not! So show them what Pauley is really like, be loud, wear blue, and sent Atuahene down Westwood to Denny's before he make it to the court!

CHEER LIKE CHAMPIONS! Beat the Sun Devils!

Hmm
Usually I LOVE the dirt for the Den.  There are some truly hilarious capers that other teams get involved in.  (and I know the guy who writes them)

Unfortunately I think parts of this particular one were pretty bad.  It actually made me like Harden more and feel bad for him (and I feel like he would have been a better addition than Chace.)  And whats wrong with liking Denny's?
But the other stuff is great.

Sympathy for the (Sun)Devil
(See, I know more than opera)

Any sympathy I might have had for Harden was lost after the film of his pre-game preparation.  Look at Grok's very first highlight in the game thread.

The guy in the highlight is not showing the work ethic of a guy who wants to play for Coach Howland.  Maybe for his predecessor, but not for Coach Howland.

disagree.
College kids should have fun once in a while.  I have no problem with this, arguably staying loose before a game is a good thing.

Ben Howland has our team shoot 3-quarter shots from at the end of each practice for ths same reason.

I'd take Harden, and congratulate him on having a Freshman-of-the-Year kind of effort on a middle-of-the-road kind of team.

Too early to tell on Chace
Many of Howland's recruits outside of Moute (by necessity) and Love have had a tough time in their first year and need at least a full season in his system to blossom. Harden is a good player this year, but I wouldn't say that he's destined to have a better collegiate career that Chace just yet. With another year of maturity and some PT, Chace should show us a lot more of what he's capable of.

Harden's pregame routine
Here it is so people don't have to go searching around:

ROFL
Can you imagine someone trying to pull that of with Coach Howland?

Does Harden think that he's on the Globetrotters?

I think players listen to music
before games all the time.  I used to in fact.  Though it is funny to see it on the Court, no one knows when the footage was taken.  I bet it was taken 30-40 mintues before the game when the players come out and shoot-around and get loose--and when generally the arena is close to empty.  What if it was 2 or 3 hours before the game?  Regardless, I don't think it reflects on whether he's a Howland kind of kid.  At least that is my opinion.

In all fairness,
He is the youngest player in the Pac-10.  He's just a kid, I'm sure Howland would have been able to mold him even if he didn't have a great work ethic.

agreed...
kinda bogus reason to rip on the kid. no work ethic because he has headphones on? sounds like someone busted out their own "jump to your own conclsions mat" during the game

The generation gap is showing
Something tells me that rfirpo, JoshuCLa and rb bruin are a little closer to my son's age than my age.  And when you guys achieve geezer status, you'll look at the younger guys and say some of the same stuff I'm saying.

I believe this cycle has been going on since Ben Franklin rolled his eyes at that punk kid Tommy Jefferson.

That's one of the the things that makes UCLA and the BN great.  Different perspectives and different ages and different backgrounds all chiming in with different opinions.  (Of course, when those opinions differ from mine, they're wrong, but I digress.)  We have one thing in common for sure, and that is the Bruin Blue blood coursing through our veins, and that's good enough for me.
