A call to action for the assault on AA2

I have collected a list of contacts to send complaints to in regards to the assault on AA2. Included in the list are relevant Pac-10 officials and the President, AD and coaching staff of the UW.

And just so we know what values Morris was not living up to with his assault on AA2 and what standards of conduct McCable is not enforcing, I have included the Pac-10 Conference's Mission Statement (copied straight from their very own website).

If you have any more names of who else we can pressure on this travesty, please add them to this diary.

Thank you for taking the time to write.

Tim did not intend to hit Aboya in the face and, in fact, did immediately
apologize.

I think what Tim Morris did to Alfred Aboya was disgusting. I am
further appalled that no one from your team or university has
publicly apologized about what can only be described as an assault. If he did that on the streets, he could have been arrested. The incident and your handling of it is reprehensible.

Who gives a crap if he apologized
He did something wrong (and, as UCngLA put it, commited assault if he had done that at a pickup game). Thanks for all the e-mails. I would also recommend an e-mail to PTI as they have been doing justice to this story so far and are giving national media exposure to the story which can only help to ratchet up the heat on the Pac-10: pti@espn.com

What?
Does this guy really think that anyone who saw the play thinks it was anything but intentional?  How stupid or how naive does he think we are?

Morris intended to bounce the ball off the defender to beat the five-second count.  Everyone who has ever played has done that at one time or another.  The target is ALWAYS the legs.  It is never the stomach.  It is never the crotch.  And until Sunday, it had never been the face.

What is the Washington AD going to say next?  That Watergate is just a second rate burglary?  All they have to do is tell the truth - that the kid made a mistake by making a dirty play, that he was ashamed and apologized, and that he was going to be appropriately punished - and the incident would come to an end.  But instead fans everywhere, not just Bruin fans, have their intelligence insulted with this sort of absurdity.

Hey, UW Atletic Director - NOBODY BELIEVES YOUR STUPID "HE DIDN'T DO IT INTENTIONALLY" STORY.  Try a new one.  This one makes you look worse than before you gave it.

by Fox 71 on Feb 12, 2008 10:29 AM PST up reply actions

It's a unsportsmanlike and STUPID play
There's a reason you throw it off the legs - it goes directly out of bounds to the floor afterwards. Morris barely got out of the way, but if it had touched him on the way back out off of another man's face, it's our ball and he turns it over.

The UW administration has, time and time again, proven to be completely incompetent, and this much is evident from this episode, their mishandling of Ty and of course, NEUHEISAL, and the lump sum of money they had to pay to CRN for their bumbling stumbling ways.

Apparently
the Pac-10 believes the story. And believes it's Aboya's fault. Awful.

by Raisin on Feb 12, 2008 10:34 AM PST up reply actions

Not intentional?
Even Romar admitted it was intentional when he said, "It was in the heat of the moment and Tim made a quick decision and it happened."

UW's AD is either a liar or he lacks the guts of an ostrich.  Seems like he's positioning perfectly to take over the Pac-10 Commissioner gig someday.

Aw, the guy's a slimebag..
..just like his putrid, pathetic athletic program, his sleaze players, and their coaches. They should all contract a raging case of leprosy, have their sexual organs rot off, die a horrible death, turn into a pile of festering puss, and rot in hell for eternity.
God, it's great to be a Bruin!

Tim Morris is lucky
That he did it to someone as tough as Aboya.

Can you iamgine if Aboya had thrown the same pass at say, Appleby?  I would guess "Apples" would be in a hospital somewhere right now.

Additional Ammo
From the 2007 NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Rules and Interpretations Guide

Rule 4, Section 26, Article 4

"Flagrant personal foul, live ball. A flagrant personal foul shall be a personal foul that involves severe or excessive contact with an opponent or involves contact that is extreme in nature while the ball is live."

Rule 4, Section 69, Article 1

"Unsportsmanlike conduct is behavior or an act that is unbecoming to a fair, ethical and honorable individual."

While Morris's actions were definitely unbecoming to an honorable individual, I think that the first rule here would be the one that I would have nailed him with. It would appear that Sunday's refs skimmed through Rule 4 but hey who can blame them, it is the biggest section of the book. Having reffed hundreds of basketball games(if you played intramural ball between '96 and '00, I probably reffed your game at least once) I know that you can always find a way to penalize or reward a player, coach or team appropriately. The fact that Morris went unpunished for that BS move is ridiculous.

by Pyrrhus on Feb 12, 2008 10:41 AM PST reply actions

The dishonesty is appalling
It is amazing to me that anyone can suggest with a straight face that the play wasn't intentional.  The Pac 10 and the UW should absolutely be ashamed of themselves for not fessing up that it was an intentional play.  If you want to argue that it is within the rules, that's one thing (although I can't believe a play like that is within the rules of even dodgeball!).  But to say that the play wasn't intentional or to say that Aboya jumped in front of the ball and it is therefore his fault is an absolute insult to the intelligence of anyone who saw the play.  Either these people are blind, stupid or extremely dishonest.

This is all
Rick Neuheisel's fault. Clearly, he has dragged that program into the dirt.

I just called the PAC-10 office
Tom Hansen's Phone number and the lady that answered the phone very politely took all the information down, but she did not even know about this incident! Apparently this attach is not getting any attention  whatsoever.
Every one of you in the nation needs to pick up the phone and call Tom Hansen's phone number above to state your complaint. Be polite but you must make your voice known.  You don't even have to be a UCLA fan, if you love the game of basketball, voice your concern.

My email to Tom Hansen
Hello,

This issue was previously viewed as unintentional by Bill McCabe, who said "[...] [Aboya] jumps to the right and the ball hits him in the face."

However, from the following picture (http://pixel.princeton.edu/~mburns/images/aboya.jpg) it is obvious that the throwing motion begins and ends when both of Aboya's feet are on the ground. Aboya's movement to the right is not significant, and the  UW player's movement (gritted teeth, avoiding rebound) clearly shows that it is intentional.

I understand that during a live game, in real time, it is difficult for the officials to conclude that the play warrants a technical.  This is not my complaint.  My complaint is the lack of an OFFICIAL apology by the UW program.  Instead, their coach Romar disingenuously feigns "suprise" at the attention given to this dirty play as is evident from this Seattle Times article. (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/huskies/2004178583_webromar12.html)

Obviously I am biased (see UCLA email address), but I don't think either the player and/or the coach and/or McCabe have been completely honest in their assessments of the situation.  Furthermore, I feel that this sets a dangerous precedent for the level of dirty play in the PAC-10.  Although I trust the maturity of our team, you can imagine how painful it would be for one of Kevin Love's full court passes to be stopped 94 feet short by a UW player's face.  We should  not wait until a player is injured to address this situation.

I look forward to hearing a response,

Thanks,

UW Director of Basketball Ops is a 4th grader
Just received this response to my email wondering why no public apology was made and no action taken by the Pac-10 (which included the photo sequence and the Pac-10 mission):

Tim has apologized to Alfred once right after the incident, and again when the teams shook hand after the game. I hope that you wrote the same letter to Oregon after Aaron Brooks punched Ryan Appleby in the face in the 06 Pac-10 Tournament. Aaron has apologized to Ryan, and Tim has apologized to Alfred, and everyone has moved on.............

Lance LaVetter
University of Washington

Couple problems Lance; Brooks was suspended for two games and wrote letters of apology to Appleby and Romar.  Maybe Lance should talk down to Romar and remind him about the Brooks/Appleby incident.

The fallacy of LaVetter
You can't justify bad behavior by pointing to other bad behavior.  What's wrong is wrong, and if it is within your power to correct and/or mitigate it, that is what you need to do.

Are you surprised?
The UW administration is showing its character, or lack thereof once again. Except this time, they don't have Rick Neuheisel to put the blame on. It is a pervasive problem over there.
