NFL Experience in the Pac-10

Bumped. GO BRUINS. -N

In light of Coach Neuheisel rounding out his staff with the hiring of 13-year NFL veteran Tim Hauck as secondary coach, I compiled a list of total overall NFL experience among the coaching staffs of the Pac-10. Here is that list, cross posted from my comment on the diary noting the hiring:

  1. UCLA: 70 years total (24 years playing, 46 years coaching)
  2. Stanford: 58 years (24 playing, 34 coaching)
  3. USC: 50 total (21 playing, 29 coaching)
  4. Washington: 38 total (8 playing, 30 coaching)
  5. Arizona State: 32 total (3 playing, 29 coaching)
  6. Cal: 13 total (7 playing, 6 coaching)
  7. Oregon State: 13 total (1 playing, 12 coaching)
  8. Washington State: 13 total (13 playing, 0 coaching)
  9. Oregon: 6 total (0 playing, 6 coaching)
  10. Arizona: 4 total (3 playing, 1 coaching)
A few Interesting Facts:
-Wayne Moses trained as an FBI agent.
-Reggie Moore worked as a paramedic and fire fighter for 8 years.
-Over half of USC's years come from Pete Carroll and Ken Norton.
-Oregon State features a Graduate Assistant with 29 years experience in High School sports.
-Much of Arizona State's experience comes from the coaches who have traveled with Dennis Erickson around football.
-Oregon State probably had the most experience in the other forms of professional football (excluding the USC form, that is).

A little of my methodology:
-Taken from official bios on school web sites, and, at times, wikipedia.
-Totals do not include the many (many, many) years spent playing/coaching in Canada, USFL, Europe, or Arena Football.
-Totals also do not include time spent in NFL intern programs.
-I was sporadic in some of my counting of playing years, and team sites weren't always clear about whether or not a coach had actually been on a roster during the season.
-Totals do include Graduate Assistants.

Agreed
This is a neat post that will be enjoyed by many, but commented on by few.

Just another reminder that the number of comments on a diary isn't correlated with the quality of the post!

Great Post Jaffa
Research like this makes BN so much more than a page of 'wrap.

I'm always amazed with the way many here research and analyze things to present fresh perspectives.

Way cool, Jaffa

Good job Jaffa!
I know this came at a great amount of research, time you could have used to be with your friends and family or otherwise just enjoying yourself.

Thanks for the work, time and effort.

Great post--
But Arizona has a Stoops! (sarcasm is so difficult on the internet)

Actually, they've got two
And I think 1 of Arizona's playing years comes from them (Mike?).

A post
Our staff can certainly use on the recruiting trail. Great work!

One wonders how you have the time
to do all this research on minutiae.  Do you really think that years equates to excellence, or isn't it true that once one gets a certain amount of experience, say 7 years, the performance would be equal to one who has 20 years?

As you said,
The absolute number may be a bit misleading. However, this does (indirectly) show that just about all of the coaches on staff have at least a few years (the raw number may not, but from what I saw, they pretty much all had at least a couple years). I would guess that's somewhere around where the cutoff lies, that there's not much difference after 3 or 4 in terms of experience, and knowing how things work. But the fact that some of these guys have held on to jobs in the league for ages and ages show that they're good at something - that's probably the main difference between 3-4-7 years and 10-15-20.
