UCLA Softball Dominates

EDIT: First-time poster... just wanted to shed some light on another great UCLA Athletic team.

While our men's baseball and basketball did some great work this weekend here at home, women's softball took care of business at the Palm Springs Classic.

The tournament featured over half of the top 25 teams in the country, including last year's national champion Arizona.  UCLA, however, was the only team to leave Palm Springs with a perfect 5-0 record with wins over Massachusetts, #18 Georgia, #14 Hawaii, #10 Baylor, and #2 Northwestern.

Freshman infielder GiOnna DiSalvatore, freshman pitcher Donna Kerr, and senior pitcher Anjelica Selden highlighted the weekend for the Bruins.  DiSalvatore hit .667, which included a game-winning triple with bases loaded against Georgia.  Kerr allowed only one run and struck out 15 in two games, while Selden looked true to form with a 17 strikeout performance against #2 Northwestern and 38 total strikeouts through the weekend.

From ESPN.com:

"Anjelica Selden is keeping Kerr at bay with a 1.21 ERA and 78 strikeouts against just four walks in 52 innings. A two-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio is good. A three-to-one ratio is stellar. Selden's nearly 20-to-1 ratio is off the charts -- even by the standards she set for herself as a freshman and sophomore.

Selden shut down Georgia in her first start at Palm Springs after two tough-luck runs in the first inning, retiring the last 13 batters she faced and striking out a total of 13. And in Sunday's marquee showdown against Northwestern, she struck out 17 and allowed no earned runs in a 6-2 win. All in all, she looked little like the pitcher who went 17-11 with a 2.82 ERA as a junior."

Here's the rest of the article:

After last year's disappointing exit in the first round of playoffs, it looks like UCLA Softball is set to regain its dominance.

The Bruins have a home game Wednesday the 27th against Cal State Bakersfield.  Game starts at 2:30PM.
