Sample bracket, this one from Rivals.com

http://collegebasketball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=773443

Has us as a #1 seed.

Interesting notes:
1-6 Pac 10 teams in, but not the "standard."  I think if Arizona wins one pac 10 tourney game, they're in.  Ironic that they need the tourney now since Lute was so adamant against the Pac 10 tourney when it was reinstated.

2-They are projecting Morgan State to receive their first ever bid.  Why should we care?  They are coached by Todd Bozeman.  What do you want to bet we see them in round one?

3-The 2 seeds are Kansas, Duke, Texas and Georgetown.  Let's assume we stay out west. I think Georgetown stays in the east.  And they will move Duke from NC's bracket (another of their #1s). My guess, Duke will be the #2 in our bracket.

4-They are projecting UCSB in the field as well.  Again, watch for the NCAA to get cute and try to pair them close to us.  Granted, they will be the lower seed, but watch for them if they win to be on the same path as us.

5-They have the 5 seeds as Indiana, Michigan State, Washington State and Butler.  Seems to me that is a pretty damn good group of 5 seeds.

6-They have the Pac 10 with 6 bids, tied with the Big 12.  They also have the Big East with 8 bids. Are they really deserving of that many?

Remember
The Big East has approximately 345 million teams. Syracuse is a bubble, the rest should be in.

I'd be surprised if Arizona is out.

Update II
BAck down to 335 million, as 10 million just joined the ACC.

Not to fret, CUSA will be sending over a fresh batch in the morning.

U of A got damn lucky
With the OSU draw in the 1st round. Too bad for ASU, who has a better conference record and a sweep of their rivals.

I hope Bruin fans cheer for ASU like crazy on Thursday.

Thats a mock bracket
UofA may not make the tourney if they get bounced in the first round at Staples.

U of A didn't get a better draw than ASU
They have a play-in game against OSU while ASU gets a bye.  They have to turn around and play Stanford while ASU gets SUC.
GO BRUINS!

True, but......
UofA wins (very likely) and they're in the dance. ASU loses (50/50) and they're out of the dance. If ASU got OSU again, they (very likely) would win and be in if UofA played $C and lost.

I didn't mean as far as the PAC-10 tourney, I meant UofA got lucky as far as the big dance.

by Bruin in Denver on Mar 12, 2008 7:45 AM PDT up reply actions

A win by UofA
puts them in the dance because they actually played someone in the non-conference. ASU got the better Pac 10 draw, but UofA enters in a better position.

ASU played one good team in non-conference, Xavier. After Xavier, the next best team they played was Illinois, followed by LSU and Nebraska. That gives them a non-conference SOS that is 277 out of 341.

Arizona played Memphis, Kansas, Texas A&M, Houston and UNLV. That's the 3rd best non-conference SOS and best among BCS conference schools.

The committee tells the teams every year to go out and play good teams and they won't reward teams for sitting home and piling up wins against nobodys. This is just another example of it and I guarantee you that next year ASU's SOS will be far, far better.

Play-in Games Shouldn't Count
for NCAA Tournament considerations.

If Arizona beats OSU in the play-in game, then turns around and loses to Stanford, I don't think that should improve their NCAA tourney standing above ASU even if ASU loses to 'SC.

That's what I meant all along.....
by saying that UofA got lucky with the draw. ASU beats OSU and gets in with a loss at Stanford. ASU loses to $C today and they're likely out. That kinda $UCs

Why does Bozeman matter?
Isn't he the Cal coach who got banned? Is there some history (besides that) between him and UCLA/Howland of relevance?

I ask out of youthful ignorance.

by kidro2001 on Mar 11, 2008 11:42 PM PDT reply actions

You are correct
No real history with Howland, but since he used to coach for a Pac 10 school and his current team looks to draw a 16 seed, I thought they might pair them against a Pac 10 school in the 1st round.  Since we are the only Pac 10 school with a #1 seed (in the mock bracket) it would not suprise me to see the match-up.
