Center Court: Ben Ball (California) Open Thread

Here we go. We have heard a lot of talk about how our team 28-3 (16-2 in Pac-10) which won its conference regular season championship by 3 games have gotten lucky this year (never mind all the no calls and bad calls that went against us the whole season). So imagine everyone has been waiting for this the whole week:

Again despite the off court shenanigans and whining we have heard from around the country the whole week our team’s objective is simple. Bruins need to win one game to lock up the number 1 seed out West.

The tip off is set for 2:30 pm PST (FSN). If you are not getting the game on television you can follow it via links provided at the official site.

As always, if you are watching, listening, following, or tracking the game online, post your comments here.

This is our Ben Ball Warrior open thread.

Fire Away.

GO BRUINS.

Wow.
I don't think there's ever been a 1st round Pac-10 tourney game this meaningful for UCLA.  Winning this game (handily, if possible) would shut up those who think we got lucky against Cal last time and probably secure the #1 bid.  I'm extremely disappointed I'm not going to get the game on TV, but I'll be following via the interwebs.

I, like many others, will be slaving away at the office.  For those of you watching, keep us posted.  Especially when JS hits teardrops from the baseline!  Go Bruins.

Same here
2:30?!  Shouldn't higher seeds ... play later in the day?!?!

I don't know if they  hooked up the cable in the conference room yet, but I doubt that's an approved use of the room.

Early game benefits us
Since Cal's game ended at around 8:30 last night.

Also, I know they're "kids" and all, but Cal's starters played a ton of minutes last night, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if they come out flat.

by bruinhopeful on Mar 13, 2008 9:44 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually
I think they'll come out and play well, having just played on that floor, and considering our tendency to start slowly. However, the fatigue should get to them towards the end of the first half. I don't really see us blowing them out, I think our team will be a bit nervous at first while they will be jazzed up. I hope I'm wrong and that we blow them out from the start.

It is based on scheduling for Friday's games,
in part. The idea, as I see it, is that the winners from the first Thursday session play in the first Friday night game, while the night session winners play the late Friday game. Either the #1 or #2 seed has to play in the Thursday afternoon session, and since the winner of the first semifinal on Friday gets an extra 2-3 hours rest before the final on Saturday afternoon, it seems fair that the #1 seed (or whoever may knock it off) gets the opportunity.

Be careful what you wish for
The talk apres Husky game last night from some of Da Bearz players and the droning MSM was that most teams wait weeks, months, and even years for payback but Cal was going to get theirs re-e-e-e-a-l soon.

Funny thing about payback is that you gotta cash the checks your mouth wrote.

I didn't hear a lot of trash talk by UCLA after Shipp's "H-O-R-S-E shot" edged Cal out their rightful place in the sun. But sure heard Da Bearz coach running his mouth about how he wuz robbed.

If I am a Bruin, I'm thinking that the post season starts now and what finer way to announce our arrival than by taking advantage of this "re-do" opportunity. In a way, soundly defeating Cal also takes some of the edge off of the questions about the Stanford game too..

..but then, we might them again as well.

(Just sorry we could not have gotten the dogs; would so-o-o-o love to have kicked their ass out of the tournament bcause of the desultory game we played against them at Hec and, of course, the inbound pass.)

God, it's great to be a Bruin!

Bears Talking Trash
Bears before last night's game:
"If we can envision UCLA jerseys on the Washington players, I'm sure we will go all out," Boykin said. "I want them bad. It's not looking past Washington, but to be so close to beating that team, we want it back. We want another opportunity."
And the Bears kept talking trash after last night's 3 pt win over the Huskies who were without Brockman:
"We know we can go out and compete with those guys," Cal sophomore point guard Jerome Randle said. "It's a blessing to play those guys again. We were shooting for UCLA. A lot of people were putting us down and saying we can't win this tournament. But we have faith that we can do it."
I never cared about the Pac-10 tournament. But this is a game I want to win badly. I hope we pound those losers from Berkeley tonight.

Go Bruins!!

by bluestreet on Mar 13, 2008 7:55 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Hm....
I don't see a lot of trash talking in your block quotes.  I see a team itching to play us, and these days, who DOESN'T want to knock us off, regardless of motivation.

Like I said, not a hint of disrespect there.  The call WAS controversial, and they're obviously upset.  Nothin' wrong with that.

by MrGray on Mar 13, 2008 8:38 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess we disagree
I like how our players say nothing but nice things about other team before game. The only exception this year was Shipp when before the SuC game he said UCLA was more into playing a team game. That remark ended up firing SuC. But in the rematch Jefferson ran smack.

I don't know when I read those quotes I get the impression that those guys think they are better than us. And I do see that as smack coming from a 9th place garbage program headed towards the NIT.

We will have to agree to disagree.

by bluestreet on Mar 13, 2008 8:42 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed
While it seems that Boykin and Randle were running their mouths a bit, I don't consider it quite at the level of trashing.

I don't doubt that their statements are based upon a feeling either of being screwed or not being able to hold a lead last week, but if they wanted to make that an issue, they easily could have (and the media sure would have liked that).

by bruinhoo on Mar 13, 2008 9:40 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, but
where have these guys been all season? All of a sudden, after 30 games, now they "turn it on"? They act like they're on this big winning streak at the end of a great season. I'm all for being confident but a little humility is in order. They are 6-12 since their first meeting against UCLA, hardly cause for acting like they're a good team.

by tasser10 on Mar 13, 2008 9:53 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Anderson in post game interview last night
said something like "cant wait to beat UCLA, I guess we owe it to them".  I am pretty sure that is what he said, but I could be off a word or two.  Of course he was led into the statement by the interviewer on FSN.

by popopapa on Mar 13, 2008 10:24 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I saw it too
But I'm not sure if he said "beat".

by bruinbabe2000 on Mar 13, 2008 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He said...
"We know we can come out and beat them," Anderson said. "We know now we can compete."

He did also say "We owe it to them," but I can't find that one anywhere.

This isn't trash talk, but it will be satisfying to shut them up, anyway.

i usually pull for the bears
When they aren't playing ucla. Sort of like you pull for an older brother who's hit some bumps on the road of life to pull it together and have some success. But their whining and crying and refusal to take personal responsibility for losing Saturday has removed any respect I used to have for them.

I want ucla to punk them. Make it a smack down. 20+ margin of victory. Empty the bench. Put those whining losers in their pathetic place. Go Bruins!

Bruins Make Their Own Luck
I wouldn't say the Bruins got lucky all year; only against Stanford. The Bruins created their luck against just about every opponent by outworking them and out-hustling them. Good teams get breaks and favorable calls because they're good.
Besides, I wouldn't have been surpised if the Bruins had inbounded the ball after the block against the Cardinal and won at the buzzer anyway.

From WWL, Kevin Love made first team All-American. Collison received votes as well, but didn't make it.

Another AA-team for Love
Always good to see, as well as Collison high on the list. And - Gasp! - someone at the WWL must not have gotten the memo. From DC's profile on the all-american page:
"When games mattered later in the season, Collison made plays. You can question the call against Stanford, but Collison still made it down court in a few ticks and forced a foul to be called. He then made the free throws to force the overtime and an eventual win and Pac-10 title."

I am probably being nit picky but...
the article on ESPN about the All-American Team features 3 of the 5 players on the front page: Augustin, Hansborough, Beasely.  Did these players get more votes than the other two: love and douglas-roberts, or is this another example of anti-ucla sentiment at ESPN?  Both Memphis and UCLA are ranked above Texas and Kansas State...

No whining
In 1995, a guy named Ed O'Bannon had a pretty good year, and took his team to the finals.  I had to depose a treating doctor, who insisted that it be after his regular hours, so being a good guy I agreed.  The lawyer for the plaintiff wouldn't let me ask questions, and disrupted the depo so bad that I had my briefcase packed and was walking out the door before the doctor's lawyer convinced him to shut up and convinced me he would in fact shut up.

But my one hour depo turned into a four hour depo, and I only got to see the last minute of the championship game.  So no whining.

CSTV or Yahoo sports
CSTV is the most detailed, but the updates lag a bit. Yahoo sports updates the fastest, but is not quite as detailed as CSTV (has a basic play-by-play + points, fouls and shooting pct, but not assists, rebounds, TO's that CSTV shows). ESPN is not as fast as Yahoo, and can be unreliable at times.

Officiating again played a crucial role in a game between USC and Arizona State.

This time, the Trojans liked the way it turned out.

Officials took away a basket by Sun Devils forward Jeff Pendergraph in the final minute that would have tied the score. Instead, an offensive foul was called and fourth-seeded USC held on for a 59-55 victory over fifth-seeded Arizona State this afternoon in a Pacific 10 Conference tournament quarterfinal at Staples Center.

The waved-off basket would have tie the score with 16.9 seconds left after freshman guard James Harden missed a layup and Pendergraph corralled the ball coming off the rim for a dunk.

Instead, USC freshman Davon Jefferson was sent to the free throw line and made both shots to give the Trojans their final four-point advantage while Arizona State fans vociferously booed.

Hey guys, I didn't know where to ask this as I am new to this site. I am a huge fan of Coach Wooden and had the opportunity to meet him quite a few times. I am trying to find information that shows what Coach and UCLA did before Sam Gilbert came into the picture in any way shape or form that can be used against Wooden by others. I have heard by some that Sam came into the picture in '67 and others before that. Do any of you have information that can answer my question or point me in the right direction? Thank you very much!

Cal has gone on a little bit of a run. UCLA's stagnant offense has hurt them defensively since Cal is getting into their offense early after the Bruins' misses and turnovers. Collison should get a little more aggressive looking for his shot with Love out.

Nice half by all the announcers.  And incidentally, the players were pretty good, too.

I notice on Yahoo that Love is only 1-5.  Anything happening there that is of concern?  And Mata-Real with 8 points!!

Love with only 2 points in the half
Mata and Collison lead all scorers with 8 points each. Luc, Shipp and Westy have 7 each.

Love has 2 fouls, no one else for UCLA has more than 1. Anderson and Harden have 2 each for Cal.

by bruinhoo on Mar 13, 2008 3:29 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Team fouls: UCLA 7, Cal 8
No one with more than 2 for either team (Love; Anderson, Harden).

by bruinhoo on Mar 13, 2008 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

In other words...
... Cal's top 2 bigmen and our starting C have 2 fouls.

With LMR giving us this kind of reserve play, though, we're doing just fine.

If we can pull off a 15+ point win with KLove and at least 2 other starters playing less than 30 minutes, we're going to be in great shape for tomorrow.

39-25 UCLA.

LMR has 8 points, 3 blocks.
KL has been on the bench with 2 fouls, LMR and AA2 are tenacious, creating all kinds of opportunities.

DC will not be denied.

Cal's Anderson is playing with 2 fouls.

Love
He's working today, but not getting those calls that he's used to getting. At least 2 pushing fouls were not called on a couple shots. He also missed an easy lay-up. So that's 3 of his misses. His second foul was kinda bogus.

Cal is doing a good job playing very physical with Love, even getting away with a little bit. Kevin has to make the adjustment and not get frustrated. He's done a good job defensively in this game compared to the layup drill in the last game. Credit Ben Howland for making the defensive adjustments, Ryan with very few shots so far.

Yahoo originally had Collison with 8
now with 11.

He must have hit a shot in the locker room.

And a question about locker rooms.  How do things work with 8 teams and 2 locker rooms?  4 of the teams might not be involved, but at a certain point, there will be a time when at least four teams will need locker rooms.

After so much running of their mouths
it looks like Cal is just all mouth.  They really haven't made much of a game of it.  We've outscored them 50-25 since they were last close.

Cal's mouth wrote checks for a million bucks, but their sorry rear-ends only brought a roll of nickels to the bank.  They are overdrawn to the nth degree.  These guys will not be playing any more bball after this game.

hmmm
"If we can envision UCLA jerseys on the Washington players, I'm sure we will go all out," Boykin said. "I want them bad. It's not looking past Washington, but to be so close to beating that team, we want it back. We want another opportunity."

"We know we can go out and compete with those guys," Cal sophomore point guard Jerome Randle said. "It's a blessing to play those guys again. We were shooting for UCLA. A lot of people were putting us down and saying we can't win this tournament. But we have faith that we can do it."

SJH, remember Bryce Chambers?
He was a really good player, but suffered the fate of being on a team with really really REALLY great players.  This would be when he got in, and he was known as Coach Wooden's cigar.

Red Auerbach would be lighting his cigar, Bryce Chambers would be kneeling at the scorer's table, and Chick would be commenting on the jiggling of the jello.

They're not good enough.  there are a million teams in the east that will generate more interest than the NINTH PLACE finisher in the Pac 10.  I think they have a whole year to get themselves psyched up to play us again.

Josh?  3-5.

Kevin?  3-4.

Drago?  1-1.

Another couple of games like this, and I think we'll have our stroke back...
