Taylor King to Transfer

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke freshman forward Taylor King has decided to transfer.

King, a 6-foot-6 native of Huntington Beach, Calif., saw action in all 34 games in 2007-08, averaging 5.9 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. He had two 20-point games, including 27 points against Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 25, 2007.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski said Monday that King has "the ability to be a good player," adding that he supported King's decision to transfer.

Duke did not say where King would transfer.

Star-divide

Interesting, considering he was set to go to UCLA before changing his mind to join the darkside.  I remember him saying during the year in a LA Times article he had no regrets...guess not...

Just posted this a little earlier
"Mater Dei coach Mike Calloway spoke to King earlier today. "He hasn't decided where he's going, but I know he's not staying. He likes Coach K, but feels he'd fit in better at another school," Calloway said. "He mentioned UCLA, Southern Cal and North Carolina as possible schools he'd feel comfortable at."

Also looking at Gonzaga and Nova.

Calloway?
Who is Mike Calloway? I know the coach at Mater Dei is Gary McKnight. Anyway Taylor King doesn't play a lick of defense so I don't think he would fit in at UCLA. The minute I heard this I Immediately thought he's going to be a Trojan. I hope he goes somewhere else though because the guy can shoot the lights out.

One of his possible schools is UNC? Seriously?
Can't imagine too many players have transferred from Duke to UNC mid-career... love to see the reception he gets when he steps back on Duke's home floor in Carolina blue.

I can't see that happening
He's complaining about PT now, UNC has four 5* commits in 2009 already.

King has no brain !
First he said he's a Bruin.  Then he said too many players on the team played like him.  That he didn't like.  So, he went to Duke, thinking he could distinguish himself there.  But wait a minute, they got bounced so fast.  Are you kidding me or am I losing my mind ?  Let's see now, maybe I'll join UNC if they win.  Or perhaps I'll sweet talk my way back to Westwood.

California dreamin', on such a winter's day.........

Most big conferences make you sit 2 years
He would burn a red shirt & lose a year of eligibility if he transfered to Carolina.

That's a big price to pay especially if one of his concern was lack of playing time.

Meant to say
Big conferences make you sit two years if you transfer Football or Basketball within the conference.

Maybe USC
But I think Gonzaga or Nova is more likely.

Coach Howland helped him make his decision to switch over to Duke, he's not going to UCLA. No way I can see him going to UNC either.

Seriously!
I know Cedric Bozeman graduated from Mater Dei.  He was a solid player for us as a senior.  But besides Ced, has any Mater Dei basketball player panned out? This guy has not made any wise decisions thus, far.  Didn'the commit to UCLA when he was in the 3rd grade?? He'll wind up at the SUC (hopefully).

What's up with these Mater Dei
players. They are seemed to be raised to be future trOJans in so many ways.  And they have that pipeline thing going with the football coach, who must be making additional income to push his players that way.  It really seems so obvious. Overated, pampered, spoiled brats moving on to be bigger, overated, pampered, spoiled brats.

Do we even want him? I sure don't!
I realize that he is talented, but he doesn't seem to have a good attitude from the games that I've watched.  I get the feeling he is in the "me first" mind set and would not fit in with the Bruin family or with CBH. I see this guy as a "cancer" in the locker room if he's not getting playing time or enough shots.

I really think the reason he spurned us in favor of Puke in the first place is that he saw CBH runs a tight team oriented program and he risked not being the "featured guy."  He probably thought I'll go to Puke and be like J.J Reddick and be allowed to hoist a bunch of 3's like you would in a pick-up game.

I don't think we want this guy unless I'm wrong and he really is a team first guy.

I'd only think about
taking him back if I knew he played great defense...but for some reason I doubt that he does..
O.A.

Too bad Duke didn't work out for him
If Howland wants him and offers him a spot, I trust he will fit in well. Regardless of where he goes, I wish him luck.

I'd say he was a pretty good player from Mater Dei

Sounds a bit like a re-run of Tommy Lewis
King seems to be another Tommy Lewis. In the mid-'80s, Lewis was an all-everything Mater Dei guy, went to USC, transferred after his frosh season and ended up with Pepperdine where he had an okay career, alongside Doug Christie, and played in a couple of NIT games.
Easy money and faithless women, red-eye whiskey for the pain...

remember
Schea Cotton?  He was LeBron James before LeBron James.  He ended up at Mater Dei too before fading into oblivion without realizing his potential.  Mater Dei is a different kind of school.  Its athletic reputation across the board attracts a certain type of athlete who views the school as a launching pad for a college or pro career.

by ishXdavid on Apr 1, 2008 9:13 AM PDT reply actions

Lavin got Schea Cotton to commit
to UCLA, and was supposed to come in with Baron Davis. But I think he didn't have the grades to get in...

God was he good

by dijonplease on Apr 1, 2008 11:02 AM PDT reply actions

ish is on the right track
but I think that moreso than the kids looking for a launching pad to a college career it's the Mater Dei parents. Taylor king seems like a classic example of a kid whose dad plopped down thousands of dollars on skills camps, private instruction and private institutions to give his little superstar the leg up on the competition (note that once upon a time, Taylor King was the #1 in this vaunted class, over Mayo). These kinds of beauty pagent parents are the leading cause of burnout in promising young athletes.

he can't come back
not that i particularly want him, but we don't have any available scholarships. he might go like the last guy that bolted from duke, boykin, and go to cal? i think he's pac-10 bound for sure, sc or az...
