Center Court: Ben Ball (California) Open Thread

We all know who we need to win this game for:

Photo Credit: Erkki's UCLA pics' photostream (flickr)

It's Lorenzo (and Matt's) last day as Seniors at Pauley. While its not official we are also going to be seeing KL, DC (and may be even RW should he blow up in the Big Dance) last time put on their UCLA whites in the Cathedral Coach Wooden built.

We are sure Bears are going to come out wanting to spoil the party. But for the reasons mentioned alone (not to mention the need to shore up a 1 seed out West) we have to win game. For more on the Senior Day game go here.

The tip off is set for 12:30 pm PST (ABC Regional). If you are not getting the game on television you can follow it via links provided at the official site.

As always, if you are watching, listening, following, or tracking the game online, post your comments here.

This is our Ben Ball Warrior open thread.

Fire Away.

GO BRUINS.

Gotta love that fan support
Last home game for sc, playing against a top-10 opponent, and entire sections of the upper level are empty @ Galen.

anyone worried
that we had so much trouble with stanford?  I think its obvious ucla isnt playing at its best right now, but I just hope Shipp gets out of his shooting slump.

by chourobin on Mar 8, 2008 12:06 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

No
They're a top-10 team with two athletic, future lottery pick big men (Brook this year, Robin next year).

AND
good coaching, a work ethic on the floor, a team approach to the game.  There is a reason they are in the nation's top 10 teams.

Lavin needs to complete his sentences
After saying "dominant program last three years", he should have added "unlike when I was the head coach here, and ran the program into the ground."

Hardin is out
Klove should have big game. Everything is awesome except having to listen to Lavin

by Bruins095 on Mar 8, 2008 12:35 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Heh
Did Lavin just say Anderson has "21 points and 10 rebounds on the year"?

That would be about 0.7 ppg and 0.3 rpg.

What's the rule on
Shipp is off the court after scoring.

They put the ball into play before he got back on the court. Is that right?

by Class of 66 on Mar 8, 2008 12:55 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I think Stanford left it
all on the court against us.

In the parts of the sc game I was watching, they didn't look like the same team.

And, sc's full court press bothered them

If UCLA doesn't score on their next possession, they might as well kiss the season good-bye.  Just kidding. It is nice to be able to watch a game with some element of calm- these grinders recently (at Arizona, home to Stanford) have been nerve-racking.

Problems in the First Half
  1.  Loose defense - Cal is shooting over 50%.
  2.  Too many three point attempts - Bruins are shooting 53% on twos, but only 27% on threes.
  3.  Almost no offensive rebounding - UCLA has only one offensive board.

by Dexter Fishmore on Mar 8, 2008 1:33 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

On #2
Love is 0/3 from beyond the arc while he's dominating inside. They need to go Arizona game in there and just keep feeding him.

RW looks good when he slashes in, he needs to do that some more. When he does, he's getting good looks for himself or Love.

by Raisin on Mar 8, 2008 1:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly
Love is 4-for-4 in the paint, plus one more trip to the line, plus a feed out to Collison for an open three.  Gotta keep pounding it in there.

Yep
Cal has taken 30 shots, UCLA 28. Look for that to change significantly in the 2nd half.

We control the boards, create turnovers, and run a patient offense, we'll win going away.

Not nearly as concerned as Thursday....
the guys will make their run as always, but I would have liked to have seen that kind of AZ blowout.  It must be a natural letdown after winning the tough Pac-10 like last year.  That said, it's a must win game for seeding purposes.  Once you get to the sweet 16 though, one poor half can end your season... that's my only concern.

Been lurking for awhile, decided to finally sign myself up. The ONLY concern I have about the bruins is their tendancy to fall behind early. You may be able to get out of it here and there but come tourney time, especially deep into it, those comebacks are going to become more and more difficult.

I looked at the replay and it was a clean steal by Russell. Ryan Anderson was very careless exposing the ball expecting to get a foul. He's suppose to hold that ball to the chest when he gets it, not hold it out there for someone to slap it out.

For Fox
Klove made a long 3, off the glass a bit.

On inbond play, we got ball and knocked it down. Their guy dove for ball and knocked it out of bounds.

we inbound and to go Shipp in corner. He drives and puts up a rainbow from behind he backboard and it goes over and in.

Cal has 1.5 on clock.

Throws long down court pass. Shipp could have caught it, but instead, exuberantly punches it out of bounds. Problem -- still time on clock. They put .7 on.

Inboud and quck 3 fails.

We win.

Cal couldn't miss. UCLA couldn't buy a shot. But somehow they chipped away at the lead and once they get a chance to go ahead, they convert. Mata-Real thanks everyone for an unbelievable last game at Pauley. Wow... I miss college.

PS. Lavin and Mushmouth kept calling our play on
original inbounds a foul.

Replay shows Westbrook got ball and their guy knocked it out.

I know we can turn off the sound, but I love to hear howland yelling.

And, honestly, you can see Lavin eating his heart out. He is so disloyal it must kill him to see us pull out games, to see us come back in games in which his teams would have rolled over and lost by 30.

sjh

by Class of 66 on Mar 8, 2008 3:06 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I agree
Lavin spouting his nonsense that he expected a foul to be called. Yeah, maybe when he was coaching he'd expect to go for a foul instead of trying to strip the ball and go for the win. Then Steve saying that the baseline official was blocked out by Ryan Anderson and that's why there was no foul? No Steve-o, it's because there was no foul. Russell got a clean strip of the ball and Ryan Anderson knocked it out of bounds. Anderson blew it by not securing the ball.

Have they seen us play?
because on the postgame show they said that UCLA is tourney team without a fatal flaw. Considering all the bitching and moaning around here this week, that is hard to believe.

by Dodger Hater on Mar 8, 2008 3:10 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

The key to that statement
is FATAL flaw.  All teams, like all people are flawed.  The statement reflects the fact that they keep winning games despite their flaws, because they overcome them, refuse to give up, and find ways to win.

That being said, what IS it with you? You just really don't seem to like our team very much.

Love My Bruins

by Bruingirl83 on Mar 8, 2008 3:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm a perfectionist
and I want to see us continually improve. Our shooting--especially jump shooting--is atrocious and I like my team so much that I can't stand to see them lose. If I didn't care, I wouldn't notice.

by Dodger Hater on Mar 8, 2008 3:29 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Flaws
I think the commentator said that if there were to be a flaw that is was that the guards shoot too much rather than feeding Kevin.

My observation.  We have tons of flaws, but great UCLA teams always just find a way to overcome them to win this time of year.

by Joe Bruin on Mar 8, 2008 3:21 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think the flaw is the bench scoring
There's really nobody off of Howland's bench that is a scoring threat. Really only 4 points by the bench today after 0 against Stanford. UCLA relies heavily on their starters for production. Someone needs to step up on that bench and relieve some pressure from the team.

by UCLA4Life on Mar 8, 2008 3:23 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh my over the backboard!
I am calling out all of you media types that have been coming down on Shipp the past few weeks.  Slump, huh?  Needs to "start producing", huh?  Well you can all suck it.  GO JOSH!!!

by Durant on Mar 8, 2008 3:12 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Ummm, he has sucked totally the last few games
He stepped up huge today though, doesn't mean you can be myopic and say all those shots he bricked actually went in or something. Great great winner on his part though, showed the heart of a champion to drill that rainbow.

by bruinmike88 on Mar 8, 2008 3:17 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Definition of "Totally Sucked"
Please clarify.  Josh Shipp scored 12 today, played 43 minutes most on team Thursday (Howland would not play somebody who totally sucks), played 35 minutes vs Arizona and had 4 boards, a block and a steal and a postgame endorsement from Howland, had 17 points, 4 boards, 8 assists and 0 turnovers and 3 steals vs ASU in 36 minutes (2nd high on team), had 10 points, 3 boards and 3 steals vs Oregon in 35 minutes.

Seems like there are two choices here.  Either (A) Howland has no idea what he is doing and keeps playing somebody who has "totally sucked" in these games, or (B) Josh Shipp actually is a vital player who plays his role within the UCLA team concept, and does not actually "totally suck."  I'll go with (B).

by islandbruin on Mar 8, 2008 3:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I never said he totally sucks in general
Just that he has the last few games, that is undeniable. Chill out man.

by bruinmike88 on Mar 8, 2008 3:40 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Josh
We agree completely that in the last few games his outside shooting has been horrible.  I just think he is doing other things that make Howland want him in the game, so have a problem with "totally suck".  Maybe we are just arguing semantics.  Hopefully we can all agree that it would be great if he could regain his outside shooting touch for what will hopefully be 6 games after next weekend.

by islandbruin on Mar 8, 2008 3:58 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks Tele!
Do you happen to have the better shot of Shipp's shot, from later on? It was from that sitting camera guy, and really shows the ball go over the backboard.

by Dienekes on Mar 8, 2008 6:03 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

wow
despite the fact that it was another exhilarating win, i disagree with people mistakenly thinking josh shipp is "back." he nailed it when it mattered, but it was another game with non-existent production. i agree with dodger hater, i love my bruins just as much as everyone, but i'm a bit of a perfectionist, and i know that if we start off like this against a UNC or Kansas, there isn't going to be an opportunity for a miracle shot or a favorable call.

gotta love the outcome though. go bruins.

by deepdish on Mar 8, 2008 3:35 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

We can at least hope
that this gives Shipp the confidence he needs to start draining 3's more consistently.  He's been taking more shots in the last 4 games compared to the 6 before that and hopefully with some time now between this game and the Tourney he can spend a couple days practicing it.

by dokein on Mar 8, 2008 3:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think they're all going to be like this
Remember that Cal is a good team.  There is only one really bad team in the league -- ALL the others are good.  I don't think any other conference can say that.

What this translates to, in my opinion, is an advantage for us.  We know that any team we play can suck it up and play us hard.  We have the heart and the grit and the skill and the coaching and the karma and the mojo to be able to take the best that another team has and hang on.  I don't think any of the other teams has that intangible quality.

This team reminds me of the teams of long long ago, when Coach was coaching.  We didn't get behind often, but when we did, we still expected to win and in fact the other team also expected us to win.  That was a little 12 year period in which we were 335-22 (and those of us who were there are still wondering how we lost 22 times in 12 years.)

No team, either college or pro, has the history that we have, and the guys have bought into it.  They know that when the time comes, Edney will show them how to go coast to coast for the win.  They know that Steve Patterson will show the center hot to go outside and sink the shots.  They know that Wicks and Big Lew and the Redhead will be there showing them how to block the shot when it's needed.

Guys, this karma is tangible.  I feel it.
