Mata-Real's Pauley Send Off

Bumped. GO BRUINS. -N

Thanks to the miracle of YouTube, those of us who were not at the game yesterday, are now able to see the wonderful send off Lorenzo Mata-Real got yesterday. We have talked a number of times about how no matter what happens in the next month, LMR is a champion. If you listen closely on the video, you will hear that LMR is the first one in his family to graduate from college. I can certainly relate to LMR as I was the first one on my mom's side of the family to attend a four-year college, let alone graduate from one. We wish LMR all the best in the future and thank him for all the joy he has given us the past four years and for being a wonderful representative of UCLA.

I don't know what is going to happen over the next month, but I like our chances. But, I think it's important that we take it one game at a time. Stick to what got us to this point, and we will be fine. Sure, our shooting needs to improve, but I think our players will turn in up in the clutch.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

People have no clue
how much of an inspiration Lorenzo is. Congratulations to a wonderful young Man. I reposted the image I did for my Daughter's desktop.

It's people like Lorenzo
that represent on what being a Bruin is all about.

Lorenzo and all the Bruins
While yesterday's game was memorable, my 13 year old son and I will always remember "the shot", we will remember this team for something more...After a couple of this year's games, we went on the floor and waited for the team to come out after post game interviews, etc.  EVERYONE came out and graciously signed autographs for the kids.  EVERYONE spent time chatting with the youngsters.  EVERYONE made me proud to be an alum.  This is a testimony to Coach Howland and the fine young men he has recruited to represent my alma mater.  Regardless of what happens in the next month, they will always be champions in the eyes of my son and his father...

Love the Lo
What an amazing end to the career of an amazing player. After the game, Lorenzo was intereviewed by Don MacLean for the radio broadcast (which was played through the Pauley speakers) and Donnie Mac pointed out that his work ethic, how he was a starter last year and when he was replaced by Love, he didn't say anything, kept continuing to produce off the bench, and commended him for his efforts. He called Lorenzo "a man" and it was a very special moment.

Here's hoping we can end his NCAA career with a championship.

Long live the Lo.

--on a side note, anyone know where I can watch a full stream of the game? Or anyone with the game saved can nab me a clip of the final minute of regulation?

Indeed
Ah, Tele, I was on your smug checking out your videos. The real reason I want to see the final minute is because my friends told me I was on TV for a little bit (the guy with the facepaint) and I wanted to save it. You wouldn't have it by any chance?

I'll take a look
and post here if I post it.

Found it, I think
Unless you're the cute girl with "UCLA" on her face. I emailed you a link to the clip, in case you don't really want to "expose" yourself. Let me know when you download it, and I'll delete it.

Sweet
I got it, thanks SO MUCH.

And on certain days, I'm a cute girl with UCLA on my face. Certain days.

Lav
I was just going through Tele's highlights again and thought it was pretty funny that right before josh's shot, lavin tries to finish his though by saying "jimmy chitwood" extremely quickly under his breath then splash, josh makes it.

Lo's accomplishment
I gotta believe that Coach Wooden was so proud to watch Lo on Senior Day.  Lo is going to get his History degree in 4 years.  He never treated his time at UCLA as a mere stop on the way to the NBA.  In fact, he probably won't play in the NBA. He lived by Coach Wooden's principles and was a true student-athlete.  And of course, Lo's character is a reflection of Ben Howland's coaching.

Why I Love College Basketball...
...because of guys like Mata-Real.  Giving the ol' "college try" day in, day out; w/ grace, humility and class.

We'll miss you buddy.

by Rich1996UCLA on Mar 10, 2008 1:44 AM PDT   0 recs

I know I'm going to miss him
but it's probably not going to REALLY hit home until next year when we look down the bench and he's not there. He has been such a constant steadying force over the past 4 years. Bravo Lorenzo. You deserve to hang a banner. Let's hope we can deliver one for you.

by Tydides on Mar 10, 2008 1:49 AM PDT   0 recs

A great sight to see
would be LO back on the bench in a few years as an assistant coach.

by bornagainbruin on Mar 10, 2008 10:36 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Just a guess
I wouldn't be surprised to see a Mr. Mata-Real standing in front of a bunch of high school kids as South Gate High teaching them about history, then going over to the gym to help the boys and girls basketball coaches.  I have no inside info on this at all -- it just seems to me that he's more of a home town guy with a sense of community running through every part of him.

Don't you think he would be a great high school teacher?  The kids would worship him.  (Sort of like we do, I guess.)

Just to solidify your point
I would have posted this, but I thought it was already posted a few months ago. Still, it deserves another look. Also, notice that Coach Howland took time out to honor Lorenzo on his special day.

(Note to BN editors: I have tried to use the HTML embedding tags from YouTube, but for whatever reason, when I submit my responses, it tells me there has been an error. Many thanks for cleaning up my messes)

And what a mensch Coach Howland is
South Gate High is obviously not a hotbed of Bball talent.  He wasn't going there to recruit.  He was going there to honor one of his guys.  I can't think of many more stand-up guys than Coach Howland.  justsc - you got who you deserved, and we got who we deserved.

by Fox 71 on Mar 10, 2008 2:06 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Damn - Gonna miss him
Good Luck to him for whatever he decides for his future
