Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

On Outside the Lines tomorrow, ESPN plans on releasing the results of its investigation of O.J. Mayo's relationship with L.A. "event promoter" Rodney Guillory. Might be interesting viewing for Bruins fans!

I don't think OJ ever followed the rules

but from his actions last year I have no ill will towards him (outside of him being a trojan). I think he handled himself well and any complaints about him can probably can be attributed to Floyd. The results of the investigation will be interesting, but I’m not wishing he be found guilty of breaking rules. I hope he followed the rules, especially now that he’s off to the NBA anyways.

If he didn't allegedly follow rules ...

and SuC was aware of him (allegedly) not following rules … should SuC pay a price?

Remember what UCLA did when they became aware that JaRon Rush (might have) violated AAU rules? Our ath. dept. immediately imposed suspension on him, alerted the NCAA. Rush didn’t get to come back until NCAA had done a full investigation and exonerated Rush.

We saw nothing like that from SuC.

I was just talking about OJ

If USC was aware of violations then they should be punished. This doesn’t change my opinion about OJ. The guys were paying him off when he was 15. If you’re 15 and people are telling you how good you are and are willing to pay you, there aren’t a lot of 15 year olds who are going to turn it down. I don’t blame OJ because an adult took advantage about him. It’s more a problem of the system, but that’s a whole other conversation. If SC did know about this though, they should certainly be punished.

Disagree a bit, Rye

I think you’re cutting him too much slack. I’m not a big time Division 1 athlete, but I know you can’t take money from an agent. And OJ’2’s decision to sign with the same agency who paid all these bills is only a coincidence if you think the emperor is wearing fine new clothes. The only reasonable conclusion that can be drawn from the evidence is that OJ2 was getting paid for performing and knew he was getting paid. There might be a question of what Timmeh and Mike Garrett knew and when they knew it, but if they swear they knew nothing (The “Sergeant Schultz Defense”) then that’s basically an admission of a lack of institutional control.

I don’t think it’s even a close question. And I also am not ready to forgive OJ2. His misconduct should lead to the death penalty for justsc. If I were a justsc basketball fan (or more accurately, if I were one of the dozen or so such fans), I would forever despise OJ2, because whether he’s 15 or 20 or 25 or whatever age, he KNEW he was violating the ncaa rules and that those violations could get the school in major hot water. He obviously could care less about the collateral damage his shopping spree had on his alma mater. I am certainly glad that Coach Howland recruits character guys, and not OJ2 guys.

Based on recent events

The punch in the face notwithstanding, OJ2 seemed to be on the up and up. However, for me it is not a matter of rooting for something to come out, I simply want the truth. If the truth of the matter is that SUC and OJ2 broke the rules, then I want both parties to be punished to the fullest extent possible.

Culture at $cjc

I, actually, was surprised by OJ2’s demeanor on the court last year. When they beat us, I didn’t see him going crazy and whooping it up and acting like a clown (like several others on his team). And when he played horribly and we beat them, he didn’t whine or pout. He seemed to have a fairly level mature attitude for the circumstances (must come from being 29 years old, or something like that…).

Now, I wouldn’t be one bit surprised if he were involved in illegal activities at Scjc. We know the culture of cheating that exists there. It would be no surprise at all if their top BB recruit in years were involved in some “Bush league” behavior.

However, if ESPN is advertising the release of its investigation, and not advertising “shocking revelations discovered!!!”, then there probably isn’t much there. But they can’t dodge bullets forever.
