It's "Official": LSU Releases Bobo

Just posted by Jill Painter:

BATON ROUGE - LSU men's basketball coach Trent Johnson announced on Tuesday that he has granted signee J'Mison "Bobo" Morgan a release from his national letter of intent that he signed with the Tigers in November 2007.

Morgan is from Dallas, Texas and played at South Oak Cliff High School.

"The bottom line with me will always be that I want players here who want to play for LSU," Johnson said. "There is some closure with this decision, but no player will ever be bigger than the program."

And from the AP :

J’Mison Morgan will not play basketball for Louisiana State University.

Coach Trent Johnson said Tuesday that he had granted Morgan, who played at South Oak Cliff High School in Texas, a release from the letter of intent Morgan had signed in November.

Morgan’s mother, Bianca Morgan, said her son, a 6-foot-10, 275-pound center, will go to UCLA.

She said Morgan wanted to do something different in light of changes in the LSU program.

I'd say we wait to celebrate until Morgan officially signs that nonbinding scholarship agreement with UCLA.

Still great news!

Go Bruins!

Why do we NEVER hear from Morgan directly????

Its ALWAYS his mom or his brother talking. That scares me a little bit…I hope their personalities (mom and brother) that seem to crave way more than their fair share of J’Mison’s spotlight do not serve as a distraction to our program next year.

Morgan has already provided few quotes -

- about how he thought UCLA was a “good fit.” I am glad that we are not hearing much from the recruit during this process.

As for Morgan’s family they are not any more quotable than Stan Love who was never shy about being quoted by the press. That worked out well for UCLA. Same case here. Just my 2 cents.

I like your take on it better...

I choose to believe your opinion and trust that coach Howland would not bring in a player that would compromise the chemistry of our team or the reputation of our program. (ahem ahem OJ2 ahem ahem!)

Props to Trent for sticking to his word

And looking classy in the end. I’m not surprised by these actions but it’s increasingly rare lately.

If, if, IF!!! he comes aboard...

... there will finally be something close to balance in our Four-ce.

Seriously. Look at the height breakdowns, from tallest to smallest:

6-11 Morgan©
6-9 Gordon (PF/C)
6-8 Luc (with extra wingspan) (PF—he’s an NBA SF, but he’s clearly a college PF)
6-8 Aboya (no guarantees, but still) (PF/C)
6-8 Keefe (PF)
6-8 Drago (no guarantees) (SF)
6-5 Shipp (SF/SG)
6-5 Roll (SG/SF)
6-4 Lee (SG/ PG)
6-3 Holiday (SG/PG)
6-1 Anderson (PG)
6-0 Collison (PG)

Granted, we could still use sone swingmen in the 6-6 to 6-7 range to handle bigger guards, but oh well.

6 guys over 6-7, and 6 guys under 6-7.

Comapre that to, say, last year’s rotation:

6-10 Love (C/PF)
6-9 Mata-Real©
6-8 Aboya (PF/C)
6-8 Luc (PF/SF)
6-8 Keefe (PF)
6-8 Drago (SF/SG)
6-5 Shipp (SF/SG)
6-3 Russell (SG/PG)
*6-0 Collison (PG)

No Roll, no Chace (for all intents and purposes), and no backcourt depth.

There may be hope, Bruins.

Hope, indeed.

I trust Howland

But I am a little leery of admitting a player who has already spurned the Bruins once and then asks to break his commitment to another school. Something tells me he didn’t want to come to UCLA for fear of not playing much as Love’s backup but now that Love is gone, he is excited to come out West. I hope he comes here and works his butt off to help the team and is not only just concerned about himself and making an impression to the pro scouts in what I believe is going to be is only year at college.
