(Update) LAT's "Bruin" Blogger Openly Shilling For The TrOJies

Update: Check out UniversityofChoice's email to Adam Rose . Let's all join in Go Bruins!

If there was any doubt whether TrOJie blogger on Adam Rose would be able to remain objective while writing on both "All Things Trojan" and "What's Bruin" at the same time, this week should leave no doubt.

This guy is an embarrassment.

He first hides the fact that he is a TrOJan while writing on "What's Bruins". Here is his bio on WB :

Adam Rose grew up in a house divided between UCLA and USC ... now he's writing about both. He served as Sports Editor for LAist (covering a wide range of local action) and is also a regular on KNBC 4's News Raw. Adam manages special events in the sports community when he isn't participating himself (he staggered through the LA Marathon and can often be found on local soccer fields). If you have a question about the Bruins, Trojans, or just want to give him a piece of your mind, email:

Anything missing from that bio? Just check out what his bio says on "All Things Trojan":

Adam Rose learned about the highs and lows of USC athletics while going to school. As a freshman, he watched the football team crash to the bottom of the Pac 10. By the time he was a senior, he was in the stands for a National Championship. In between, he liked to argue points as a member of the Trojan Debate Squad. Nowadays, he's just looking to tell a good story. He is currently Sports Editor for LAist, where he covers a wide range of local action. He can also be seen weekly on KNBC 4's News Raw. Adam manages special events in the sports community when he isn't participating himself (he staggered through the LA Marathon and can often be found on local soccer fields). If you have a question about the Trojans or just want to give him a piece of your mind, email: adam@laist.com

What a clown.

And he is showing he is true colors now. Here is his excuse for TrOJies not noticing OJ2's bling :

How did nobody notice Reggie Bush's car or O.J. Mayo's flat-screen TV?

If you have to ask, you've never been to USC.

First, Bush's car: The campus must have the highest ratio of luxury cars-to-teenagers this side of Dubai. I'm not saying that it's impossible to notice these things, but Impalas are easily outnumbered by M3s and 911s.

Second, Mayo's TV: Not only does the same issue of "ostentatious relativity" come into play, what about the privacy of these kids? Are coaches expected to do room inspections? These are kids. Many are teenagers. Are we really trying to make sports that invasive?

He actually wrote that. And then he writes in the same post that there is no lack of institutional control issue with SuC's football program :

Externally, the football program seems to be in the clear. Although it got burned on the Reggie Bush situation, it doesn't appear that anybody at the school was really aware of what was going on. When that happens, the NCAA expects changes to be made that will prevent repeat violations. USC did so. For example, Pete Carroll has somebody checking IDs at the gates of open football practices and actively monitors for agents.

See! There ya go! No need to worry. Peetie is following all the rules.

Again LAT is allowing this TrOJan douchebag to control 'What's Bruin' .

Funny, sad, and just plain disgusting.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

I'm sure there's no conflict of interest there

Nah, it couldn’t be that he’s offering up every excuse possible to ensure that the tainted title that he was witness to as a student isn’t vacated.

by Tydides on May 14, 2008 9:44 AM PDT   0 recs

What's funny

is that he posted on “What’s Bruin” saying he hasn’t had the time to write about our water polo title because he was too busy covering spinning the OJ scandal.

by bluestreet on May 14, 2008 9:51 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

So given the choice

between bias and gross incompetence, he chose incompetence. He’s both a trOJan and on the SUC Times staff. Two things synonymous with “incompetent tool”.

Pathetic

Completely unprofessional.

Agree

This makes the paper look pathetic.

But to be completely fair to the fishwrap

it was pathetic long before they hired a trOJan to cover the Bruins. Just say no. Cancel those subscriptions. The fishwrap won’t care, of course, but it will give you a nice warm feeling deep down inside.

LAT Sports Editor Contact info

I’ve been meaning to write a strongly worded letter to the LAT sports editor detailing my disgust with the choice of Mr. Rose as the Bruin Blogger. Does any one out there have the contact info for Rose and the Editor? I’m going to give them a piece of my mind.

Victory or until next year!

by ncrpz2 on May 14, 2008 10:52 AM PDT   0 recs

I may be able to get it at work

I intern with a PR group that uses a web program that has contact info for all the major staff positions from media outlets all around the country.

I have pointed this out here

and on his blog before. I stated on his blog that it was impossible to trust someone’s reporting who has two different bios based on the audience.

"when you've seen how big the world is, how can you make due with this?"

Sorry silverlakebruin

Do you have a link to your comment or post? I can include it in my post. I missed it.

by bluestreet on May 14, 2008 2:17 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

its not worth linking to

it was just a comment in ‘WWL’s Pat Forde: Southern Cal Deserves “Death Penalty”’. You said it much better than I could. My point was that I have asked that question on his blog, and he never responds to it.

What happened to Rich Perelman?

The Bruin alum, who previously ran the blog, just sort of disappeared after March Madness, replaced by this Brain Surgeon

Goodness Gracious Sakes Alive

Leave it to a Trojan to invent a term like “ostentatious relativity” to disguise a pathetic attempt at moral relativity, or at least moral apathy.

Why didn’t Rose simply write the following?

“USC students are exclusively drawn from wealthy families, which means that we don’t have to obey the same rules as public school students and our coaches don’t need to follow basic rules to ensure that entire teams don’t get penalized when a player does something wrong.”

The funny thing is that when I was applying to colleges USC’s materials included a flier that attempted to dismiss the”University of Spoiled Children” tag and highlighted the number of students on financial aid. I guess Mr. Rose never ran into those kids.

I can’t even think of a response for his assertion that the football program looks to be under control. Unbelievable.

by FreewayBruin03 on May 14, 2008 11:31 PM PDT   0 recs

An always classic Trojan argument

That they aren’t spending public (otherwise known as taxpayer money in their arguments) money like the UCs are. Yet as you mention, they highlight the number of students on financial aid. And what kind of financial aid you may ask?

Why, I’m glad you asked, because more often than not, it is Cal Grant money.

Anyone care to guess where the Cal Grant money comes from? Ding, Ding, that’s right, it is public money!

And with the high tuition expense at USC, they are using a hell of a lot of it.

So much for the not using public money argument, huh?

Spinning...

And that is all it really is, SPIN. I think I saw this dude on ESPN giving the USC side of things. I have no problem with this other than his argument, “How can you tell player ‘X’ is receiving extra cash when this is a place of such blinding opulence” which is absolutely ridiculous! I mean, the compliance officers, coaches, and administration are not there to make sure your average “trust-fund baby” (in the words of Rose) is complying with the rules, they are there to make sure that the PLAYERS are. So, as the argument goes, they can’t watch the athletes because all the other students are getting in the way. This is utterly absurd. I think someone here said it best, he should be ashamed.

This is pure unadulterated spin and it frightens me that this dude it running the LAT Bruin Blog.

by Bruins101NCAA on May 14, 2008 11:40 PM PDT   0 recs

Two obvious comments

That this guy is in the position he is in is indicative of the arrogance of the fishwrap, thinking that it’s editorial staff knows what’s best for all, and having a trOJie report on the Bruins is really a good thing.

That this guy thinks his position is analytically sound and even marginally convincing is indicative of his trOJie arrogance and his trOJie education.

Only the fishwrap would think that the situation was acceptable, and only a trOJie would think that he could get away with publishing such drivel.

by Fox 71 on May 15, 2008 4:08 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Fox, You remember the LAT's Jon Hall?

For the benefit of the younger BN’ers out there, back in the late 60s and early 70s, the LAT had Jan Hall, a writer who was so-o-o-o-o-o in the tank for the Condoms that he thought they named Heritage Hall after him. Sadly, the LAT’s bias has always been for justsc.

by WHP '68 on May 16, 2008 5:56 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

This is nothing new.

For those of us who have been reading that rag, we’ve always known their bias. Decisions like this simply show what we already know. The Times is dying and they have been firing editorial staff left and right. I can see from their perspective that they figured one person can run the blogs for both teams. Given that choice, the sports section management showed their bias and picked someone who was already on the staff who just happened to be a Trojan. How convenient for them. What a piece of garbage that paper is.

You guys have him all wrong. The LATimes is revolutionizing sportsblogging!

I wrote the following to Bill Dwyre (who I thought was still the sports editor) and Adam Rose:

Dear Adam Rose:
Please stop presenting yourself as a Bruins fan and writing for “what’s bruin” on latimes.com.
I won’t call you names, I won’t insult you – It’s incredibly dishonest for you to straddle both sides when your sympathies are clearly with USC.
Regards,
Seanny Rotten

I received this first from Bill Dwyre:

Sean, I think this came to me because you thought I am still the sports editor..I am not..The man’s name is randy harvey..thanks for writing.
Bill dwyre

Then I got this from Adam Rose:

Dear Sean,
I don’t believe I’ve presented myself as a Bruins fan. I am a fan of sports, and I am an experienced sports blogger who is trying to create something new and exciting on both the UCLA and USC blogs. As I have said all along, we are changing the way that both blogs are managed. By the fall, we will have multiple contributors who bleed blue and gold. I will manage the project, but many of the voices will be as die-hard Bruin as they come.
You may not be aware, but the gentleman you cc’d is a Notre Dame alumni. When he was sports editor, it was a similar lightning rod for USC fans. That never deterred him from doing a great job and USC coverage never suffered. I hope to accomplish the same for this blog.
Best,
Adam

So the LATimes is changing the way sportsblogging is done, will be fairer in the future and Bill Dwyre is a Notre Dame alum so it’s all fair I guess.

by Seanny Rotten on May 15, 2008 1:07 PM PDT   0 recs

What a tool

He is doing a “great job” all right. He is doing a great job spinning for SuC. SCumbag.

by bluestreet on May 15, 2008 1:13 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Seanny - write him again

Ask him how his investigation into the SCandals at heritage hall are going. Ask him if he would like Menelaus’ long list of trOJan atrocities so he could publish it and show how fair and unbiased he is.

by Fox 71 on May 15, 2008 3:11 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Better yet..

..Sean, write him and ask him how the LAT can screw up a fundamentally simple thing like a sports blog for a certain team. I mean, if they are putting Condoms in charge of their Bruin blog and Notre Dame grads in with SC blogs, how do they expect to gather a following?

Nah, I’m gonna stick with BN. The level of discourse and erudition at this site can’t be touched by their smarmy attempts to compete.

by WHP '68 on May 16, 2008 6:04 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

UCLA

according to his la times blog bio, he was a student coach for a handful of UCLA teams. Did you mean where did he go after hosting “what’s bruin” on latimes.com? Well I have no idea. The internets have as of yet not cooperated in releasing that info to me…

by Seanny Rotten on May 15, 2008 2:37 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Thanks Seanny

I wanted to know why he was no longer writing the Blog. I thought he did a decent job.

I thought he did a good job too

Here is his farewell post. He basically says he was getting too busy with other things.

by Menelaus on May 15, 2008 5:07 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I know Rich...

I went to school with him. I haven’t talked to him in about 20 years, but I know he’s huge into the Olympics. If I were to guess, I think he’s got some gig relating to that in addition to all the other things he does, which made it impossible for him to continue the blog. BTW, he is a great guy who bleeds Bruins blue and gold, but will call it like he sees it (not a blind homer). I have great respect for the guy and am sorry he left.

by waters96 on May 17, 2008 1:54 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

To be fair...

To be fair, newspapers are dying. They just don’t earn the kind of revenue necessary to keep a large staff. They had a blogger covering college sports (albeit at SC), Adam Rose, and when Perelman quit they figured lets use what we have instead of hiring someone new and spending cash that we don’t have. Yes, it sucks for UCLA fans. But honestly, it’s not some LA Times conspiracy—just the state of traditional media today.

They probably will get a new blogger when they can. Also, keeping the tones of the letters, especially to the editors, respectful will get more done than “off with the head” comments.

by brand0n on May 17, 2008 12:57 PM PDT   0 recs

My comment has not been "off with his head"

it is and has been “done with the fishwrap.”

by Fox 71 on May 17, 2008 2:18 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Do you believe

that the wrap would have a Bruin blog about sc?

No way in the world, no matter the economics, it would not happen.

Want to save the wrap some money? Let’s put a team of BN writers together to voluntarily blog for the wrap on sc. Think of all the columns we could get if we follow up on Menelaus work.

Let’s test your theory. We are free. Many of us have better writing credentials than those held by the wrap reporters. Do you think they’ll let us do it?

by Class of 66 on May 17, 2008 3:00 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe we don't ask them..

..just go ahead and do it. I would suggest another motif and as much separation as possible from BN so as to minimize troll traffic here. It might be good to have a a venue be a lightening rod - a la the venerable Dump Dorrell site - for these shenanigans. Think of the great times we could have debating with the gorts that show up there to defend the Condomites.

Can’t imagine what the witty repartee will be like; should be scintillating.

If you like, I can look into web hosting space for a site.

by WHP '68 on May 17, 2008 5:03 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually -- He's Included BN Content in the Blog

Just went to his blog because I couldn’t find any coverage of UCLA Softball on the main sports page. Wanted to know what time today’s game will be. (Couldn’t find anything there, either. Local paper and no coverage of a #2 seed and exciting game?)

Anyway, noticed that Rose has posted some BN content—including Menelaus’ seminal piece on sc misconduct. In my mind, prop’s to Rose for disseminating what may be he best compilation on sc misconduct written. Would I prefer that a Bruin be writing this blog? Yes. But, if it becomes a distribution point for work like Menelaus’, that’s good too.

Misdirected funds

Then the LAT should be paying Menelaus, since he’s doing the real work for “our Bruin blogger”.

But more importantly, the game is at 2:30 PST. See Nestor’s post
