WWL's Katz on President Aboya
Bumped. GO BRUINS. -N
We all know what's going on with Mayo, $C, and the accompanying media circus that follows, but here's a story from the blog of WWL's Katz (you'll have to be an Insider subscriber to read the whole story) that sits a bit closer to home that will put a smile on your face:
"Do you want to hear a good story, about someone who is fully taking advantage of being in college?" UCLA faculty rep Don Morrison said. "I give you Alfred Aboya as exhibit A. He's graduating in three years, and he wants to be the president of Cameroon. I'm really psyched about that."Morrison pointed to Aboya for some good news in the sport. Aboya is a perfect example of a young man who is taking full advantage of what the scholarship is offering him at UCLA.
We've all discussed Aboya's future and personally (as a current poli sci undergrad and student-employee of the athletic department), I would not mind at all if he left, knowing that great things are waiting for him. Anyways...that two-year graduate program sounds interesting to me once I graduate in a year.
GO BRUINS!

Shucks...
...looks like the admins edited my post…haha. I knew I over-blockquoted, but I didn’t know if people wanted to read the full Insider blog entry since it should only be available to subscribers. Thanks for the edit, though.

Grad school
I guess the blockquote edit took out the part that the grad school program is at UCLA. He also plans on returning to the team next year.

UCLA's School of Public Policy...
and like I mentioned, it’s a two-year graduate program. The blog post mentions that Aboya may put off his UCLA career (both on the court in classroom) if he gets interest from a professional team through his play with Cameroon. But like stated by Gen, Aboya does plan on coming back, take his classes if accepted, and hopefully run for president when he reaches the required age (35).

The program presumably is the MPP, Master of Public Policy in the Department of Public Policy in the School of Public Affairs. I am going to the alumni celebration of the first 10 years of the program tomorrow. I’ll ask the SAO there what the deal is. For anyone interested, the program is a mix of poli sci, economics, statistical methods of policy analysis along with some management/leadership/navigating-a-bureaucracy work. Probably a good fit for his goals (and I am sure I’ll be volunteering to come back and TA if he’s in the class!)
On a separate point – the applications would have been due months ago, and acceptances will have already been issued. While I am sure they will be interested in taking him – they enjoy the diversity that international students bring to the school, and don’t have many applicants from his continent – it looks like he will be circumventing the process other people have gone through if he hasn’t already applied and been accepted.

or alternatively...
...Katz might be way out of date with his information.
In any case – Go Bruins.
