He said the same thing Farmar did

about the way UCLA played defensively and his ability on spread court offense not showing as much. It was almost like he had to think for a milisecond before saying it, like he’s been coached; to make sure people here that disclaimer; like it was a point that needed to be checked off. He looks really good but only had a year with UCLA and Farmar two. This system of players using the college programs for the NBA really bothers me. It’s not Kevin’s fault of course but use the program, go to the NBA and oh, on your way, make sure they know your college program took away from showcasing your offensive skills and total package. I don’t think it’s fair to the program that these kids are saying this about the program to advance their draft status. You won 37 games, were an All-American and Pac-10 player of the year. What can the NBA and scouts possibly hold against you in the draft that could be blamed on UCLA?

I Hate the One-and-Done But,

in the words of CTS, “It is what it is”.

If ever a team has to have a one-and-done, I cannot think of a better person to have than Kevin Love. Notice, I said person, not player. He took advantage of school, gave to the community, and used the year for more than filling the black hole between high school and college.

We are a better place for having had him here—and I don’t mean just the basketball program.

I do not take his comments as being critical of CBH. I didn’t think Farmar was critical either. Both told the truth and did it with reverence and not critically.

BTW—The difference in KL’s physical condition is striking. And, who was the first person to tell him he was out of shape? Yes, you got it CBH.

If I were going to be a one-and-done, I’d want CBH to coach me. He bolsters the D side of the ball—something most high school players don’t have to develop. That’s one reason KL is so prepared to enter the draft.

PS. From what I understand, he hasn’t hired an agent yet. Is that right? I keep dwelling on the comment in the “basketball manager thread” that KL is “probably gone” while RW is “gone”. Although, watching that workout video it’s hard to conceive that he won’t be a very high pick.

Agree

You can tell even if you just looked at his face how much better shape he is in. And I agree with the tone of your PS, sure looks like it should be Love that is the gone and RW as the probably, rather than the other way around. There is not much else Love can do other than what he is doing, getting in amazing shape. Westbrook I believe needs to prove more that he can hit the mid range shot and run a team from the point. Yes, he did it for us a little, but not for an extended period of time.

If Westbrook does go, what an amazing coaching card for Howland to play. No question, much of the credit has to go to Westbrook himself, but how many coaches can claim a guy who was barely of people’s radar screen in high school and two years later he becomes a high NBA pick?

I think what I'm saying and you'll agree

is that it feels like someone in the NBA, general managers, scouts, are telling these UCLA players coming out to make that point to help draft status. I remember talking about this a year ago when I think Afflalo said it after Farmar had because I remember talking about hoping there wasn’t a pattern developing. It’s like the NBA wants the player to separate himself from the grinding, team-defensive game that is the antithesis to the playground NBA game. I guess what upsets me is I hate the NBA game anyways and it seems to be diminishing the college game. I used to like the Lakers and now I can’t watch a whole game, at all, and they’re the best team in the NBA. I’m only making a big deal, for the record, because this is the third UCLA player that has said this.

On a side note, KL looks great and I’m glad we had him but he also was given a chance at one of the more valuable educations in the country and great exposure so it’s an equal two-way street.
