The Lakers and Ben Ball
How great was it last night to watch the Lakers play trademark Ben Ball to come back on the Spurs last night! Normally I don't tend to think of the Lakers as a defensive team simply because their offense is so powerful, but it was great to see everybody talk about how the defensive stops and intensity sparked the comeback.
What was particularly encouraging was the clutch play of reserve Jordan Farmar :
This series will most likely be decided by the performance of both teams' respective Big Threes. For much of the game, however, the Lakers' trio of leading scorers consisted of Pau Gasol, Vladimir Radmanovic and Jordan Farmar, as Bryant and Fisher combined for only two points in the first half -- the backcourt's lowest scoring output from this season.
Listening to the announcers on the game (sorry Fox, bad habits!) it was fascinating to hear them talk about the defensive intensity of the Lakers in the key third quarter when the need for a run was palpable...again, Farmar's name came up as being part of the young, energetic intensity that Phil Jackson used to spark the run. Heck, even Kobe was preaching the values of defensive intensity !
"If we don't play defensively, we still don't win, and everybody would be talking about how I shot us out of the game," Bryant said. "Defense is where it gets done."
So what does this have to do with Ben Ball? I think that the performance of Farmar, the public attention about how defense is what is causing the pros to succeed in the playoffs, can only help our mystique and increase the effectiveness of our recruiting efforts. And frankly, watching the Bruins and the Lakers never say die, play passionately to close out games, refusing to lose in tight circumstances...continues to inspire me to be a better person...

In Kobe's defense,
He is (and has been for a while) an excellent defender.
It is nice to see that 4 strong defensive teams fighting for the NBA title. The Lakers do not have the reputation like the Pistons, Spurs, or this years Celtics, but they can defend. Certainly better than Denver or Seattle. It is great to see Coach Howland leaving his mark on the NBA a little with the excellent prep he gives his players who move on.

Farmar's turnaround has been amazing
I had not seen anyone play worse than he did in the first 8 playoff games. Since then, he’s turned it around, culminating in a GREAT game last night. What mental toughness from a young player to turn it around in a high pressure situation.

Farmar has always had confidence
Sure, this led to some frustrating moments for us fans when he was here, but far more often than not, his self-confidence was an asset to our team more than a detriment. All pro ballplayers say that they believe every shot they take should go in or every play they make will turn out well. I think Farmar is one of those that truly believes it. To guys with this mentality, I think words like “slump” are meaningless. He might go back to having another bad game in game 2, but I know he’ll be out there trying to execute the Zen Master’s gameplan the same way he has been the past 93 games.

Good to hear
I didn’t get to watch last night’s game. These games are on too late for me! I can stay up for UCLA games no problem … but for some reason just can’t make it for others.

9 PM Starts
are awfully rough if you work. On the flipside, people over on this side of the country aren’t even off of work when east coast games start.

Yeap
Especially when I wake up during ridiculous hours in the AM just so I could read as much UCLA related stuff as I can to get my fix and let it out here.
So basically I have reserved Fall and Winter as the only season when I stay up during Thursday nights to take in certain sports action involving a team playing in blue and gold. Will try to catch the Lakers this weekend.
Have my fingers crossed. There are lot of Celtics/Pistons lovers in this part of the country.
