UCLA Lands A Blue Chip Quarterback

This was just a matter of time.

Neuheisel and Chow were taking their time with offering a blue chip quaterback for the class of 2009. Last week Norm Chow was out at at Upland High and Los Osos of Rancho Cucamonga to check out Josh Nunes and Richard Brehaut. After Chow took down the initial notes, Neuheisel followed up by checking both of them out at quaterback guru Steve Clarkson's camp in Santa Barbara.

After checking them out Neuheisel (I am sure following consultation with Chow) made an offer and received an instant commitment. From Dohn :

UCLA received a non-binding oral commitment from Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos High quarterback Richard Brehaut.
The commitment comes after UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel saw both Brehaut and Upland quarterback Josh Nunes at an event over the weekend in Santa Barbara.

Here is the confirmation from BruinBlitz. Brehaut is a 4 star QB who is ranked number 22 per Scout.com and the 9th best pro-style QB for the class of 2009 according to rivals.com. From Brehaut's profile in BRO database :

During his 2007 junior season at Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) Los Osos, Brehaut passed for 2,348 yards and 22 touchdowns against eight picks. Completed 65% of his passes. Rushed for 528 yards and five touchdowns.

Academically, has a 3.6 GPA.

As a sophomore in 2006, was 90-for-136 for 1,298 yards and eight touchdowns and rushed for 227 yards and seven touchdowns in eight games. Didn't start until game five of his sophomore season. Won the "Golden Arm" Accuracy Award at the Elite 11 Workout in Berkeley in May 2007.

Brehaut also had offers from schools such as Oregon, Colorado, Washington, and Nebraska. Clarkson had this to say about the commitment in the LA Times:

On Monday, Los Osos quarterback Richard Brehaut announced he has committed to UCLA, and quarterback guru Steve Clarkson offered his endorsement.

"I think he's a tremendous quarterback," Clarkson said. "He's very mobile, very accurate and throws a great spiral."

Brehaut won out over Upland's Josh Nunes, who Clarkson also thinks highly of, in an apparently close competition for the UCLA scholarship.

"I've seen both, and they're tremendous," Clarkson said.

No surprise with coaches like Chow in staff and the pedigree Neuheisel has developed as a QB coach, they can be in the position to take their time evaluating QB talents, make an offer and receive this kind of instant commitment.

Now they can move on to recruiting some OL. Brehaut becomes the 7th commitment for the class of 2009 , which is off to an impressive start .

GO BRUINS.

UPDATE -N: Tracy Pierson from Bruin Report Online had a chance to talk to the latest Bruin QB commit (non-premium article at the time of this update:

"Coach Norm Chow offered me over the phone and I committed on the spot," Brehaut said. "It was such a great opportunity. UCLA is a great school, and football program with great academics." [...]

"I was excited," Brehaut said. "My family is really excited. I'm planning on going up to UCLA this week and talk to Coach Neuheisel and Coach Chow some more." [...]

Brehaut said: "The opportunity was too good. I was also starting to get tired of recruiting so it was a relief. It was good timing because I was planning to go visit some other schools this week but when UCLA offered I knew that's where I wanted to go." Brehaut said his plan is to now attend UCLA's one-day and three-day camps in June and he's also "looking forward to getting close to the other commits."

Welcome to Westwood Richard. GO BRUINS.

And so it begins...

I posted this here last week, that while I think it will take us 3-4 years to get established as a consistent competitor (it will take longer in FB than it did in BB), that the football program is going the right way, because we have great leaders here, and CRN and OCNC and DCDW will start winning over some top recruits, and our talent level will improve, and our results will improve, and the program will get better, and more top recruits will some here, and so on and so on…

Also, great to see a kid with a good GPA instantly latch on to a school with “great academics”. Can’t guess why he hadn’t committed to CU or Nebraska already!

"Brehaut won out"

I love that CRN/NC, etc. are making UCLA a destination worth fighting for again. I don’t seem to remember a lot of (highly touted) recruits during the KD era fighting tooth and nail for the offer.
