UCLA Ski/Snowboard Team 2008 SCCSC Champions!!!

Bumped. GO BRUINS.-N

The 2008 UCLA Ski and Snowboard Club Team took 1st place overall in the Southern California Collegiate Ski & Snowboard Conference, beating out Cal Poly Pomona, CSULB, SDSU, UCSB, UCSD and USC.  The UCLA Ski Team took 2nd place and the Snowboard Team took 1st.  The competition was comprised of four events: giant slalom, slalom, Boarder/Skiier-Cross, and Slopestyle, taking place over number of weekends from December to March.  Full results can be seen here.

Certain outstanding Bruins must be congratulated.

Sophomore ski sensation Julie Fair won 1st place overall in a field of 40 female skiers.  Sophia Berry and Britt Lindstrom were awarded 3rd and 5th place, respectively.

Freshman phenom skier, and former Squaw Valley Ski Team member, Charles Graves took 1st place in Giant Slalom and Slalom, earning him 2nd place overall in a field of 65.

Among 40 female snowboarders, senior and team vice president Melissa Yee placed 3rd overall.  Sophomore snowboard team captain Bre Wright placed 4th overall and also took home 1st place in women's slopestyle (she's better than most guys).

The man of the hour was junior and team president Justin Globerson.  Among 90 male snowboard competitors, Globerson took 4th place in Slopestyle, 2nd place in Giant Slalom, and 1st place in Boarder-cross, earning him 1st place overall.  In addition to his athletic achievements, the UCLA Team President was honored with the "Team Officer of the Year" award for his exemplary display of leadership.

On a personal note, I must add that in my 7 years at UCLA (undergrad and graduate school), I have never met a group of individuals as genuine, sincere, and determined as these young men and women are.  Once again, they prove on and off the "field" that UCLA produces the greatest student athletes.  I am proud to be part of their team and they make me proud to be a Bruin.

Congratulations to the UCLA Ski and Snowboard Team for an amazing year of excellence.

CONGRATULATIONS!!
To each and every one of these Bruin student atheletes. All of that talent, skill, leadership and committment...and they are all great-looking, to boot. Big thanks, also, to each of them for representing UCLA with so much class.

UCLA - A winter sports school, too.
Awesome, and congratulations.

It's also fun to look at the picture and guess who are the skiers and who are the knuckle draggers.

LOL
Not to add to the inevitable flame war, but as a skier, that was hilarious.

Oooh...
Funny how these so-called knuckle draggers are causing the evolution of snow sports.  =P

I keep it real
Globes and I were talking on the way home about how we could get UCLA to sponsor us for Nationals.  I figure that won't happen until they recognize us as a legit athletic team.  Considering that Nestor has created THE BEST collegiate sports blog for THE BEST college, I figured this would be a good place to start.  What we really need to start doing is filming and posting slopestyle runs.  And of course, once Bre becomes the first Bruin to win the Winter X games, the club will take off.

The one with the funny looking asian kid on her?
The lovely Amber.  She's a "knuckle dragger," though.  =P

ya,
the one with the asian kid for an earing.  She might not be running NASA someday but she has to have some intelligence if she's playing and maintaining at UCLA.

Well...
First of all I am the asian earing (just for clarification).  Secondly the "knuckle dragger" was  a reference to gbruin's post, in that she is a snowboarder, not a knock on her intelligence.  She's an absolute sweetheart who used to model for Men's Health and various other mags.

Hey JKNaka
Was just teasing, dude. You know how it is on the mountain.  I'm old school with two feet and two skis (Atomic, exclusively, btw).  Doesn't mean I don't love my Bruin new schoolers and boarders. I might still jump out of the way when I hear someone scraping down sideways above me, but if you (or Amber, or any other Bruin for that matter) get out to Colorado, look me up and we'll go shred - you on yours and me on mine. Peace!

No worries gbruin

I know you were just teasing, and I was just trying to keep up with the playful banter. :) Actually, next year’s snowboard captain Matt Clawson is from Northern CO and he’s already mentioned planning a trip out there. I’ll keep you posted should it transpire.

Go Bruins!!!
