Quest For Bru-104: Sunday Night Baseball Open Thread

We are done with the Bru-103 watch.

On to Bru-104. And we have one more shot left for the 2007-08 season.

Jermaine Curtis, Brandon Crawford and Alden Carrithers, (aka the Killer Cs) and their team mates are on fire.  With their backs against the proverbial wall the Bruins stormed into the post season and yesterday they sent a message to the rest of the country by pummeling the perennial powerhouse Titans on their home field. But they started clicking since we looked to these guys for serving up some MOJO for baseball open thread. So we will stick with what has been working last few weeks:

Softballmojo

This "softball mojo" is our way of sending our little something to the team so they can keep up the late season rally.

Our baseball teams need one more win to advance to the super regionals. They will look to get it done tonight at Fullerton’s Goodwin Field starting at 8 pm PST (against the winner of CSUF/UVa game). The game is going to be broadcast live on ESPNU. As always you can track the game online via the official site. But if you live in Southern California, please head out to Fullerton and support our boys in person. You can get all the ticket information here.

Otherwise for the rest of us spanning the entire globe - this is the place to rock and roll with the Bruin Nation.

Swing away.

GO BRUINS.

can we stick a softball picture on this thread? It’s been working for the baseball team the past few weeks.

Stanford-UC Davis

An elimination game with the winner to face Pepperdine.

Tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the 8th, Davis get a run to put them ahead. Considering the Aggies swept the Cardinal in the regular season and beat them in the regional opener, Stanford seemed destined to give up and start packing their bags, right? Nope. Stanford struck for 5 in the top of the 9th and beat the Aggies 8-4.

Stanford and Pepperdine will play tonight with a Pepperdine win sending them to Supers and a Stanford win forcing a deciding game tomorrow. The winner of this regional will play the winner of the Fullerton regional.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jun 1, 2008 4:45 PM PDT reply actions

We've got our first Super Regional team
1 national seed Miami advances with a win over Ole Miss.

Other west coast teams still alive:

UC Irvine has a 2-0 lead in the 3rd over Oral Roberts. The Anteaters are 2-0 in their regional so Oral Roberts has to win twice to advance.

Arizona leads Kentucky 2-0 in the 4th. Arizona is also 2-0 and needs to win only 1 of 2 to advance.

Fresno St. and San Diego are the two remaining teams in the Long Beach regional. Fresno is the 2-0 team there.

Arizona St. will face Oklahoma tonight as the 2-0 team.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jun 1, 2008 4:57 PM PDT reply actions

Fullerton has a 3-0 lead over Virginia

in the 3rd inning. Virginia has already pulled their starter and gone to Matt Packer. Packer was probably going to get the start tonight if they advanced so the Virginia staff is thin now. More reason to root for the Cavs.

Well when you have an umpire like that one

whose imagination is running wild you’re going to be in trouble.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jun 1, 2008 6:01 PM PDT up reply actions

if anyone was watching the CSUF-UVA game in the 6th

can you possibly explain the runner’s interference call on UVA in the 6th? Because I can’t believe that call was made.

For those of you who didn’t see it, UVA had the bases loaded, 0 out in the bottom of the 6th. The batter hit a grounder to 1st, and the 1st baseman threw to second for the force. No further play was possible, so it appeared as though the score was 4-1, with UVA runners on the corners with one out.
However, the umpire ruled that the runner going into second had made an illegal slide by raising his elbow to prevent the double play from occuring. By rule, the batter is also out, and all runners have to return to their bases. So now, it was still 4-0, with runners on 2nd and 3rd with two out.
The only problem was that the UVA runner made a perfectly legal slide. He did absolutely nothing wrong…so basically the 2nd base umpire cost UVA at least 1 run, and probably more, as the next hitter made out and the inning ended.

I would’ve much rather played UVA than Fullerton, so I was extremely disappointed when that call was made. The ump may have made our road to Omaha much more difficult.

That being said, we beat CSUF last night and we can do it again. GO BRUINS

by bucknellbruin on Jun 1, 2008 6:58 PM PDT reply actions

There's not much to explain

The umpire blew the call. He claimed it was an illegal slide, but there was nothing wrong with it. It was just an example of an umpire’s imagination running wild.

P.S. Congrats on the Bison’s upset of FSU Friday. They didn’t make it oit of the regional, but they had one great game that they won’t ever forget.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jun 1, 2008 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions

friday

they shut FSU out; today they allowed 24 runs…hahaha when has that ever happened before
i was bummed but i still found it hilarious

by bucknellbruin on Jun 1, 2008 7:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Thats a real shame this wont be on tv

anywhere in so-cal…you’d think with all the softball coverage on WWL that one of the FSNs would at least pick up some good local baseball..too bad.

O.A.

by Ollie on Jun 1, 2008 7:07 PM PDT reply actions

Well ESPN has the exclusive rights to all the tourney games

They sell the rights for some regionals they don’t televise to some local channels but they’re covering this one on ESPNU.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jun 1, 2008 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Road to 104- is baseball the only remaining shot?

Men’s track is ranked 3rd in the country (per official website), and narrowly missed winning western regional.

Is there no way they can win, or could baseball possibly be on the march to 105 instead of 104?

Game about to start

Rankin starting for CSUF – Bruins hitting at the top of the 1st tonight

by bruinhoo on Jun 1, 2008 8:06 PM PDT reply actions

mid 1st, 0-0

Curtis stranded on 2nd. Gavin Brooks will be pitching at the bottom of the inning

by bruinhoo on Jun 1, 2008 8:16 PM PDT reply actions

0-1, bottom 1st

a throwing error on an attempted pick-off play set up an RBI single.

by bruinhoo on Jun 1, 2008 8:31 PM PDT reply actions

Man

Brooks got the first two outs and the bottom just dropped out. That pickoff throwing error was horrible.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 8:32 PM PDT reply actions

Brooks

walks the bases loaded. All this with 2 outs.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 8:36 PM PDT reply actions

Phew

Flare out to Crawford. Titans leave the bases loaded. 1-0 CSUF after 1.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 8:39 PM PDT reply actions

Waiting for that

All those pitches away in the dirt, one finally got away. 1-1. This guy is wild.

by Give me a B... on Jun 1, 2008 8:53 PM PDT reply actions

Babineau

struck out on ball 4 too.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 8:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Yup

Should be another run in and one out. Oh, well.

by Give me a B... on Jun 1, 2008 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Brandon Crawford ties the game!

Walk, takes second on a wild pitch (risky move as the ball barely got away from the catcher), took third on a fielder’s choice off Tim Murphy’s bat and scored on another wild pitch.

And Dolan hits a single to left field now.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 8:54 PM PDT reply actions

Bruins Score!

1-1 on a wild pitch! Go Bruins

For the record

I’ve followed more sports via the internet this month, than maybe ever. Thanks for all the updates guys.

by Menelaus on Jun 1, 2008 8:55 PM PDT reply actions

Dang, I thought

Curtis’ IF single would slowly roll into the outfield for an RBI. Hope they can get this run in.

Nope, strike out. Both teams have left the bases loaded.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 9:02 PM PDT reply actions

Dunno

They are infield hits, though. Their pitchers’ wildness is great, though.

Now Brooks’ wildness isn’t great.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah their pitcher is pretty unstable right now.

I really hope we take of this tonight when they are tired. Because, best of 3 series with CSUF scares me a lot and tomorrow will be much harder.

by dproduct on Jun 1, 2008 9:07 PM PDT up reply actions

2 Catcher's Interferences in 2 nights?

I’ll go entire seasons without seeing one at all.

by Give me a B... on Jun 1, 2008 9:08 PM PDT reply actions

Sac Bunt

Runners at 2nd and 3rd, 1 out. I’m not sure I’d bunt until I could prove Brooks could throw a strike.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 9:12 PM PDT reply actions

It's like

watching Rick Ankiel out there. :(

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 9:14 PM PDT reply actions

Finally pulled

Bases loaded. The last 7 hitters have: gotten 1 out, 1 sacrifice bunt for an out, 3 walks and 2 HBPs. Plus the wild pitches and throwing error. =\

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 9:15 PM PDT reply actions

Drummond coming in

A double play here would be fantastic.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 9:16 PM PDT reply actions

Balk. 1-2 CSUF

well, not the best way for Drummond to start out

by bruinhoo on Jun 1, 2008 9:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Killer, balk

Didn’t see that at all.
Now seeing eye single knocks in two more.

by Give me a B... on Jun 1, 2008 9:18 PM PDT reply actions

RBI double

5-1 CSUF. Still 1 out.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 9:21 PM PDT reply actions

Gapper

another one in. Looks like we’re in for a long night

by Give me a B... on Jun 1, 2008 9:21 PM PDT reply actions

Don't want to be overly negative

A 4-run lead is nothing in college baseball, especially as the opposing pitcher has displayed poor control and has had to sit around a long time. But you absolutely must stop the bleeding here.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 9:23 PM PDT reply actions

An out!!!

Finally, a non-sacrifice out! Two outs.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 9:24 PM PDT reply actions

You know Drumm

Nearly crapped his pants with that hit haha.

by dproduct on Jun 1, 2008 9:25 PM PDT reply actions

This is Reminidng Me of Softball

Bruins are outhitting CSUF but are trailing because of weird errors, mental and physical. Balk, bad pickoff, 2HBPs.

Also sytikcing out in clutch situations.

Lots of ABs left though.

by orlandobruin on Jun 1, 2008 9:40 PM PDT reply actions

Nifty DP

Let’s get some runs!

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 9:44 PM PDT reply actions

Going to watch from my exercise bike

so I won’t be able to post for a bit.
Go Bruins!

by Give me a B... on Jun 1, 2008 9:46 PM PDT reply actions

Dolan!!

Too bad no one was on base. 5-2 on the HR.

Home Run Dolan

Bruins get back on the board

by bruinhoo on Jun 1, 2008 9:47 PM PDT reply actions

And CSUF

starts off with a single in the bottom of the 4th.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 9:55 PM PDT reply actions

Ugh

Ball falls in the middle of a triangle in right field, should have been caught.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 9:59 PM PDT reply actions

BB

Runners at the corners. Still 2 outs.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 10:02 PM PDT reply actions

UCLA gets out of it though

4-3 groundout.

To the 5th we go, UCLA down 6-2.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 10:08 PM PDT reply actions

Hmm

That CF has misplayed two XBHs this inning, I like it.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 10:19 PM PDT up reply actions

That's called

striking distance. Plenty of time.

by Menelaus on Jun 1, 2008 10:19 PM PDT reply actions

Oof

Close to a WP to score a run.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 10:19 PM PDT reply actions

4-6 bruins

BAbeneoux with the RBI, Rankin getting pulled

by bruinhoo on Jun 1, 2008 10:22 PM PDT reply actions

6-4

by uclafan11 on Jun 1, 2008 10:24 PM PDT reply actions

Another wild pitch

Fullerton has a runner on third with one out

by SuperBruinMan on Jun 1, 2008 10:35 PM PDT reply actions

Klein replacing Drummond

Klein’s first apperance in 2 months. 4-7 CSUF

by bruinhoo on Jun 1, 2008 10:36 PM PDT reply actions

Come on

Can any of our pitchers hold down this team for an inning or two? Every time we score soem runs they answer

by muircoach on Jun 1, 2008 10:36 PM PDT reply actions

That double play

was a hell of a play by Crawford to catch the throw and swipe the tag in one motion.

CSUF up 7-4 after 6.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 10:59 PM PDT reply actions

Home Run. 5-7 UCLA

IF only Carrithers had not just been picked off.

by bruinhoo on Jun 1, 2008 11:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Man

That pickoff was bad, you just knew the HR was coming too.

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 11:23 PM PDT reply actions

curious

I am not thinking negatively, as the Bruins look like they mount a rally here in the 8th, but if they should not win, who would get the start tomorrow?

by muircoach on Jun 1, 2008 11:29 PM PDT reply actions

Curtis steals second

Then Weisser grounds out to end the inning.

Heading into the bottom of the 8th.

by SuperBruinMan on Jun 1, 2008 11:32 PM PDT reply actions

Single to left by Colon

UCLA misplays the throw back into the infield runner on 2nd no out

by lil eg not cs on Jun 1, 2008 11:34 PM PDT reply actions

Should we really use up another pitcher in a situation like this?

by SuperBruinMan on Jun 1, 2008 11:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Yikes

Really poorly played game. Bad base running, poor defense, horrid control. =\

by Raisin on Jun 1, 2008 11:45 PM PDT reply actions

Mental mistakes have really hurt

Pop fly to right, falls untouched. Leads to a run. Guys getting picked off, cost another run and two precious outs.

Ouch

Bases loaded, no outs… not looking good.

by cabz on Jun 1, 2008 11:48 PM PDT reply actions

over building a rally but having fewer runs scored.

Track still is in the mix

I hate to be wet blanket, but give credit where credit is due to Bruin athletes. Nestor, you do an extraordinarily fabulous job with everything there and I have the utmost respect for your loyalties! But I just wanted to point out that the both the hard-working Bruin men and women tracksters are still gearing up for the NCAA championships with high hopes.

I realize that track fanatics are a special breed (I count myself among them) and it’s certainly not for everyone, but they do work has hard as any Bruin athlete and have contributed to dozens of our 103 NCAA titles. So when you say of our heroic, clutch baseballers On to Bru-104. And we have one more shot left for the 2007-08 season., I’m a bit disappointed. Let’s also acknowledge our Bruin Tracksters, who had some valiant efforts this past weekend at the West Regionals to qualify a couple dozen athletes for the NCAA championship meet in 10 days. The men are ranked #3 in the nation and the women are #7. Both are darkhorses for the title, but then again so was our men’s Golf team..

Easy money and faithless women, red-eye whiskey for the pain...
