The Lame Pettiness Of Neuheisel Haters
Here is a very good example of how Neu haters will operate this season. They are going to look for every opportunity to make something out of nothing.
From the blog Wizard Of Odds, which I guess is looking for anything to write about this long off season:
UCLA held an athletic fundraiser Saturday night and Slick Rick Neuheisel was in fine form.
Not only did the Bruin coach conduct the Alumni Band for one song, he played auctioneer when it came time for bids on a sideline pass to UCLA's game against rival USC on Dec. 6 at the Rose Bowl.
According to an account posted on Bruin Zone, the bidding wasn't going well, so Neuheisel got up and said, "OK, I'll let you call call the first play."
Bidding picked up and the pass went for $10,000. Later, Neuheisel muttered that, "Well, we may audible your call."
Neuheisel was only warming up. Next up was a package to the Bruins' game at Washington, where a rather hostile crowd is expected to greet the former Huskies coach on Nov. 15. The package includes travel on the team charter, lodging at the team hotel and a game ticket.
Neu haters in Washington did not waste any time in picking up this story non story .
I talked to a couple of people who attended that event. It was clear to them that Neheisel was making a joke, and everyone in the audience understood.
But the sense of humor probably got totally lost on these Neu haters who are looking for any excuse to advance that "Slick Rick" narrative. Totally lame.
Update: uclafan11 who was at the event says the wiz is full of it:
This shows how things can be totally misconstrued and blown out of proportion. 1st off, Rick did say the winner could call the first play, and then said “but we may call an audible” OUT LOUD to everyone. We all heard it and laughed and we were at least 3 tables away. Secondly, he could not have “whispered” to his coaches because he wasn’t sitting with any coaches! Oh well, These Neu haters aren’t going anywhere and will only get stronger as he starts winning, so hate on! GO BRUINS!!!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Lame Attempt
The accounts we’ve had of the event in question here on BN made it pretty clear that he was joking around. This is consistent both with his personality and with the mood of the event itself as shown on the YouTube clips. But don’t let the facts get in the way, morons.

That Wizard guy
He wasted no time to write about this. I looked around his blog which is supposed to be college football centric and didn’t see any mention of that LA Times/Dwyre post on BN which blew up all over the blogosphere. Somehow this guy totally missed that post.

Found it through ballhype
Saw that Dwyre post linked up on SI.com, Deadspin, the Big Lead, Rush the Court. I am sure there may be more if people look around.

Makes me laugh...at them
Pettiness is not very far from jealousy – both of which are really close to just being lame. Keep whining, loser

Not sure
I think wiz was using snark. Perhaps he was joking. But as street noted it still advances a narrative based on a trivial incident which is not what he represented (based on first hand accounts here). So the post from Wiz does come across as kind of petty and lame. Guess that’s what happens when college football specific blogs are looking for anything to come up with content during the long off season.
I am disappointed. I think Wiz runs a cool blog … but it will be interesting to see whether he stays on this kind of narrative wrt to Neuheisel.
