We Love (UC)LA: Lakers Open Thread (Game 4 v. Celtics)

Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers, Jun 12, 2008 6:00 PM PDT

Here we go. It’s time again for another Lakers/Bruins game thread.

Lakers got the much needed win the do-or-die game 3. Even according to the most passionate Laker fans, it wasn’t pretty, but at least the Lakers such as our own Jordan Farmar, got a "bit of their swagger back" on Tuesday night.

From my vantage point Lakers can even the series tonight if they do three things. First, they need to stay aggressive on offense by keep taking it to the rack without settling for jump shots. Second, they need to play hard nosed aggressive basketball without giving the Cs any room inside the paint (i.e. not giving up easy offensive rebounds). Three, keep their composure and poise when the situation gets tight (make their FTs and take smart shots – looking at you RadMan).

So pop open a cold one and settle in your couch:

Well the Big Fella will probably be court side tonight. But as for rest of us (in exile) a couch and a cold one will do.

Tip off set for 6 pm PST and as always you can track the scores online here.

You guys know the drill. Let’s get it done Lakers.

GO LAKER & GO BRUINS.

Here we go again...

I am looking for the Lakers to play well as a team for the first time in this series. We need more from Odom, Gasol and Fisher. LET’S GO LAKERS!!!

Great start again

Let’s keep up the aggressiveness!

by Nestor on Jun 12, 2008 6:13 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Right

That is the key – be agressive and get those layups to fall.

O.A.

by Ollie on Jun 12, 2008 6:24 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow

Not a foul in my opinion, but I’ll take it. Staying agressive…

the annoying thing about pierce

traveling on every possession, is that its not subtle, just accepted

by Ollie on Jun 12, 2008 6:31 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

He looks totally out of control, but no call.

Totally

If Ariza is hitting 3’s, The Lakers are in good shape!

by uclafan11 on Jun 12, 2008 6:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I get that...

My dog, Bruin, had surgery Tuesday and the sent him home with a yellow bandana and a purple ace bandage on his paw. I will be leaving that on until this series is over! :-)

Side note

Just read your favorite moments, OA – SAME AS MINE! I was at the Gonzaga miracle and it still stands as my favorite game ever attended in basketball. 13-9 as well as 1992 and 1996 football were the BEST. GO BRUINS!!!

I love our help D

on KG so far two, Kobe really darting back to lock him up…we just need to keep the energy level up…Ronny, trevor, all these guys have to keep us elevated

O.A.

by Ollie on Jun 12, 2008 6:57 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I didn't realize

that Kobe doesn’t have a field goal. I would have never believed this lead if you told me that stat…

there you go, you crafty ol vet

by MrGray on Jun 12, 2008 7:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

thats one reason

to like or dislike college basketball more than NBA…a lead is never safe, and 10 point lead changes are nothing…for overly stressed and emotional fans like myself, it keeps me in a constant state of discomfort lol

by Ollie on Jun 12, 2008 7:08 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Can't watch the game..

(too nervous)
but how is Farmar doing?
So good to see him have a semi-breakout series after the Western Conference matchups.

by EmmaWK on Jun 12, 2008 7:10 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Farmar hasn't done much

But Ariza made a huge early impact off the bench with lots of energy, hustle and 6 pts.

by Nestor on Jun 12, 2008 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

thanks dude

I saw a lot of “ARIZAAAAAAAA!!” type comments so I figured he has been playing well :)

by EmmaWK on Jun 12, 2008 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

FARMAR

hit a last second shot!!! They are seeing if it’s a 3… and it IS!!! SO DOPE!

YES

You should have watched the first half – no stress there! The best they have played all series. Not sure about the 2nd half but let’s hope!

by uclafan11 on Jun 12, 2008 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is such a huge game

So no lead is stress-free enough for me.
I know, I suck.

by EmmaWK on Jun 12, 2008 7:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know

I get it but man that was the most fun I have had watching a half of Laker basketball in a long time. You should TIVO and then you can go back and enjoy! :)

by uclafan11 on Jun 12, 2008 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They can't get sloppy

Like they did towards the end of second Q settling for jumshots here and there.

They need to come out smoking and attack the rim. They need to go right at KG.

by Nestor on Jun 12, 2008 7:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

btw

Thanks to writers on this site for alerting me to the fact that there are not one, but two $C players on the Celtics. Like I needed a reason to hate them more.

Go (UC)LA Lakers!

by EmmaWK on Jun 12, 2008 7:22 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

not like we needed any more reason, but the fact that we have 2 Bruins that actually PLAY and they have those 2 weasels on their team that have splinters in their butts is great!

That is unbelievable

well let’s hope we never draft anyone from the dark side. It will be like trying to root for Karl Malone an I just could not do it…

Don't like the defense

in first two possessions. 60-46 good guys.

Great possession

Loved that passing sequence from Kobe-Gasol-Fish!

UCLA Stanford

It was so great to see Jack at that game. I know we all remember how that went so I think Jack is GREAT mojo. He is welcome at Pauley anytime…

I have been looking for a picture of that shot

Would love to put that up for next game thread.

One of those games

where you wish the clock would run faster!

by uclafan11 on Jun 12, 2008 7:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

we have to take the initiative again

or its just a matter of time, during the regular season this team almost regularly went up big and couldnt hold the lead..

now obviously this is the NBA finals, but we need to get aggressive, play tough D, and thens step on the throat, we do not want them having any hope in the 4th quarter, lets go!

O.A.

by Ollie on Jun 12, 2008 7:59 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Now I'm nervous

The Lakers need to stay agressive and make another run to take control again. If the Celts come back from a lead like we had, that will be really damaging to their mindset… LET’S GO LAKERS!!!

WTH?

Why is RT taking jump shots?

I’m sorry but he is a baby.

by uclafan11 on Jun 12, 2008 8:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

maybe

the Lakers were trying to spot them some points so they don’t come into Game 5 mad.. but they overdid it.

....

So

this is how those Gonzaga fans must have felt like?

by Nestor on Jun 12, 2008 8:43 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe

Pierce should get into acting

by JWongUCLA on Jun 12, 2008 8:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow

I will just make the point I made above. I admire Phil Jackson. He is an amazing coach. But man … we are spoiled by Howland. I haven’t seen a team I root for fall apart like this on our home court.

God bless Howland.

by Nestor on Jun 12, 2008 8:47 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Right

I can see this happening on the road but not at home. I’m disgusted.

yep, agreed

everyone has reason to be shamed of themselves, the fans, the coaches, the players….everyone is responsible for this…I can’t take this, getting right there and gagging…thats just shameful

Paul Pierce again is a shameful human being, a disgrace, I feel terrible knowing he was born somewhere in the slum of this city, I just cant take that

O.A.

Expectations are a b*tch

If someone had told me before the start of this season that we would lose in the NBA Finals in 5 or 6, I would’ve taken it, no questions asked. I had much higher expectations for the Bruins this season.

It’s gonna be a long summer.

by EmmaWK on Jun 12, 2008 8:57 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i'm just so disgusted right now

blegh. this sentiment has been beaten into the ground, but: we need Bynum ASAP, because Gasol is NOT a center (i know, what good is it to say this now).

by deepdish on Jun 12, 2008 9:01 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm embarrassed for everyone wearing a Laker Jersey right now

theres no excuse EVER to give up that kind of lead on your home, in the finals, against your arch rival…this team deserves to run wind sprints in staples till the break of dawn, pathetic

O.A.

by Ollie on Jun 12, 2008 9:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I still can't believe it

I think I’m in shock. How does that happen, especially at home and in the NBA Finals?

by uclafan11 on Jun 12, 2008 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

young team?

Boston is good, too. Hate to say it but they are.

by EmmaWK on Jun 12, 2008 9:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously

They should just hand over the “Third Quarter Collapse” blog to the Lakers.

by EmmaWK on Jun 12, 2008 9:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even worse

Colin Cowherd on WWL radio this am was saying how the Lakers were done, even after winning game 3 because “everyone wins game 3 at home”. Stats say the team that wins the first 2 win something like 85% of 7 game series. When we were up 70-50 late 3rd, I was like “take that CC!” Sucks that he looks like a genius. Still a monumental collapse.

by Give me a B... on Jun 12, 2008 10:14 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

What the lakers need to do in the offseason

1) Cut Radmonovich- The guy doesn’t play defense and is confused offensively. He is another big bodied soft euro who wants to hit spot up threes when we need a guy his size to band, defend, and rebound.

2) Gasol needs to hit the weight room-He is not strong enough. This isn’t the Barcelona league and if you can’t establish yourself in the paint, you are not going to be successful.

3) Either decide you are going to establish Lamar each game, or trade him- He will never be aggressive if given the choice. YOu have tso structure the offense to make him aggressive. If you don’t, then you should trade him because he has no value as an inconsistant player.

4) Name one team without a dominating non-euro PF/C who has won the NBA championship….. Depending on Radmonovich and Gasol is disaster.

5) If Bynum comes back healthy and strong, the dynamic might change.

"when you've seen how big the world is, how can you make due with this?"
