2009 PF Brendan Lane commits to UCLA
Bumped. This is a blockbuster commit for Howland. Welcome to UCLA Brendan. GO BRUINS. -N
Jill Painter reports:
Brendan Lane, a power forward out of Rocklin High of Fresno, committed to UCLA today.
``I wanted to play at a big-time school with the chance to win a national championship and learn defense from a coach like Ben Howland,'' Lane told Tim Haddock.
Lane is listed at 6'9" and 200 lbs. Both Scout.com and Rivals.com rank him as the #20 power forward in the nation in the class of 2009. According to MaxPreps, Lane averaged 20.4 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 5.2 blocks per game this past season.
Found this on ESPN.com regarding Lane:
Lane is one of the fastest rising juniors in the country. He is a hybrid four-man with solid perimeter skills. He has a long frame, quick feet, and soft hands. He is quite bouncy and has the quickness to take defenders off the dribble as well. He has the ability to fill the lane on the break and can either finish with an array of athletic moves or pull up for the three-point shot. His jump shot is solid with a fairly decent release and it should get better as he gets stronger. Lane has solid inside-out skills. He has a nice drop-step and a very good touch around the basket; however, he does have a tendency to settle for too many three-point attempts. He is a good rebounder and his outlet pass is solid as well. Overall, as his body tones up he needs to become more comfortable playing in the paint area and continue to develop his perimeter skills. Has a chance to be a high major player one day.

I hadn’t heard that yet – sounds like a solid recruit. Welcome to the blue and gold, Brendan!

You beat me to it
I was about to put this up on a fanpost.
I think this is a great get for the Bruins. I’ve seen him play a few times when his team played against my cousin’s team and he can really play. He’s tough and hoes 100% all the time so he will fit in with Howland’s system well. He’s versatile and can shoot from the perimeter. He’s really plays like a small forward who can rebound like a 4. With his perimeter/slashing game and Reeves Nelson’s rugged game, I think they’ll compliment each other well.

not sure if we need...
someone who “hoes 100% of the time”. He might be low on energy for the games. LOL!!! :-)

Ah the joy of typos. Goes was what I meant if you didn’t pick up on it. The typo was better anyways.

With the talent CBH is bringing in...
...it’s no longer a question of if he’ll bring Banner 12 to Westwood, but when.
And I think that when is very soon (within the next 3 seasons). Can’t say how excited I am for Ben Ball news. Solid get for CBH. Imagine what he can turn this kid into with a few years of work (look at what he did with LRMAM and AA2, not to mention JF and AA).

What is amazing
Fresh off securing the number 1 class in 2008, Howland may be positioning us for yet another top-3/5 class for 09. He is off to an amazing start with Nelson and Lane. And he is just getting started as he has UCLA in the lead with few other elites such as Stover, Honecutt, Bradley, Snaer … Just awesome.

Well, would we would expect anything less of CBH?
Look at the kind of in-your-face intense defense our Ben Ball Warriors bring. Should we really be that surprised that CBH brings in the kinds of classes we’re getting now. This isn’t by accident; it’s all due to his hard recruiting work with the same kind of energy and intensity we see in guys like LMR, LRMAM, AA2, AA, RW, DC, KL, JF, etc.
I mean, the guy has already got a commit for 2010: Kendall Williams from Los Osos HS. No idea how this guy will pan out, but if CBH is sold on the kid, so am I (and it looks like CBH beat ol’ Viagra Lute to him too!)
Just cannot say enough about Howland, both as an X’s and O’s guy and as a tremendous recruiter. UCLA is lucky to have him.

Tremendous news
“Bouncy,” “quickness,” “very good touch,” “solid,” and, best of all, he wants to “learn defense from a coach like Ben Howland.”
I dunno. Should we take him?

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNDDDDD
The Rich get Richer.
HUGE get for the ‘09 class. Lane was one of Howland’s prime targets if you believe the rumors over the past couple months.

Great get
Guys in this range (10-75 best in the country) are likely to hang around for 2-3 years, make solid contributions, and become true Ben Ball warriors.
PF at 200 lbs he needs to bulk up a bit, but since he’s still only 17, I guess I’ll cut him a little slack ;-)
Go Bruins.

Viagra Lute
Sometime ago he mafe a comment about players would prefer his type of BB rather than CBH’s or something to that effect. His comment rings kind of hollow now doesn’t it??

Viagra Lute forgets...
...that guys prefer winning basketball. Lute’s run-and-gun is all flash and no substance. Sure, ‘Zona looked great, but let’s not forget that was during the years the Lizard was running our program into the ground. Not hard to pull in recruits without competition from Westwood.
Now that CBH has restored order to the universe, ‘Zona is back to where it rightfully belongs: as just another also-ran in the Pac-10. It’s a simple choice: go to the desert, run some flashy shit, and win nothing, or come to the most beautiful campus in the world, play fundamentally sound basketball and tough, in-your-face defense, win some hardware to put in Morgan Center, and punch your ticket to David Stern’s House O’ Fun.
On a side note, if anything, Viagra Lute has shown us he doesn’t know how to evaluate talent and potential. Our own DC would have been a Mildcat had Lute had him. Looks like DC showed him by becoming the floor general of the Pac-10 champs. Again.
(And truth be told, I expect DC to again be the floor general for the Pac-10 champs).
