Bruin Tracksters going for titles #104, 5

I hate to be a wet blanket, but give credit where credit is due to all hard-working Bruin athletes. Nestor, you do an extraordinarily fabulous job with everything here and I have the utmost respect for your loyalties! But I just wanted to point out that both the hard-working Bruin men and women tracksters are still gearing up for the NCAA championships with high hopes.

I realize that track fanatics are a special breed (I count myself among them) and it’s certainly not for everyone, but they do work as hard as any Bruin athlete and have contributed to over a dozen of our 103 NCAA titles. So when you say this about our baseballers, who I'm pulling for big time --  On to Bru-104. And we have one more shot left for the 2007-08 season  -- It makes me a bit disappointed, because they are not the only "shot" left for us.

The Bruin Nation, the Bruin Family and Bruinsnation.com also should be aware of and acknowledge our Bruin Tracksters, who put up some valiant efforts this past weekend at the West Regionals to qualify a couple dozen athletes for the NCAA championship meet in 10 days.

The Bruin men are ranked #3 in the nation and the women are #7. Both are darkhorses for the title, but then again so was our men’s Golf team....

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

oh please

Stop the whining dude.

In your last post on track you didn’t write anything about the track team going for number 104. I’d bet Nestor and co. were paying attention to baseball, softball, and even golf and tennis closely because number of posters were putting up content alerting the whole community that those communities were going for NCs.

If you care about track so much then you should have made that effort before.

As N and others have said number of times already, none of us are paying them to work for us. They are writing about what they want. And if they miss something then those who are interested should fill in the gaps.

Stop the bitching.

It makes you look whiny and ungrateful.

I frankly never cared much about our baseball program until I started reading ryebreadaz’s posts on BN. Instead of complaining about the frontpagers, rye stepped in and built up interest around the program with detailed and informed posts. He didn’t do it by whining and complaining. If you take that track, I bet lot more people will be interested in the program.

BN is not the LAT or DN

I know this should be obvious, based on the far superior quality of writing here, but BN is not the LA Times or the Daily News. You do not pay a subscription and, thus, you don’t have any right to whine or complain about lack of coverage.

Bluestreet is 110% correct. BN thrives because people contribute the content they are interested in. If you want to see more track coverage, then sit down and write it up. Being in exile (and by exile I mean the Bay Area, where the only time UCLA makes the news is after they give Stanfurd or Cal a beatdown), I’d love to read all about how our Bruin track stars are doing.

Less whine. More writing.

Chill bluestreet..

You say I’m whining, bitching and ungrateful. Where did that all come from? I said Nestor et al. are doing “an extraordinarily fabulous job with everything here” and that I have “utmost respect”.

I merely pointed out that the track teams deserve support of all Bruins and that we should not overlook them as they are still in the thick of an NCAA title run now.

I wish I had the time to give regular updates and recaps on the track teams, but I don’t. The info is available on the official site.

I also think seeing as we are all die-hard Bruins through thick and thin, there is no excuse for rude personal insults. We’re on the same side bro and we need to stick together.

Your post came across as someone

with a total sense of entitlement. It came across as ungrateful.

by bluestreet on Jun 2, 2008 8:19 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

oh

and if the info is available on the official site why don’t you direct people to the specific page with links like rye and daynuh do for baseball and softball?

Truce, everyone

Rich, you gotta realize that Nestor and the other managers do tons and tons of work for this site, and so BN will get pretty defensive if someone criticizes any of them. I think that’s where bluestreet and norcal are coming from.

At the same time, I didn’t take your post as whining so much, as it was someone putting in a voice for the track program.

That said, rich is right in that we are all on the same side here, and of course we will all be supporting our track program. Here is the link to the site for those who are interested.

I was “forced” to be a supporter of the track program when I was a student – my dorm room in Sproul overlooked Drake and I got to hear many of the track meets loud and clear on Saturday mornings, whether I was in any shape to hear them or not!! Go Bruins!!

I don’t think Rich was out of line at all. He was just propping the track teams.

Maybe a little less sensitivity around here would be a good idea…

Good call

I think most people only watch track during the Olympics, me among them, but I’ve been to a few events at UCLA….and wow. These men and women are unbelievable athletes. Watching the long-jump up close—jaw-dropping stuff.

You are welcome to keep us updated

I’m not sure the structure of the meet is conducive to an open thread format (I used to be a swimmer so I know how that goes), but we could always try it out and see how it goes. Believe me, it was not a slight on the track teams that they have not been mentioned. We simply have not seen as much interest or participation in it until this diary. I encourage you to keep it up. As bluestreet mentioned, many of us would be far less informed about the baseball team without rye, and the same goes for softball and daynuh and many others.

To bolster the comment..

..I used to be T&F junky and, in the immediate decade after my UCLA graduation, I used to hit all of the duals at Drake. It is an absolutely marvelous venue on a warm spring day and, with the less-than-frenetic pace of a meet (carnival atmosphere with stuff going on all the time), a sheer joyous way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

I posted a piece on Willie Banks’ clutch triple-jump to win the USC meet and Nestor was very gracious and encouraged me to continue to add to that. Alas, a hectic three months at work precluded my doing it the justice it deserves, but, if you are interested, your efforts would be greatly appreciated, I am sure. Perhaps your reportage will encourage me and others to add info and we can develop something approximating Rye’s absolutely marvelous Baseball coverage.

In the main, Rich, college T&F used to be largely about UCLA and USC. We have had a prodigious number of world and olympic record holders and performers in that sport and it does deserve attention.

You may or may not know, that this year, UCLA and Oregon re-established the long-moribund dual meet. Hopefully it will ignite a flurry of duals and triple-duals so that number crunchers like myself can revel in a sport where athletic effort translates into points.

I’m game if you are!

Re: T&F

Rich,

Thanks for the reminder about the T&F NCAA’s. I was wordering if we were still in the mix for additional NC’s before the end of the school year.

So when is the meet, and do you know who is broadcasting it?

NCAA's

I believe they are in 2 weeks, which might explain why some attention as been elsewhere in the interim.

Rich, a question

I have heard that the PA announcer for UCLA track is a fraternity brother of mine, Scott Davis. Next time you go, would you check on this? And if it is Scott (aka the Red Pig), tell him Fox said hello.

by Fox 71 on Jun 2, 2008 1:53 PM PDT   0 recs

Scott Davis...

I don’t know him personally, but he’s a GOD of the highest order in the track world. He’s got a full-on encyclopedic mind when it comes to track and he’s probably one of top three English-speaking track PA announcers in the world. Download any YouTube video of a UCLA meet or the Mt. Sac Relays or the NCAA finals or Olympic Trials and you’ll hear his voice over the PA system. He’s the friggin’ Chick Hearn of Track!

Thanks a million, Rich

It is certainly the Red Pig himself. (I didn’t think there would be any red hair left, so I didn’t explain the red part. I didn’t realize he was such a big cheese in the world of track and field (I was going to say in the track and field field, but that would get me nowhere.) I can really hear him making some of those announcements for Og Ogilvie, et al.

Thanks, Rich

I’ll be watching for our Bruins at the national meet. I love T & F, and my neice is quite a high jumper, so I really do watch and enjoy the “carnival!”

And Fox, do you just know everybody? ;)

Love My Bruins
