Quest For Bru-104: Do Or Die/Game 7 Baseball Open Thread

Here we go.

Bruins are taking on the Titans tonight at Goodwin Field (Fullerton’s home turf) in a decisive game seven starting at 8 pm PST.

The situation is simple. Bruins have to win if they want to stay alive and move on the Super Regionals.

The offense has been clicking this post season. Let’s hope they can put everything together with some clutch pitching and great defense:

The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU. If you don’t have ESPNU you can follow it via the official website by going here.

Not much else to say at this point except for PLAY BALL.

GO BRUINS.

I'm here at Goodwin Field

And it’s official, Rasmussen is getting the start.

Brian Wilson gets the nod for the Titans

He threw 111 pitches in his start Friday night, his first start of the year.

111?

You’d think that arm would be tired. Guess his manager should know.

mid 1st, 0-0

Bruins led off the game as the designated visiting team. Leadoff hitter reached 1st, next 3 recorded outs.

by bruinhoo on Jun 2, 2008 8:16 PM PDT reply actions

Lucked out here

UCLA pitchout – catcher overthrows the 2nd baseman, Tim Murphy (playing CF) gets the overthrown ball and throws out the CSUF runner attempting to take third base on the error. 2 down in the bottom of the 1st

Wish I could watch

Even if I were inclined, if last night’s game is any guide, the bar w/ESPNU would close/last call around the 5th inning.

I feel you...

these games are ending so late I can barely make work! :)

beauty

I hope to start focusing on this full on, as the Dodgers look to hold a comfortable 6-1 lead

I did not mention this yesterday

but why does the UCLA official already list the the NCAA Super Regionals under “Next Event”?

by truk on Jun 2, 2008 8:48 PM PDT reply actions

busy few minutes here

Elimination game in the NHL Finals (best pro postseason series, imo), UCLA baseball playing an elimination game, and this reading/homework bit.

by bruinhoo on Jun 2, 2008 9:00 PM PDT reply actions

Out

End of the inning. Thank god.

Fullerton up 2-0

by dproduct on Jun 2, 2008 9:05 PM PDT reply actions

I don't know about you guys

But I’m following on the audio feed, and the sound of an HR is so decidedly different for college. Just a small thing…

by Menelaus on Jun 2, 2008 9:11 PM PDT reply actions

Base hit.

Hit the center wall.

Runners on 3 and 1. No outs!

by dproduct on Jun 2, 2008 9:14 PM PDT reply actions

Excuse Me.

Runners on 2nds and 3rd.

by dproduct on Jun 2, 2008 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Haerther doubles

just shy of a HR. Runners on 2nd and 3rd, no outs in the 4th

by bruinhoo on Jun 2, 2008 9:14 PM PDT reply actions

Now 2nd and 3rd on a double off the wall

Runner had to hold to see if it would be caught, otherwise would have scored

by Give me a B... on Jun 2, 2008 9:15 PM PDT reply actions

Sac fly

Carrithers driven in by Babeneux’s sacrifice. tie game, 2 out

by bruinhoo on Jun 2, 2008 9:17 PM PDT reply actions

Sac fly

we’re tied up. Runner on 2nd held, tho

by Give me a B... on Jun 2, 2008 9:17 PM PDT reply actions

Inning over. Ground out up the middle

Now we need a stop

A zero. A blank frame. Please…

by Menelaus on Jun 2, 2008 9:22 PM PDT reply actions

Gotta have a quick hook

can’t let what happened last night happen again

by Give me a B... on Jun 2, 2008 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep

CSF knows how to capitalize

by Menelaus on Jun 2, 2008 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Another bunt

runner on third holds. Never seen a team bunt so much.

by Give me a B... on Jun 2, 2008 9:33 PM PDT reply actions

1 Out Now.

No one scored. Good defensive play the Bruins.

by dproduct on Jun 2, 2008 9:33 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah

My bad earlier; the radio announcer said one out before there was one. Should have paid the 10 bucks for ESPNU

by Menelaus on Jun 2, 2008 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Lined out to third

that was hit pretty well. Fortunate

by Give me a B... on Jun 2, 2008 9:37 PM PDT reply actions

HBP

don’t think Novak has it tonight

by Give me a B... on Jun 2, 2008 9:38 PM PDT reply actions

Hit him forcing the walk.

Runners on 2nd and 1st.

Novak, come on.

by dproduct on Jun 2, 2008 9:38 PM PDT reply actions

Whew

no further damage. Out of the inning.

by Give me a B... on Jun 2, 2008 9:42 PM PDT reply actions

Base Hit.

Wild Pitch. Dolan to 2nd!

by dproduct on Jun 2, 2008 9:46 PM PDT reply actions

Heh

We have 3 folks doing the play by play. I’ll cool it for an inning. :)

by Menelaus on Jun 2, 2008 9:48 PM PDT up reply actions

off topic, but in NHL news

Pittsburgh fights off stanley cup elimination in triple-OT. One of the best games I have ever seen.

by bruinhoo on Jun 2, 2008 9:52 PM PDT reply actions

Red Wings still up 3-2,

but the series goes back to Pittsburgh for game 6.

A Sudden death/elimination game in the cup finals is about as good as it gets, imo (disregarding UCLA/A’s/49ers playing for a title).

by bruinhoo on Jun 2, 2008 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Yahoo!

4-3 on a base hit

O.A.

by Ollie on Jun 2, 2008 9:52 PM PDT reply actions

Dunlap K's

2 down, Dean still on 2nd. Carrethers hitting.

by bruinhoo on Jun 2, 2008 9:58 PM PDT reply actions

well we got one back

still alot of game left, lets go boys

O.A.

by Ollie on Jun 2, 2008 10:01 PM PDT reply actions

bases loaded

2 outs…this could be the game on the line

O.A.

by Ollie on Jun 2, 2008 10:15 PM PDT reply actions

Ball 4.

Our pitching is falling apart.

5-3 off on one single…3 walks.

by dproduct on Jun 2, 2008 10:18 PM PDT reply actions

inning over

thats a real shame that we walked a run in

O.A.

by Ollie on Jun 2, 2008 10:20 PM PDT reply actions

What's frustrating

Is that we blew a good chance for a stop. CSF alway seems to strike back, and we need to break that cycle.

by Menelaus on Jun 2, 2008 10:21 PM PDT up reply actions

It seems to me that

our pitching is giving away much more than CSUF batters are taking for themselves.

by UCngLA on Jun 2, 2008 10:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Night air

It’s getting too cold for HR’s I suspect. It was like that on Sat.

by Menelaus on Jun 2, 2008 10:27 PM PDT reply actions

Inning over.

CSF 5-3.

3-2-1. Good defense from UCLA.

by dproduct on Jun 2, 2008 10:36 PM PDT reply actions

Personally

I’d just hit the ump with a pitch after that. What BS!

by Raisin on Jun 2, 2008 10:43 PM PDT reply actions

That ump

is awful. HBP, ball 4. Both taken away by the ump.

by Raisin on Jun 2, 2008 10:44 PM PDT reply actions

Got a strike out...

He got hit with the ball and ball 4 taken away from the ump.

by dproduct on Jun 2, 2008 10:44 PM PDT reply actions

Well

1-0 pitch hit him, ump decided batter leaned into (poor call, he was leaning away). Made him come back. He took a borderline 3-1 pitch and walked about 5-10 feet before being told it was strike 2. Struck out swinging on the next pitch. The HBP call was utter BS.

by Raisin on Jun 2, 2008 10:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep

And we’re running out of time to not be scoring with lead off doubles.

by Menelaus on Jun 2, 2008 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Another K.

One bad call changes it from 2 on base with no outs to two outs one on base.

by dproduct on Jun 2, 2008 10:49 PM PDT reply actions

I could never be a manager

I’d have totally lost it at the ump. Whether it’s an elimination game or not.

by Raisin on Jun 2, 2008 10:50 PM PDT reply actions

Nice

Single. 5-4; Curtis advances to 2nd

by Menelaus on Jun 2, 2008 10:52 PM PDT reply actions

RBI single by Curtis

Murphy scores. Curtis takes second on the throw.

by Raisin on Jun 2, 2008 10:52 PM PDT reply actions

Imagine what would be

if the ump didn’t blow that HBP call.

by Raisin on Jun 2, 2008 10:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Murphy scores

and then goes straight to the pen to warm up.

by Raisin on Jun 2, 2008 10:54 PM PDT reply actions

Inning over.

UCLA only down 1.

They made due with TERRIBLE calls.

by dproduct on Jun 2, 2008 10:56 PM PDT reply actions

Argh

Groundout, 3-1 to end the inning.

by Raisin on Jun 2, 2008 10:57 PM PDT reply actions

A welcome donut by CSF

They go out quietly in the bottom of the 7th; Bruins up in top 8th.

by Menelaus on Jun 2, 2008 11:06 PM PDT reply actions

CSF gets a good out.

Ends inning. 3 outs left to advance.

by dproduct on Jun 2, 2008 11:12 PM PDT reply actions

C'mon lets hold em

and get another 9th inning rally going

by Give me a B... on Jun 2, 2008 11:15 PM PDT reply actions

Stinks that it'll be 6-7-8

in the top of the 9th. Of course Murphy spearheaded the last Bruin rally. Just got to make sure they don’t score here. UCLA scored enough to win if CSUF didn’t score in the bottom of the 8th.

by Raisin on Jun 2, 2008 11:17 PM PDT reply actions

Meh

1-out walk. Come on, let’s nip this rally right here.

by Raisin on Jun 2, 2008 11:17 PM PDT reply actions

How did that ball travel that deep?

Looked like Murph would have to go in for the catch.

by Raisin on Jun 2, 2008 11:20 PM PDT reply actions

Put your rally caps on

I’ve went and grabbed my rally monkey, hoping his magic transfers over to a college baseball team.

by gilbert on Jun 2, 2008 11:20 PM PDT reply actions

2 outs.

Murphy on 3rd. Curtis come on baby!

by dproduct on Jun 2, 2008 11:28 PM PDT reply actions

OMG...

COME ON – He’s on 3rd. GET HIM HOME!!!

by uclafan11 on Jun 2, 2008 11:28 PM PDT reply actions

That Murphy kid is a MONSTER

Boy do I love the way that kid plays. Down to our last out man. We need a hits man. C’mon Jermaine.

by BruinFaithful on Jun 2, 2008 11:28 PM PDT reply actions

Ugh

Fly out to CF. Just can’t beat CSUF.

by Raisin on Jun 2, 2008 11:29 PM PDT reply actions

Great

The game-winner was that bases loaded walk. 12 straight balls was awful.

by Raisin on Jun 2, 2008 11:32 PM PDT reply actions

That sucks

The blown hbp really hurt. Most schools don’t have 3 NCs, much less 3 within a couple of months. It’s still great to be a Bruin.

by bruinchud on Jun 2, 2008 11:35 PM PDT reply actions

Great game

unfortunately we got the short end of the stick… a few pitching errors plus a few bogus calls (hbp, strikes) but couldn’t have asked more from the Bruins against a talented CSUF team in an elimination game. Gotta give it to our boys for a competative game and season! Go Bruins!

by mdcbruin on Jun 2, 2008 11:37 PM PDT reply actions

A disappointing season

there is no other way to put it. This team underachieved. They played solidly this weekend and showed they had the talent to play with one of the nation’s top teams, but errors, walks and mental mistakes killed them. I’ll have a season review later in the week and I’ll take a look at what to watch for in the offseason. What I do know now is Crawford and Murphy are both gone next season.

Thursday is the draft so you may want to check on how the Bruin recruits fare in the draft. Some names to keep an eye on: Gerrit Cole, Tyler Chatwood, Cutter Dykstra, Clark Murphy, Chris Amezquita and Tyler Rahmatulla.
