Even Lazy Hacks Agree: Temper Expectations in Westwood

Recently, certain corners of the interwebs tried (but failed) to call out BN for lowering expectations for CRN's first season at the helm in Westwood.

But, even the lazy "journalists" at the WWL agree with BN; as "journalist" Pat Forde says:

Rick Neuheisel won't bet on his own team in the office bowl pool.
The new UCLA coach got a mulligan and a bad lie at the same time. He's back in the game after being justifiably shunned for years, but inherits an offense that hasn't thrown for even 200 yards in a game since the fifth contest of 2007, then saw both its leading quarterbacks get hurt in spring ball. With only nine starters back and a nonconference schedule of Tennessee, BYU and Fresno State, the Bruins won't go bowling in '08.

Now, let's ignore both the tired-ass and played-out rip on Neuheisel for betting in a March Madness tournament (which BN has repeatedly taken to task time and time again) and his little jibe that CRN was "justifably shunned" (it appears Forde is just as lazy of a hack "journalist" as dickwads SMQ and Bill Plaschke).

The main point is that for as weak Forde's "article" is, even a WWL "reporter" can see that the Bruins have a major mountain to climb this season, going so far as to predict that our Bruins won't even make a bowl game.

Now, I won't go so far as to say I can't see us getting a bowl bid, but if we do get one, I don't expect it to be something that great.  I'll be happy if we even make the Lame-Ass Emerald Dick-Off Bowl.

Despite these expectations coming out from source after source, goobers like SMQ still want to whine and cry about our "conspiracy" and "hidden agenda."

Maybe he's the same Mr. Magoo running the "investigation" into OJ2 and Reggie over at that junior college across town.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Beauty of BN 2.0

It is great to see so many folks putting up posts and increasing their participation. Please keep it up. Hopefully this place will be clicking on all cylinders heading into the season opener. And it is also great to see new regulars in this community adding to what already was a great crew.

A request, Nestor

During the five year blight, it became necessary to refer over and over to the “List of 19 Reasons” why CTS had to go. It was difficult for me, with my limited skills with the machine, to find that efficiently.

Now it seems that we’re going to have to continually explain the “Great Office Pool Non-Scandal” endlessly. Is it possible to keep a permanent posting to things that destroy that myth maybe over on the left side of things? In fact, it would be appropriate to keep a list of ready references for the various issues that keep coming up. E.g., I don’t think I could find M’s list of trOJie thuggery.

Anyway, that’s my request – a list of the top ten research links. (I would gladly add a list of my favorite operas, but I don’t think that would get a lot of activity.)

Nozze di Figaro
Don Giovanni
Turandot
Madame Butterfly
and Adia?

My top 5…

Ahhh. A person of culture

First, an Andy Rooney moment. “Did ya ever think that if Mozart had called it ‘Figaro’s Wedding’ that it just wouldn’t be as classy?”

Second, you’re forgiven for misspelling Aida.

Third, that’s a good list. A company with that five scheduled would fill seats.

But my list would have to include Trovatore, Faust, Mikado (yes, I count it as opera), Don Pasquale (my one and only title role) and Boheme.

Thank you for indulging me on this, impaulv.

Sorry, it was like 1am in my time zone after spending the day in 120 degree weather… I know of your fondness for proper spelling and grammar, and unfortunately, I suck at both. But yes, your list is very good as well (with the possible exception of Boheme, not a fan). One thing that stinks about the Navy? All too often both my UCLA football and LA Opera season tickets go either unused or used by others…

Agreed

But now I realize that all season long, no matter how we do, we are going to be hearing about his past. A lot of very good work was done here debunking many of the “charges” with in depth analysis.

Fox, I agree, I don’t want to have to go backward and answer that crap any more. I’d love an easy way to say “read this” with one of those fancy hyperlinks.

We have to continue to cover CRN’s back because even though they are bogus, many of those charges keep coming back like the Everready bunny.

A start

I tried to compile at least a few of the relevant links in this post.

If anyone has the time, I’d appreciate them adding more links to this comment thread.

If I get enough support, I will take the laboring oar on a “list” on this topic.

Have at the “search” function brethren!

You Know,

I have been cautiously supportive about CRN all along, mainly due to the same “history” that these tired idiots keep throwing around as if it’s some terrorist’s rap sheet. I just fail to understand the logic of attacking him so viciously at this point in time, and then attacking Bruin fans for “keeping their eye on the ball,” so to speak.

If CRN does not improve our football team, and do so within the NCAA rules and regulations, he won’t be around very long at U.C.L.A. That’s how it works here. (Elsewhere, not so much.) We have his back because he is our coach, and we like what we’ve seen him do and heard him say so far. He’s been quite candid about everything, and he seems to bleed blue and gold, which is-in my opinion-a requirement for any U.C.L.A. coach. He has a plan, he’s surrounded himself with experienced professionals who know how to get the job done. He knows the game, he knows what kind of players he needs, and he’s not waiting for them to show up—he’s going out after them.

I am no expert, but even I know at least enough about college sports and athletes to know that no coach can “fix” a program instantly.

So, if we use our common sense and have realistic expectations of our new coach, we are part of a rabid conspiracy.
Good grief.

Another Thing About CRN

He seems to have his ego under control.

He has been extremely good at empowering NC and DW—sharing the stage and authority with them. He seems to be the type of boss we’d all like to have.

Interestingly enough, he was not a runaway first choice on BN—but as we’ve seen what he’s done, he’s earned a lot of respect and deference here.

83 is right. He will have to deliver and meet realistic goals. That’s what this latest windstorm has been about. I don’t think any of the people writing about our program have more wisdom than that shown by the collective of writers here. I trust our goals and projections more than I trust those of outsiders.

Another Another Thing About CRN

He’s won a lot of people over with his humility regarding his past actions and his ability to laugh at himself. As an example, CRN was on the Best Damn Sports Show. John Salley asked CRN if he could help with his NCAA pool. CRN, with a slight grin on his face, declined and said he won’t even swim in pools anymore. He had everyone on the show laughing.
