We Love (UC)LA: Lakers Open Thread (Game 2 v. Celtics)
Los Angeles Lakers at Boston Celtics, Jun 8, 2008 6:00 PM PDT
Going into game 2 Lakers are not in any kind of panic mode.
According to Big Fella the key for game 2 is to make sure the Lakers hold on their own around the rim, not give up easy offensive rebounds, and maintain their focus on offense. So with that in mind here is a little blast from past:

The tip off for game 2 is scheduled for 6 pm PST. It is on ABC and I am sure you can keep track online via WWL.
So let's get it started.
GO LAKERS & GO BRUINS.

Lakers off to a good start
Gasol comes out smoking. 15-12 good guys.

I was upset last game
I didn’t follow my own rule for NBA games. Always have beer handy.

Pac-10 refs
Looks like they are back again. Ticky tack foul on Kobe. 19-18 Lakeshow.
by Nestor on Jun 8, 2008 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is a terrible call
I honestly don’t know what they’re thinking. That’s not even close to being justifiable.
by Tydides on Jun 8, 2008 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
And that was the second one ...
The first one on him was a joke too.

No beer here,
have to settle for Mojitos.
But considering how hot the Mid-Atlantic has been the past few days (99 degrees, heat index of 105 today), a mojito sounds rather refreshing right now.
by bruinhoo on Jun 8, 2008 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
107 here w/ heat index
ridiculous … and no relief in next 2 days.

He is so confident
22-20 Lakers at the end of 1st q.

One thing you have to admire about Phil
is that his method of coaching can really instill confidence in his players. It’s no coincidence that Jackson coached teams hurt you with the usual suspects AND the unusual suspects..

5 bench players on the floor
Ariza for the first time this series is in (I think).
by Nestor on Jun 8, 2008 6:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wooooooooooooooooot
Jordan for threeeeeeeeeeee.
by Nestor on Jun 8, 2008 6:35 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
No consistancy at all
Kobe gets called for brushing Allen’s arm away, but Alien can rack Ariza’s arms and nothing.
This is a disgusting display of officiating.
by Tydides on Jun 8, 2008 6:41 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Well
Looks like refs are intent on making this series 2-0.
by Nestor on Jun 8, 2008 6:46 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
This is fucking bullshit....
just let the players play and let’s see who wins, not this ticky tack shit that decides it all.
by Nakatomi Plaza on Jun 8, 2008 6:50 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Uhmmm
Didn’t Kobe just get fouled there? Are you kidding me?
by Nestor on Jun 8, 2008 6:51 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Replay shows it was a good call
One of the few they’ve made tonight
by Tydides on Jun 8, 2008 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
We should have gotten our SECOND FT OF THE GAME
on that lob
by Tydides on Jun 8, 2008 6:57 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
This is unfuckingbelievable
Mug Gasol and no foul. They aren’t even trying to disguise their bullshit calls anymore.
by Tydides on Jun 8, 2008 7:09 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
You couldn't have fixed this game any better
It’s Dodger game time. At least when they’re down it’s not because they’re getting fucked by the officials.
by Tydides on Jun 8, 2008 7:17 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
This game is reminding me
Why I haven’t been watching as much NBA as I used to. What a freaking sham this is.
by Nestor on Jun 8, 2008 7:19 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, this is sad
Donaghee(?) is locked up, right?
by bruinhoo on Jun 8, 2008 7:18 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I'd say they have a couple more to weed out
Donaghy wasn’t blatant about it, which is how he got away with it all these years. These three assclowns on the floor are amateur game fixers.
by Tydides on Jun 8, 2008 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm embarassed to be watching this game
Lakers shoot one free throw in the first half as the result of a personal foul. (The other FT was b/c of the tech foul on Garnett.)
Celtics are outplaying LA, but still, this is ridiculous…..
by insomniacslounge on Jun 8, 2008 7:19 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
If the score was based purely on effort
I’d say the C’s would still be up by 3 or 4. This double digit lead is built on BS calls.

David Stern
giving the game to the Celtics

These half time annoucers/analysts
Total east coast homers clowns.
by Nestor on Jun 8, 2008 7:23 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I actually like the game crew of Breen, JVG, and Jackson
but that halftime analysis was a joke…
by insomniacslounge on Jun 8, 2008 7:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Can't stand JVG
He bugs me. Okay … I really got to log off now.
Have fun Insom. et al!
by Nestor on Jun 8, 2008 7:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Look at the discrepancy in the calls
That is not the final foul count, the Lakers did not have to start fouling at the end… When you see that, you know there is BS going down.

I will try what I do during late night Ben Ball threads
when things are little gloomy. I am gonna step out of this game thread for the night … and take it offline. See if the isolation play works. :)
Have fun guys. Here is to a better second half.

19 FTs to 2
And we’ve been going inside plenty so you can’t use the “aggressiveness” excuse to explain it away.
As I said, it’s time for the Dodger game.
by Tydides on Jun 8, 2008 7:28 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Dodger game isn't going much better
3-1 Chi in the 8th.
And Chan Ho Park is pitching so the deficit could certainly grow…
by insomniacslounge on Jun 8, 2008 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
But as I said earlier
When they’re losing, it’s not because they’re getting fucked over.
by Tydides on Jun 8, 2008 7:33 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, you would hope
that the Lakers get the same type of bullshit calls at home. The problem is that they don’t have 4 games at home. LA’s getting outplayed, but the refs are allowing such a discrepancy, it’s embarrassing…. not the way you want to start either…
by Nakatomi Plaza on Jun 8, 2008 7:38 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I guess staying out of the thread
Doesn’t change our fortunes
by Tydides on Jun 8, 2008 8:20 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Man
I just came home from a local bar. There were so many fair weather celt fans that came out of the woodwork I couldn’t take any more. I really hope we get all the home calls like they are getting – ridiculous.

Its definitely in the leagues best interest
for the series to go 7.
by Give me a B... on Jun 8, 2008 8:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Quite a run now
considering the refs have totally swallowed their whistles
by Give me a B... on Jun 8, 2008 8:43 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
so did I, where's the foul????? another terrible call
maybe I shouldn’t watch….
by Nakatomi Plaza on Jun 8, 2008 8:46 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Damn!
great come back, let ‘em off the hook

GIVE THE BALL TO KOBE!
Let Kobe, the best finisher in the game, have the ball in his hands every possession in the last minute
by lil eg not cs on Jun 8, 2008 8:52 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
That game left me feeling pretty sick to my stomach
I guess to my good fortune, i didnt see most of the first half because I was at the dodger game. From what i’ve heard the refereeing was absolutely atrocious so im glad I didn’t witness all of ti or there may be some broken glass in the bar at dodger stadium.
All in all disappointing though, dodger loss aside, I was considering tonight a must win for the lake show...im not sure if we can win three straight at home in the finals...but I know we'll need fair officiating if we hope to do it...i guess all we can do now is hope for the best.

It's the way the ball bounces...
If we all remember, all season long we picked ourselves off the floor and made the key shots. We could have lost 6 to 8 games and not gotten a #1 seed. But, in the Memphis game, the same clutch shots that seem to fall all year went in and out. There went our season, but we were there with only 3 others.
Lakers, remember SA blowing a 20 point lead, Utah coming up one shot short, SA missing a 3 and there was a foul, well these are the breaks that make a season. Boston won 9 more games than we did and beat us 2 out of 2, so what’s happening is not a fluke. The foul total was 28 to 21, so what happened is that we fouled when they were shooting and they fouled before the shot. Remember Boston was out of fouls with 7 minutes to go in the game and rather than drive to the bucket, we kept shooting outside, so no advantage. We’ve got 3 games at home, they held serve, so if things hold, we go back to Boston up 3-2. Leon Powe, Pac 10 guy from Cal, operations on both knees at Cal, touching special on ABC halftime, lost his mother during high school, a grinder, how can anyone not support this kid? I saw him play at Oakland Tech and it’s ghetto, so the background story makes sense.
