Football Recruiting: OL Stud, Greg Capella
It looks like RN has beefed up our 2009 recruiting class with a huge get in Greg Capella, an OL out of El Diamante H.S. Apparently he really impressed at the Nike Football Training camp on USC's campus. According to Bill Conley of ESPN:
The other offensive lineman who wouldn't be denied was Greg Capella (El Diamante, Calif.). He went repetition after repetition, getting tougher and tougher as the competition heated up.
Also according to WWL:
Capella is a huge and powerful offensive tackle that absolutely destroys anyone dumb enough to play base technique against him. He delivers a devastating initial punch and follows it with excellent leg drive. Capella has good feet for such a big man and can pull and turn upfield without losing balance or body control. He is also a solid pass protector that has a huge wing span that makes him difficult to beat on the outside edge if you're a pass rusher.
It's nice to see us get a solid OL to protect Brehaut, who continues to shine in all of these pre-season camps. I think RN knows in the recruiting game you have to start in the trenches and build outwards...who would want to quarterback a team with no offensive line? Concussion anyone? And who would want to play DB without a decent pass rushing/run stuffing defensive line? The skill positions follow the big boys!

On the recruiting front
Byron Moore decommited from UCLA and switched his commitment to USC. A tough loss considering he was a big, physical corner who could run, but he’s been a SC fan for a while so you figured he’d jump ship if USC offered him.

Moore
Yeah, that was disappointing.
To be honest, it’s also a tad depressing to compare UCLA and Southern Cal’s commit list at the moment. I am okay with our present progress, but had hoped for a touch faster start. I’m hardly a recruitnik, and find it less interesting than most, but from my 10,000 foot vantage point, it looks like the Trojies have worked hard to correct the problem from last year when KD beat them to several recruits early.
Petey
has historically been very tight with offering early because they want to evaluate the prospect before offering. However, he got caught with his pants down last year when KD & staff received early verbals from recruits before Petey had a chance to offer or evaluate them. Petey has made a conscious effort to combat this by offering kids early this year. In addition, Petey took advantage of CRN having to take time to focus on retaining the class, building a coaching staff, etc. in locking up a lot of recruits thus far. Some of them (Burfict) would never get into UCLA but they secured some kids that UCLA would pursue.
I think we’ll end up with a class that’ll make the Top 25. We’re in on some really good players but a lot of them have SC as well. If we can get our fair share against SC, we should be fine. The kids will come once they see a competent staff developing a team and program on the rise.
He might come to regret that decision...
...when NC schemes up ways to burn him and his trOJan secondary buddies.
I suspect to hear something like this in the very near future:
“Brehaut drops back, throws . . . .and hits Nelson Rosario at the 25, the 20, the 15, 10, 5, touchdown Bruins!”
