Bumped. GO BRUINS. -N
The UCLA basketball program has released their tentative 2008-2009 schedule. The schedule features 29 regular season games with two more possible should UCLA advance to the semi-final round of the 2K Sports Classic. One of the regular season games' opponent is still to be determined, as is one of the two exhibition games. The Bruins face off with Texas as part of the Pac 10/Big XII Hardwood Series, host Notre Dame the week of the USC game and take on DePaul in the John R. Wooden Classic. The other teams participating in the 2K Classic have not been announced, however Duke and Michigan will join UCLA in the tournament. The fourth team has yet to be decided, but Mississippi State, Southern Illinois and Nebraska are possibilities.

Looks a lot like 2007-08
We have a 4-game tourney that should provide 2 quality opponents. We have Texas. We have a mid-major in the Wooden Classic, and a bunch of games that only Lavin could have lost. I do like the addition of Notre Dame within the conference season. I always thought that was a great game to schedule.
I still would like to see a second major opponent during the conference season like we had in the old days (lest we forget, in the one year when we won the NCAA title since Wooden retired, we actually had THREE nonconference games after the conference schedule began (Louisville, Notre Dame and Duke), and I think that helped us prepare for the tourney.
I also would like to see a slightly better preseason schedule.
Then again, I have difficulty questioning anything that our coach does, given the results he has produced.

A little surprising
CBH had been loathe to schedule a nonconf game during $C week as had been done in the past. My guess is he did it because he got a home game and because its ND. He doesn’t like cross country travel that late in the season, as it is tough on the players academically.

It's mostly the home game
I would assume the return game would be for a different time the year after.

Non-Con Sched
I’m liking this non-conference schedule better than year’s past. Seems like we won’t be playing any middle-of-nowhere Directional State schools. I really like how we’ll be playing Depaul (a mid-major in a major conference) in the Wooden Classic, though arguably the Davidson matchup was more interesting/intriguing though we didn’t realize it at the time.
The CSUN game should add local interest, and we’ll be playing Mercer (who the Toejams lost to at home last year) and Wyoming (VEGAS BOWL REVENGE!) too.
BUT WHY OH WHY IS THE TEXAS GAME ON A WEEKDAY?!? I WAS PLANNING TO GO OUT THERE AND SPEND A WEEKEND IN AUSTIN WITH MY ROOMIE WHO’S GOING TO GRAD SCHOOL THERE IN THE FALL! Guess I’ll have to wait till we play them in football…
Any chance we could get a big name school (or notable mid-major) to fill that December 17th date?

2K classic schedule
While not at all in UCLA’s control, why does the MSG round of the coaches v. cancer tourney have to be thursday/friday? Make it a friday/saturday or sat/sun, and I could probably make it up, if the Bruins were to advance.

I might be going out to NY for the 2K Classic
I have a few friends in NY so I’ve got a place to sleep. If I can get a somewhat decent plane ticket I’ll probably make the trek.

The life of a student
A place to sleep is least of my worries; I estimate that 1.38 metric sh!t-tons of my law school friends live/will be living in NYC by November, and there is hourly Amtrak service from here to MSG’s basement (aka: Penn station). Finding an understanding boss htat would let me take a day and a half off to go, slightly more of a challenge,

"Finding an understanding boss"
You are about to become an FBU—a “fungible billing unit.” An understanding boss wants his FBU’s to generate about 2500 billable hours a year. (Don’t listen when they tell you “We’re only looking for 1800 to 1900 because we don’t want you to burn out.” Doing 1800 to 1900 will tell them which FBU is on the short list to go.) Anyway, make a deal with the boss that you’ll do your 60 hours that week even with a day and a half off. You have a long train ride – take something to work on and dictate.
Parable – I had a time for a while when I commuted from LA to KC every weekend (thanks to a pass on the dearly departed TWA.) I left work every Friday at about 11:00, but I still had the most billable hours month in and month out because I dictated the entire flight up and back.
In fact, if you keep the billables up even though you’re not physically present, that might be another thing that distinguishes you from the other FBU’s.
(The term FBU is not demeaning, it’s just factual. Once you retire or semi-retire and become an opera chorister, you go from being a Fungible Billing Unit to what an opera chorister is—a Meat Puppet.)
