Pac-10 picks
By Brian Dohn on July 15, 2008 9:00 AM |

Pacific-10 media day is fast approaching, so preseason poll ballots are being gathered. Here is mine:

1. USC
2. Arizona State
3. California
4. Oregon
5. Oregon State
6. Washington
7. UCLA
8. Washington State
9. Arizona
10. Stanford

Fooled Dohn, too.

Guess BN has seduced Dohn, as well.

But it’s interesting seeing UCLA picked everywhere from 4th to 9th in the Pac-10 for this year. What that says to me is that there are lots of question marks about our team. There is no consensus that we will be good (as is a reasonable prediction with the 2 JC’s at the top) or terrible (Stanford). So any complaints that we are overly optimistic or overly pessimistic are just randomly based opinions (to which everyone is entitled to voice, but for which no unassailable argument can be made).

I have no idea what our final record will be this year, (my worthless random opinion is 6 wins). But I do know that I am hopeful about football again. I am excited about the potential for this program. I think some of the pieces for growth (excellent coaching, good recruiters, some top-flite commits) are already in place. I think there is a buzz and enthusiasm among UCLA fans. All these are things I haven’t seen or felt for a while.

We’ve talked before about the difference between hope and expectation. We’ve had high expectations before, and even fairly recently. But those expectations were, for me, always tempered by fear of the possibility (probablility?) of underachievement. In other words, I didn’t have much hope. But now, for the first time in a long while, I have real genuine hope that UCLA football is going the right way – and that reasonable expectations of excellence can soon follow.

We agree on several points ...

As I’ve written here before, I think we have a load of question marks. So many, it almost renders predictions impossible. But, there are too many for all the answers to break our way and that really tempers my ability to get overly enthused about this team’s real win/loss potential.

But, I’m also excited about the program and for the same reasons your are hopeful.

Put a gun to my head (or ask me to respond to a BN poll) and I also predicted 6 wins. I think that’s reasonable.

Agreed

I’m not very enthusiastic about the win/loss potential this year either – sorry if I didn’t make that clear.

But I’m pretty fired up about the win/loss record in 3 years, and on after that.

You were clear ...

I was just agreeing.

The improvement this year will likely be incremental.

If we finish .500, it won’t be because we ran the ball into the line on first and second down, then tried to complete a third and long … all day long. It won’t be because the plays are too slow coming in from the sideline and it won’t be because we punted on 4thand 1 on the opponents 42. It might be because we’ve got a tough schedule—with huge ?s at QB and OLine.

We should be way more fun to watch, even if the record isn’t what we’d like to eventually see.

Third and long...

You forgot to mention that when we’d face that third and seven, we’d always run a five-yard route.

After year 3

gbruin, you just gave me a bad potential visual of the future, after year 3. In this “bad visual” scenario, Neu goes 6-6, 8-5, and 8-5. Then Dorrell lovers dig themselves up from the grave and proclaim that UCLA should not have gotten rid of Dorrell, that he was unfairly fired, etc., as KD was 22-15 in his first 3 years and Neu was only 21-16.

I don't think there are as many question marks about this team

as there are about the whole conference. I think the reason we see the Bruins ranked anywhere from 4-9 is not as much because of our unpredictability, but because seemingly everyone in the conference is unpredictable. USC and Arizona St. seem to be the class of the conference this year. After that though, it’s anyone’s guess.

We have an injury prone QB and no offensively line. Oregon is replacing a QB that was leading the Heisman race before getting injured. Once injured the Ducks struggled mightily and their best RB is gone too. Cal only returns 5 starters on offense, lost their best playmaker and hasn’t had a QB step up and take the job. Oregon St. had a poor offense and won games with defense last season, but only 3 of those defensive starters are back and they still don’t have a competent QB. Washington has a coach on the hot seat after going 2-7 in conference play last year. They’re overly reliant on a QB who’s only a sophomore and their defense that was horrendous last year doesn’t look like it’ll be much better this year. Head down to Tucson and you have a consistently underachieving program with a coach on the hot seat. They finished under .500 last season and return only 3 defensive starters. Stanford is definitely on the upswing, but they’re a few years away while Washingston St. is in a situation similar to ours with a new coach and not an abundance of talent.

Fact is the Pac 10 is going to be down this season and is nearly impossible to predict. For all of our question marks, 8 other teams in our conference have nearly as many or more.

Excellent points, Rye

And they may provide more reason to be optimistic about the future – thinking that we have a better chance for getting turned around than these other schools with lesser locations, lesser coaches, etc. Would you rather be UCLA or UW or UofA right now? But this year is anyone’s guess.

Do you believe Dohn??

When he is gone, nothing is written and I write off the Daily News. When he returns, he says things that make you wonder. We don’t need a blind supporter, but read his Q&A’s and you should get the feeling that he is always pissed off about something. As to his rankings, I agree with Rye. Everybody but SC has issues. Now compare coaching, recruiting and quality of returnees. We may struggle a bit, but a tough schedule may make it easier against Oregon, Oregon State, WSU, UW and Cal. But 7th, I don’t see it. We’re not going to be 10-2, but 7 to 8 is very possible with the down year in the Pac 10. A down year that is never mentioned at the Daily News.

7 to 8 wins?

I would like for you to tell us which games you think we will win then, and explain why you think we will win. I basically find it difficult to see us winning that many games when we have very little continuity in terms of players AND coaching. The only team in the same boat as we are is Wazzu, every other team has either more returning players or a returning core of coaches.

If you expect us to go undefeated with 20 returning seniors and returning coaches, you can’t possibly expect us to win 8 games with 5 (?) returning seniors and new coaches, even if the coaches are better. I want to be optimistic but not unrealistic. I would be thrilled with any bowl game this year (6 wins), but frankly I only see 4 games that I really think we should win.

Well-let's see...

Who can’t we beat:
1. SC
2. BYU
3. Tenn
Who most likely will we lose to:
4. Fresno State
5. Arizona State
Who can we beat:
1. Cal
2. Stanford
3. Oregon
4. Oregon State
5. Washington
6. WSU
7. Arizona

Shake it up and only the top 3 are pretty sure losses. Everything else depends on the bounce of the ball. I will place a lot of emphasis on coaching and game plan. If they teach the kids and motivate them, we stand a chance. You can look at recruiting over the past 5 years and you can’t tell me that the 7 possibles have better players. Think about it, how many games a year are decided by a play or 2. I think CRN and NC will make better calls than KD and his staff. If either of us can predict exactly what will happen in October and November, we’re in the wrong business. That’s why they play the game. Check out the 7 on 7, we’re not that bad.

Go Bruins!!!

I'll bite...a little bit

I agree with you that our new coaches will make better in-game calls, but I would not discount the fact that we are playing at Cal, at Oregon and at Washington. I would put the UW game as a toss-up, but that is a very difficult place to play. It’s a tough year ahead, no doubt. Of course, we won’t know until they play, and even after the first couple of games we probably still won’t know how this team will end up at the end of the season. It will be exciting for sure though!

It will be a tough year...

Tasser10: The road games will be tough and come December, we’ll all know where we stand. Let’s be confident and believe that CRN and his staff will put a solid product on the field, win or lose. I’ll tell you from my own eyes, they stunk in spring and look 200% better now (7 on 7). There’s a long ways from being there but at least they’re heading north not south.

Go Bruins!!!

I don't put much weight on practice...

I know you have to look good in practice before you can play well, but I heard that line way too many times during CTS’s tenure, especially when it comes to 7 on 7. I will wait to see what gets put out on the field, but again, while I don’t expect miracles, I do expect to see a much different team that plays with poise and purpose.
