Wish me luck.

Hello all. Those of you long standing members who post here daily may remember that I have stated my desire/goal to write and direct films. For those of you that are new or don't remember, I am a UCLA School of Film and TV grad.

I would like to announce that I have just completed a script for which I will endeavor to find financing and get it made. This script has taken me approximately 3 years, 4 drafts and well over 500 pages to get to the point where I feel good enough about it that I will send it out to Agents, Producers, and Creative Executives. Seems like a long time, I know. Writing is not easy between full time work, at one point over the course of 1.5 years I worked two jobs, while trying to maintain a relationship with a beautiful woman. Somehow I squeezed in time to write, by refusing to give up.

Reading that post about 66's precognitive abilities reminded me that I do have an extended family that I can call upon to send out positive vibes on my behalf. That being said, if anybody has friends or associates within the film making community, I would love to contact them if you are willing to put in a kind word as introduction.

To that end, I will post my email address here for contact purposes. Please only send emails if you have contact to share or you are yourself in the business in a position to help.

Thanks in advance for all the warm wishes and fuzzy feelings you are about to send my way.

Go Bruins! Go Large!

I just wanted to add

That I will spend the day at print shops, getting my script printed and properly bound; followed by stops with two agents, one producer, one creative exec and one Sony exec not in creative.

Best of luck MB

I know it is a brutal business.

Writing's tough

but good luck to you. Let us know how the process goes.

by ryebreadraz on Jul 7, 2008 10:47 AM PDT   0 recs

best of luck but...

personally i do not feel this is appropriate for BN. everyone has personal and/or job-related information they are looking to publicize, myself included, but it seems like using BN for this purpose waters down what is done here.

by jjreicher on Jul 7, 2008 1:28 PM PDT   0 recs

Perhaps, but...

...maybe this is something BN should look to incorporate into BN on the side; maybe an open thread for this kind of discussion, with a link on the right hand column or something.

Granted, BN is a Bruin sports oriented blog, but most, if not all, of us here are Bruins, either current students or alums. Those goobers across town like to talk about how “you’re a member of the trOJan family for life.” Personally, I see no reason why the Bruin family shouldn’t be promoting this kind of in-family networking.

UCLA is an amazing institution and the people who graduate are very talented and go out in the world to do a great number of amazing things, in every field, professional, etc. No reason not to tap into that to help one another out.

Again, I agree it seems a bit out of place on a sports-oriented blog, but maybe it’s something BN could develop on the side.

Just a thought.

Disclaimer

Considering, I’ve personally benefited from this kind of non-sports related discussion (66 and Fox’s excellent advice for those of suffering through our BarBri summer), in the interest of fairness, I’ll put that out there.

by norcald503 on Jul 7, 2008 1:37 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I disagree in this context, JJ

It’s not like Mexibruin just showed up and this is his first post. He’s a member of the family, and is entitled to make himself vulnerable like this to his family. And who knows, maybe some long lost cousin can help him, and to me, that’s one of the things that’s good about Bruins in general and about the BN in particular.

by Fox 71 on Jul 7, 2008 2:53 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Please Just Take A Look At This...

Read through “The Clairvoyant 66” posts, okay? (I’m Sorry, for some stupid reason-pilot error, I’m sure-I cannot get it to link.) I think this is mainly a sports-related blog, but it’s a community, too.

MB is not asking anyone to invest in a real estate scheme. Through his own determination and hard work, he has accomplished something terrific, and he’s jumping into the next step with both feet. If any of us can open a door for him, that’s great. If not, well, we can still send him good vibe just like we would for any other BN’er.

At least, that’s what I think.

a different section i'd be fine with

it’s just that i saw what happened to facebook and i don’t want it to happen here (small connecting service for college students became myspace2 with loads of mass junk mail). no knock on mexi, just trying to keep it focused on the community rather than the individual.

and actually now that you guys mention it, it would actually be pretty cool to have a section for this type of stuff.

by jjreicher on Jul 7, 2008 7:19 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

JJ

I agree with what folks have already said in this thread. The reason why this place has received traction in recent years because there is a real live community driving it. We are all friends with each other while we are tied together in our Bruin roots. And in this case we especially didn’t have a problem with MB’s post because he is not just a lurker or casual reader, but he is an active member of this little world. And I for one am interested in the cool things often going on in the lives of people who make this a fun place to follow while living and breathing blue and gold.

I do think norcal’s idea about perhaps an open thread is a good idea. If this section of the blog – FanPosts – gets really hopping during the regular season (and it just may), we might consider throwing up open threads every other night, where folks will be able to post whatever is on their mind as long as it comports with our standard community guidelines.

But we will not create a whole separate section for this. BN has been working fine the way we have had it set up last 3+ years and it will continue to be fine.

GO BRUINS.

by Nestor on Jul 7, 2008 7:35 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think an open thread would fit...

...especially given the ease of use with BN 2.0. It’s pretty easy to locate old posts, so for example, if in a few months, people are amping up for the February bar (let’s hope none of us taking it in a few weeks are among that group), they shouldn’t have too much trouble finding the recent discussion Fox and 66 have had re: bar/writing advice.

On a somewhat-unrelated note, JJ, Facebook isn’t that bad. It’s definitely nowhere close to as bad as MySpace; at least Facebook keeps the ability to change the way pages appear limited so it doesn’t take forever to load (although some people have the propensity to add every application imaginable). Anyway, my point: you can disable receiving those app. invites BTW, if it’s becoming a problem for you like it was for me a bit ago. Don’t remember how exactly I did it, but I recall the info was readily available on Facebook. Just thought I’d pass along some info.

by norcald503 on Jul 7, 2008 8:44 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

personally I never considered it a sports only blog

It’s a community of Bruins. It’s a group of people I consider extended family. Who better to go to share good news? I want to point out that nobody else seems to mind. Personally, I would prefer you keep your negativity to yourself. If you don’t approve, don’t comment.

We've had posts about weddings here

Congratulatory posts about the birth of kids, posts about kids growing up, and of course, posts about bar exams. This is primarily a sports blog, but history shows that it is far from the only thing we talk about.

by Tydides on Jul 7, 2008 3:11 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Overstated?

I assume your comment is directed at jjreicher, and not some other post that has since been deleted. I think JJ has a perfectly reasonable viewpoint, namely, that this is primarily a sports blog. I would say that there is a large difference between asking for advice within the context of a conversation within a thread, and writing a new post that very directly asks for favors with contact information and everything.

On my part, I agree with the above responses defending your post on the basis that you have been a member of and a contributor to bruinsnation.com. However, claiming that your post was merely to “share good news” is a bit disingenuous, and asking JJ not to post his viewpoint reveals a undercurrent of entitlement. I think you’re better than that, and I’m probably over-analyzing a quick internet post.

In either case, congratulations on the completion of your script! I don’t have any connections in the film industry worth “writing home to mom about” (as one of my professors always says) so I can only wish you the best of luck.

by dokein on Jul 7, 2008 11:07 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

have to agree...

jj had a point and he has a right to let it be known in this bruin “family”. he wasn’t being a prick about it. imagine if every member started making personal posts. dont get me wrong, i think its fine you posted but i can definitely see the other viewpoint and respect it as well.

Story content...

As long as it is not about 3 wealthy and influential alumni I have no problem with your request.

As someone who loves to read and has wiritten a couple of short stories (nothing published, more of a hobby) I wish you the best of luck.

by artybruin on Jul 7, 2008 3:40 PM PDT   0 recs

BEST of Luck!!

And, congratulations on stcking with it and seeing it through. (That’s the Bruin work ethic again, I swear.)

Godspeed

I have quoted your signature Wooden statement “A coach is someone…” on quite a few occasions, and if you are able to inspire my thinking via a blog, I can only imagine how well you will do once in person. Go get them tiger.

by eubruin on Jul 7, 2008 8:31 PM PDT   0 recs

So, MB, does this mean...

...that when your script is out of production and ready for theatrical release, that all of us here at BN will get to come to the premiere (and can you make that happen at the Fox; I always look for excuses to go to return to LA and visit Westwood) with food, drinks, red carpet, etc.? :)

by norcald503 on Jul 7, 2008 8:50 PM PDT   0 recs

Best of luck MB

Along with norcald, we will be waiting for our red carpet tickets. ;)

by freesia39 on Jul 7, 2008 9:59 PM PDT   0 recs

Best of luck

You are getting into a very difficult business, hopefully someone here can lend a hand. I look forward to hearing more from you regarding your venture and how things have progressed, hopefully all positive news.

by Rhapsode on Jul 8, 2008 12:29 AM PDT   0 recs

I actually do have an industry connection

A lifelong friend, whom I actually need to re-connect with (haven’t spoken to him in a couple months). He is a script reader for one of the major studios and actually sold a script a few years back. Unfortunately a So. Central film school grad. He’s worked at all the major studios at one time or another in different capacities, so he has connections. He could maybe give you some pointers. I know getting a quality agent signed on is definitely key. I’ll email you later today.

Dear 66

How about a post on how Spielberg needs Mexibruin?

Actually MB, one of my old gang and still best Bruin friends is a location manager and owns his own company. Don’t know how much that might or might not help, but I’ll forward this link to him. Good luck to you! Any hints as to the premise of the script?

by gbruin on Jul 8, 2008 1:23 AM PDT   0 recs

Actually, I got a peek at the script

It starts with this old guy’s last word before he dies, and enigmatic “Rosebud.” Then it follows his career as a newspaper publisher. It really sounds good and the title is great – “Gone With The Wind.”

by Fox 71 on Jul 8, 2008 9:14 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Thanks Everybody!

In answer to a few of the questions posed above.

My second comment was directed at JJ, dokein. And certainly he is entitled to his opinion, I just to keep the energy positive. And I assure you my point in posting was to share the good news and not to ask favors. Inserting the plug was an after thought.

Norcal, Freesia and everybody else is invited to the premiere! Of course! Since it came up, why host in Westwood, when I could make a go at reserving MacGowan Theater on Campus?

I appreciate it Give me a B. Every door that opens increases the chances that it is the door that leads somewhere.

And finally sneak peak time. “Cap’n Jack and The Peanut” could best be described as ‘an Officer and a Gentlemen’ if the Drill Sergeant got the girl. it will be compared to ‘Boyz N the Hood’ because it is set in the inner city. It is the story of a kid coming of age and discarding some childish views. It is the story of a woman learning to trust again. Finally it is the story of a man outliving his past and reaching sublime vindication.
