Not too concerned

Losing Moore and Pollard (to U$C and ND, respectively) does hurt a bit, but I don’t think this will have a huge impact. CRN still has a lot of time to put together the class of 2009, and given the depth and quality of the secondary guys we brought in (see below), I don’t think this will hurt us long-term.

This year, coming in, we have:
Rahim Moore, S (5 stars, #2 by Scouts)
E.J. Woods, S (4 stars, #9 by Scouts)
Anthony Dye, CB (4 stars, #9 by Scouts)
Aaron Hester, CB (4 stars, #19 by Scouts)
Sean Westgate, S/LB (3 stars, #83 by Scouts)

And don’t forget that Ware is only a RS JR and Viney is a RS FR, so we should have enough talent to cover the back once this year’s freshmen and Viney get some experience.

Both Moore and Pollard would have been sitting behind these guys, especially if they pan out as expected. This year’s class should provide the starting secondary for us next season (09-10) and the one after (10-11). Plenty of time for CRN and DW to bring in more guys.

I’d be concerned for next year’s class if we lost OL recruits or didn’t land a solid QB. All-in-all, it hurts a bit, but shouldn’t be a significant setback. I hope Pollard does well at ND (unless he’s playing us). Can’t wish Moore well, because, no way I’ll ever hope the enemy does well.

Good stuff

I will put up a post on this tomorrow am as well. Norcal … you have been posting at a magical level dude. We sure hope we are not keeping you away too much from BarBri.

BN is the only thing keeping me sane

My life basically consists of: sleeping, waking up, showering, going to BarBri lecture/studying all morning, eating lunch, studying all afternoon, dinner, and studying in the evening.

Since I’m stuck inside all day, every day, posting on BN is about the only thing that gives me some semblance of sanity during this oh-so-fun summer. It’s the perfect study break activity: I get to walk away from studying for a few minutes, think about something else, then return to the grind refreshed and able to refocus.

Looking into the future

I forgot to mention that in addition to Ware (RS JR) and Viney (RS FR), we also have Glenn Love, a RS FR S in the mix as well (I would mention ATV is a JR, but I suspect everyone here knows, and loves, ATV already).

I project this year’s starting secondary, even without the fab freshmen coming in, to look something like this:

CB1: ATV (JR)
FS: Aaron Ware (RS JR)
SS: Bret Lockett (SR)
CB2: Michael Norris (RS SR)

Bear in mind we still have Love as a backup S and Viney as a backup CB. All-in-all, next season we’ll have 11 guys in the secondary, not counting the couple of non-scholarship/walk-on guys. Next season (09-10), if ATV doesn’t jump to the No Fun League, our secondary would look like:

CB1: ATV (SR)
FS: Ware (RS SR)
SS: Moore/Woods (RS FR or SO) or Love (RS SO)
CB2: Viney (RS SO) or Dye/Hester (RS FR or SO)

Which would leave us with Westgate (RS FR or SO) on the side, in addition to the two so far in the ‘09 recruiting class: Alex Mascarenas, CB (3 stars, #38 by Scouts) and Sheldon Price, CB (3 stars, #33 by Scouts). All-in-all, 09-10 will have 11 guys in the secondary, plus whatever walk-on/non-scholarship guys we have.

Even assuming that CRN and DW don’t bring in any other secondary help in the 09 class, our 10-11 secondary would look like (only losing ATV and Ware to graduation):

CB1: Viney (RS JR)
FS: Love (RS JR), Moore/Woods (RS SO or JR)
SS: Moore/Woods
CB2: Dye/Hester (RS SO or JR)

We’d still have Westgate (RS SO or JR), Mascarenas (RS FR or SO), Price (RS FR or SO) as cover. Again, we’d have 9 guys in the secondary.

Now, given how highly touted Moore and Woods are, I don’t see where Byron Moore really would have fit in. Sure, it’d be nice to have him, but looking into the future, I can see why the guy wouldn’t want to stick around. It would have been nice to have Pollard in addition to Mascarenas and Price, but given CRN and DW’s ability to recruit, I’m none too concerned about it.

You obviously ...

have our depth chart down norcal … I think it will be very helpful for others … if you combine your comments in this thread and put in a separate post.

I was thinking the same thing

I understand the need to stack our secondary since that is one of our weakest units this season, but we have a solid cadre of freshman coming in at those positions. Plus, the 2009 class still has Price and Mascarenas at the CB position. I was hoping to see us get some OL/DL verbals. Our recruiting over the last two years has included a number of secondary and LB recruits, which is I wondered why our first commits this year were for exactly those two units.

It still sucks to lose recruits, but it looks like our secondary will be in good shape over the next few years.
