Michael Phelps & A Question Re. UCLA's Swimming Program
Michael Phelps is absolutely amazing. Michigan fans are understandably beaming with Woliverine pride. The question I still have is why don't we have a men's swim team. I understand that cuts were made due to Title IX. But why can't the Morgan Center do some fund raising and bring back this program. We have our own olympic tradition when it comes to men's swimming. We have our own heroes in Tom Jager. Why can't we bring this program back so that we can cheer for more Tom Jagers in upcoming olympics?

Title IX is the biggest reason
and I remember hearing somewhere that when they were pairing down the men’s sports they decided to cut swimming because they didn’t have the facility that matched others in the country. They figured they would keep a program like soccer or tennis because they had better facilities. With the Spieker Aquatic Center under construction and set to be open this fall I hope they consider adding it.

title ix also cost us...
a great men’s gymnastics program. the men’s national team coach used to coach the men’s team, both our assistant coaches are ucla alumni and competed internationally for usa gymnastics, with chris waller just missing a medal in barcelona on pommel horse. i’m sure we had other great men gymnasts come through ucla and you can’t forget the two national titles they won.

Think about how many national championships
we would have if we could fund all these sports!
