UCLA-USC rivalry Overrated according to Ivan Maisel...
The USC-UCLA rivalry is the most overrated in college football. There is a rivalry. There is some emotion. There is some dislike.
Quoted from Mr. Maisel's book and posted on espn.com
Ivan Maisel who just wrote all about Rick Neuheisel, attacks our rivalry between our beloved Bruins and the SuCsters across town.
His main arguement:
The lifeblood of a college rivalry is the identity that alumni and fans invest in their school. It is oxygen. It is all there is. UCLA may have lost eight of the last nine to USC by an average of 21 points, but the typical Bruin doesn't feel a sliver of the angst that has taken up residence in the gut of every Alabama fan. The Crimson Tide faithful awaken every day knowing that they have to go into the office and face Auburn fans who will let them know -- every day -- that the Tigers have won six straight Iron Bowls. The laidback attitude of most Californians makes for a lukewarm rivalry between USC and UCLA.
OF COURSE WE HAVE ANGST.
What about all that outcry, the dump dorrell?
When people in the street walk by with opposing colors, what person does not call them out or use their bragging rights from the numerous sports each year the two schools duke it out in.
I completely disagree with him....thoughts anyone?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Mixed thoughts on Maisel
Maisel is a decent writer. He can write decent reporters but like many others in the MSM he often doesn’t bother digging a little deeper. For example in the profile piece I blogged on the main page, he referenced the Seattle Times articles without any critical reference as to how they might have been total hit jobs.
As for this take on the rivalry, he is probably trying to get a rise out of folks and drive traffic to his piece. I read it and frankly was kind of bored by it.
I don’t think UCLA alums/students here on BN or in the greater community have anything to prove when it comes showing our devotion and passion for our school. The way we have stuck by our team through the lean years and kind of passion we have shown in taking initiatives in asserting ourselves in the conversations concerning the state of our program, speak for themselves.
Sure our Bruin culture will never be the one in Tuscaloosa or in other SEC program. But what we have is pretty damn special. And it will only get better when our time comes and we take care of the business left unfinished in the 80s and 90s.
GO BRUINS.

campus noise
his argument, and the argument in general is pointless and stupid. it’s impossible to compare rivalries. you go out to UMich and ALL THEY EVER TALK ABOUT is football. that’s it. everybody. that’s true of even more schools out in nowhereland. if you walk through LA, you won’t often hear about football. so if you go by that, it looks like we’re not the greatest of fans, and it’s not the greatest of rivalries.
all i can tell you for certain is this—i hate the trojans. i hate them so much. i hope they lose every game in every sport. when they win, i can’t sleep. when we got blown out during the 10-2 year, i lost my voice for a week screaming so loud, even down by 30+. when we won 13-9…it’s a feeling of a elation i can’t put into words. so i dunno how to compare rivalries, but i do know that even setting foot on that campus makes me nauseated.

It's not his fault
He doesn’t understand. He can’t understand. He’s a blind man trying to explain the Mona Lisa. He’s deaf and he’s trying to describe Mozart. I don’t blame him. He’s just not equipped to comment on this point.
Another perspective. I am aware of the rivalry between Auburn and Alabama. I think it’s kind of cute the way the people on each side get worked up, but it’s not really a significant rivalry for me. Neither school is the concentrated cesspool of rank filth like justsc is. But I suspect I am not the right person to try to describe the rivalry between those two schools.

That's a pretty dumb argument
Apparently the rivalry isn’t fierce because all Californians are laid back. You’d think he would have to go on than a lame generalization.

there is some truth to his arguement
We at UCLA don’t take it as hard when we lose in football, because we have academic dominance and dominance in every other sport. We are the greatest public university in the world. We are a powerhouse in basketball, the other major college sport as well.
Being well rounded means you don’t lose your identity in football. We care, we strive for the same type of excellence in football we do in every sport and endeavor. But its not the only thing that defines the University. So, we don’t dwell on a loss for 12 months and become wining bitches with nothing else to do. We move on to the next challenge and redouble our efforts.
If you are SUC, or Alabama, if you don’t have football, what do you have? You have nothing.
So, Yeah, I hate losing to USC in football, but when we do, I realize we are better then them at everything else, so I move on and wait for next year, knowing CRN is going to bring things back to their right order.
My hatred for the Trojans is much bigger then the football game. Losing in football sucks, but winning in everything else is a much bigger prize.

Ex. Act. Ly!!
I hate those idiots. And losing anything to them kills.
But I love being a Bruin more than I hate $cjc. I can get over a loss, because I’m still a Bruin the next day.
If that makes the rivalry weak, then Ivan doesn’t get it.

At least he's not relying on some ridiculous stereotype
The laidback attitude of most Californians makes for a lukewarm rivalry between USC and UCLA.
I don’t think Maisel has actually been on either campus prior to a UCLA v. Southern Cal game or even attended one of the games himself.

Mr. Maisel Is Simply Wrong
He completely misinterprets the word “rivalry” to mean a single, simple mindset. It is more varied and complex than that, of course. Alabama and Auburn fans do not have some kind of monopoly on college rivalry. They simply act out in a most regional style. Mr. Maisel is mistaking culture and class for ambivalence, and lack of manners and immaturity for passion.
I find this comment quite disturbing: “But L.A. college fans don’t have the same allegiance to these two schools that college fans around the country have.” That statement is beyond idiotic. He should come and spend some time here with me in Kansas City, and see what “allegiance” looks like when it thrives in a foreign land. He should go visit BruinInDenver, Fox, freesia….
Mr. Maisel has not actually done his homework. (Imagine that.) Staying in LA for a few months and wandering around is not “research.”

PLEASE!!!
06…middle of the game…BOTh FULL TEAMS ARE ON THE FIELD…JUMPING AROUND…GETTING HYPED..It was an amazing sight I’ve never seen at Bucks V Michigan or any other famed rivalry. Its all about perspective. I think it was relaxed before, but there is a definite resurgence in the rivalry.

I tell ya what…maybe the football interest has slipped…but the overall rivalry is un touchable. Name me any other rivalry that exsists in EVERY SINGLE sport? Be it volleyball, tennis, hoops, baseball….UCLA and usc contests are the most intense.
Ohio St. and Michigan in basketball is blah…Florida St. and Miami in volleybal? ZZZZZZZZZZZ.
Maybe Army-Navy comes close…but as “great” as all the alledged rivalries go…UCLA & So. Cal. is the best…and we have to share the same city with them.

Like so many other MSM types
He never felt this way when we were dominating South Central. Its like it never happened.
If anything, ours is a unique rivalry unlike any other in the country. UNC – Duke is played out on the hard court. Alabama – Auburn is played out on the gridiron. Not only are we the only major Div 1 schools to share a major city, ours played out across a spectrum of sports and industries. We own Basketball, they own Football. Since the inception of the Gauntlet competition we have traded wins for overall sports competition. I remember that while in film school, an agent I interned with told me that UCLA produces writers and USC produces directors. I know our law school is better than theirs.. But from what I hear their school of architecture is pretty good.
Maisel simply does not understand what he is talking about and reduces his argument to the lowest common denominator which in this country is football (but, if you were to compare us in the sport the rest of the world calls football, we own them in that too.)

Who care what the rest of the country thinks?
The rest of the country pays more attention to USC – Notre Dame
I pay more attention to Auburn – Florida or Auburn – LSU than the Iron Bowl. Does that mean Auburn – Alabama isn’t a rivalry?

If by 'overrated'
Maisel means that we don’t take the rivalry so seriously that we beat each other up and the rivalry doesn’t boil over to the point where showing up in an Oklahoma bar with a Texas shirt means the guy with a Texas shirt is going to lose his testicles, then yeah, I guess the rivalry is ‘overrated’.
But that sure is a stupid way to measure the rivalry. I’m also sure Maisel doesn’t get the nature of the rivalry – to a certain extent, it needs to be a bit more ‘friendly’, since we have to deal with Southern Cal graduates every. single. day. in So Cal. There’s not another rivalry like that in collegiate sport. That’s what makes it great.

If he's speaking specifically as a football rivalry
then he’s probably right. UCLA and USC is so much more than just a football rivalry. When you’re talking about other rivalries it’s 364 days (or 365 this year) of buildup to one game and that one day defines the rivalry. With UCLA and USC it’s football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, water polo, tennis, education, jobs. One day doesn’t define the rivalry like it does most rivalries. If that makes it overrated as a football rivalry fine, but I like our 365 day a year rivalry far more.
