So we will have a transfer starting at quaterback for UCLA in a nationally televised game on WWL. Once again here is a little blast from the past on another UCLA transfer (walkon) QB who made a name for himself during his nationally televised appearance on - you guessed it - WWL. Long live John Barnes. 12 more days. GO BRUINS.

Barnes' QB coach
I was just noticing the good shot of the QB coach there at 9:30.
I’m looking forward to that old coach bringing a lot of moments like that back to Pasadena.
12 days, 17 hours, 12 minutes…!!!

Wow
I’ve heard the name John Barnes dropped before. I’ve heard of this game before, usually listed among great games in the rivalry. I did not know anything about his humble beginnings as a walk on, or the monumental single game performance.
This is beautiful. I am SO ready for the season to begin. Bring ’em on. Bring ’em all on.

We have to do something about this
I just dropped in on Wikipedia to read up on John Barnes and I find he has no entry! There are four listings under ‘Sportsmen’ but not one of them refers to our guy.
Somebody with a good knowledge of his past present and future should do something about this.
ahem Morgan Center? ahem

Bill Plaschke Story on John Barnes
Every once in a while, LA Times sports columnist Bill Plaschke crafts a great story, and this is one of them. It tells of the heroic and unlikely rise of John Barnes from obscurity to Bruin glory, written on the 10 year anniversary of that 1992 game. Enjoy: Glory Days

I've seen countless videos of Barnes
and I still struggle to comprehend how he was successful. He wasn’t very big. He wasn’t fast. His arm wasn’t anything special. Take a look at the guy and he’s not a D-1 quarterback let alone UCLA’s starter, but he was the definition of a QB who has “it.”

Remember that game well....
an odd evening game, especially for a rivalry game. If I remember that year correctly neither team warranted an afternoon (east coast) start.
My dad has the same jacket that the coaching staff wore during that game. The only problem is that he still wears it to games.

Stokes was amazing
What a stud. Ketchum is out with mono, out of commission for a month at least. Is Rosario red shirting, anyone know? Those guys are 6-5, big targets like Stokes was.

Rosario is playing
I think someone mentioned the nice catches he’s been having at practice.

Best Game Ever
I still get goose bumps watching this. It was so completely surreal. It was the first UCLA-U$C game that I ever attended, and it was the best one ever. I hope this whole year can be a John Barnes year for Neuheisel. And hey…do you think he had anything to do with John’s performance that day? A little fate, a little Neu, and a lot of guts. I can’t get enough of this game…in fact, I have the Daily Bruin clipping in my photo album!

More likely the final!
Actually, I went to my uncle’s to watch the game…he and his brother played soccer for U$C…and they had some of their other classmates there…and me. Me and 5 TrOJans…that was fun!

Alway good to watch Trojies eat a little humble pie
I remember watching the ’86 game at a bar in Redondo. In walked OJ1, AD, and various of their hanger-ons, talking a lot of typical BS. Well, suffice it to say we kicked their tails that day and the big mouths left in the third quarter—but not before leading their minions in a chorus of “Good-bye Tollner.”
