USA Today Profiles CRN
Another great national profile on CRN. This time its on USA Today. The piece is pretty much along the line of recent pieces we have read by Maisel (WWL) and Witz (NYT). This one includes comments from Susan Neuheisel re the difficult experiences in Colorado (and Washington):
Looking back at Colorado, Neuheisel and his wife, Susan, remember not only the confident coach he seemed, but also a very young man desperate to live up to the job he had been given.
"Sometimes when you try too hard, you stumble," said Susan, who married Neuheisel in 1991. "From what I witnessed from the sideline, it was never intended to circumvent the rules. We work in a competitive business and that includes recruiting. I think some areas got pushed too far."
Neuheisel said he was "too loose."
"I was so focused on trying to rise to the top — not me, personally, but the team — that I wasn't paying attention to the details, like how many miles a recruit was driving from his home to the airport. I kept thinking other people would take care of that.
"You don't have to have this paranoia that exists in our profession that somebody else is out there getting this. Basically, that's where my head was when I was 33. I was trying to look for the loophole. In law school, you always are searching for an angle," said Neuheisel, who has a law degree from USC. "I was looking for that stuff.
"But as I said to (AD Guerrero) in my interview, I'm at a point in my life where I know I can do this job. I don't have to take shortcuts. I might lose a recruit that I might have gotten years ago, but that recruit won't help me win games if that's what I would have needed to do to get him, or build the kind of program I want to build."

Great article
Petros Papadakis recounted a story about Neuheisel’s first game against then Nebraska head coach and current living legend Tom Osbourne. Colorado had just scored a TD in the first quarter, and now was setting up a 2-point try. This rankled Osbourne, who was caught totally off-guard and had to burn a timeout. When play resumed, Colorado kicked the extra point. It was a big “F-you, Rick Neuheisel has arrived” moment. I hope to see alot more of those this season!
