Ben Olson HURT!!!
Olson hurt
By Brian Dohn on August 9, 2008 7:30 PM | Permalink | Comments (4) | ShareThis
UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel said quarterback Ben Olson re-injured his surgically-repaired foot during a non-contact drill midway through practice. Olson is undergoing x-rays, and could have an MRI on Sunday.
Neuheisel said it was on the same play Olson broke the fifth metatarsal in his foot in the spring.
The extent of the injury is not yet known, but Olson was carted off the field.
Kevin Craft took the snaps with the first team, and Kevin Prince and Chris Foricer had second-team reps. In fact, Forcier looked sharp late in the practice and continued to get snaps.
HORRIBLE NEWS.

i've said over and over
and over and over and over again. this guy cannot stay on the field. some guys are like that. not their fault, just the way it is. and you can’t be consistent if the qb can’t stay on the field.
bottom line: we need to put someone else in the #1 slot. craft would be fine. a frosh might be better, as it’s a rebuilding year anyways and experience is a good thing.

im with JJ
this is ridiculous, I feel bad for the guy but still with the state of our O-line, Olson’s gunna be taking a lot of shots, if he cant last in non-contact drills, this isnt going to work.

I have stayed out of the QB discussion until now
Once again – and this is getting sort of weird – I agree with jj. Ben may be the greatest guy on earth and all that, but he has gotten hurt twice without contact. How can he be expected to be a long term QB, and build rapport and continuity and all that? I think we have to tell Ben that we want him to use his leadership and charisma and his unique skill set to give us the perfect backup QB, and then find out which of our other guys is going to be first string. What’s the point of giving Ben all the reps if he’s just going to be leaning on crutches on the sideline after halftime against Tennessee?

A Time to Chill
I trust the coaches to put our best QB on the field.
There is no reason, today, to decide what should happen on Sept 1 and every game thereafter. Relegating BO to a bench role or inspiration because of this latest injury is premature and inappropriate.
Wow, last year he was SPJ, and had people worshipping at his feet and now, because of those feet, people are ready to put him out to pasture.
I never liked the label “SPJ”. But, I do like BO. He is a Bruin Warrior and, perhaps, the biggest victim of the CTS era. Suffering behind an offensive line that could not protect him and a total lack of any indication that the coaches knew how to use his talents, he’s stayed positive and has given us his best.
If he’s physically able to play and the coaches continue to believe he’s our best QB, he should play. From what I’ve been reading here, it seems that he was clearly the coaches’ #1 choice and that it is questionable whether we have a #2 at BO’s level.
“Preventive benching” makes no sense to me.
Until he can get back on the field, others will play with the first string. When he is able to play, if he’s the best we have, he should step back to the front of the cue.

PS. That said, I am concerned for BO. IIRC, it was a similar set of injuries that hounded Bill Walton and ultimately led to the end of his career.
BO, we wish you a speedy recovery and a great season.

Well said
It is really disgusting to see some of the comments here where people instead of being concerned about BO’s health are engaging in “I told you so”s.

I Agree
We should all be more concerned about Ben’s health rather than his position on Sept.1. Along with Nestor and Class of 66 comments, these coaches are more than capable of making the right decisions. Get better Big Ben.

Wishing the best
I bet everyone really does have Ben Olson’s health foremost in mind, and maybe some are just jumping ahead to address the impact on the depth chart. I don’t think (at least, I hope) that anyone is hating so much as they are just frustrated. We’ve all been hoping BO would develop to his potential, but the injury bug has been really unkind to him. And I’ll bet no one is as frustrated as he is.
So now we’ll just start over with him again, wait for him to get healthy (hopefully sooner rather than later), and then leave the football decisions in the capable hands of CRN and OCNC. Get well soon, Ben!

Silver Lining
First, I would like to echo the sentiments of N and others to wish BO a speedy recovery…I would love nothing more than to see him get a “W” before the year is up. Olson has a great arm, but by all reports he’s also a solid individual.
Second, there is a silver lining to all of this. The timing works out so that we can give KC and C-Force some snaps with the first string before Tennessee. If this had happened during that game or even a few days before, you could have just put us out to pasture (not pessimism, realism). I know that KC is still developing, but I think he has the talent to lead this team and be competitive in the near future. Although he needs to get rid of the “jitters” when he is in the pocket.
Go Bruins.
