PB Unleashed: Tennessee Open Thread
Tennessee Volunteers at UCLA Bruins, Sep 1, 2008 5:00 PM PDT
We have waited to put up this post for months.
I think we have said just about everything that can be said about this game. We have discussed as much as can about the kind of emotions and feelings of anticipation we have been going through to watch this ...

Rutgers looks terrible as FSU looking to nail down the final coffin. Big East/ACC looks horrible out of the gate in 08-09.
No Matter What
I am so proud of what this team is becoming. I’m sitting here in my “got one hundred?” T-shirt with my singing key chain, looking out on Puget Sound and getting just a glimpse of “the Mountain,” I have my wine, fresh oysters…
(Life is good here, too.)
Thank you so much, Nestor, Menelaus, rye,Tele, Achilles, jlegs…and all the rest of you who know so much more about this sport than I do. Reading your posts has really helped me feel ready to watch this game.
LET’S GO!!!!

Out Here
checking in on my elderly parents, taking care of some stuff for them. (They just happen to live in paradise, on beachfront property that’s been in my mom’s family for about 110 years.) Sometimes, the really simple stuff in life just works out really beautifully.
OH, PLEASE…LET’S GO!!
Love My Bruins
Me Too!
I’ve got my singing keychain too!!!
I’ve also got a picture of my dad in the seat next to me —
This is my good luck mojo.
I am so glad to be able to share these games with all of my Bruin brothers and sisters. I miss going to the games and sitting with people I sat with for many hears.
But, being here gives me the same sense of community. Thanks to all who make this possible.
Go Bruins!!! I am so amped up — Geezer Amped!!!

Waited 5 years for this
First time since Dorrell was HC that I’m feeling truly excited about a game.
Waited 5 years for this
meant to say since Dorrell was named HC
Stuck in the middle of the Indian Ocean...
on a Navy deployment… Got up at 3am (local time) to watch the game, but we’re on exactly the wrong course for TV reception. Poop.
At least I can still follow on the internets!
GO BRUINS!
Ouch
Sorry to hear you can’t watch, but thank you for your service.
While I normally would save this for December, I’ll throw it out early:
GO ARMY! BEAT NAVY!
:)
HAHA
I went to “real” school (aka UCLA) and not the Naval Academy, so that last comment doesn’t hurt me very much :-P
Still, I have to point out that Army hasn’t beat Navy in what? 5 years?
Haha
My brother is at West Point, so the Black Knights are now my second team now. Yeah, they aren’t good, but those games sure are fun to watch. And it’s kind of nice to know that the kids on both sides of the ball are genuinely good people.
Wish we could say the same of our rivals. But hey, the trOJans are keeping all of our fine law enforcement officers in SoCal occupied and employed, so I guess that’s something.
Very true...
I think current mids aren’t allowed to chant the “GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY” by the current Superintendent of the USNA.. something about it being divisive.
But the games are always really really classy
That's weak
Those young men and women are at USMA and USNA (and for that matter, USAFA) for a reason: they’re bright, articulate, good people dedicated to serving. They know that while there are divisions on the field, off the field, in the face of the enemy, the only team that counts is USA.
Silly rule to impose on kids who already know better. Oh well, it’ll be a good game still. Looking forward to it.
For now, GO BRUINS!
Thank You!!
Hang in, these guys will keep it up-to-the-minute live and accurate—they are THE BEST.
Love My Bruins
A bit disappointed...
…to turn it to WWL to see the College Gameday crew with a mostly empty Rose Bowl in the background, only 30 minutes or so from kickoff. I know school isn’t back in session, but hearing Rocky Top in the Rose Bowl, is, well, pissing me off.
But, hopefully, in an hour or so, those orange-clad fans will be dead silent and the Rose Bowl will be rocking and roaring on our Bruins.
GO BRUINS!
My kid just asked me ...
who we don’t have from last year and I said “Ben Olson.”
and he said …
“So what, Ben Olson sucks.”
He’s 12.
Go Bruins
I know the feeling
Took my 10 year old nephew to a game last year and sometime during the 3rd quarter he turns and says “you guys REALLY need a new coach”… he plays pee-wee (or whatever it is) football…
Well..
No offense to Big Ben at all, but just “SO WHAT?” might be a really good mantra for this team.

Gray here too
Gray UCLA sweater at least :-)
I had my guys put on an extra AC plant online so I could have an excuse to wear it…
something to look out for right away
- our D line against their running attack
- whether we can get generate some pressure on JC
- how many yards we are getting on first downs
Hmm
I think if I were Fulmer, I’d try to demoralize us early by running the ball down the throats of our DL – the strength of our team and try wearing us out.
Yes,
they did. At Katie Downs on Saturday evening, the Husky faithful were absolutely fuming.

Are you talking about the Metallica song?
Metallica – Wherever I May Roam
I know they were playing it at one point but I’m not sure if it’s the song you’re talking about…

I know the feeling
Last year, Mr.BB’s sister had season tickets. We went the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I wasn’t too happy, but I saw them running out onto the field and I thought to myself, “I can’t stay mad at you guys.” Of course, I wasn’t mad at them.

Wow
We’re moving the ball. Haven’t seen an offense move like this in a long time. Oh, wait, yeah I did. They were guys wearing ketchup and mustard and coached by Norm Chow.

What I really love so far...
…aside from that well-timed blitz, is that when a penalty flag is thrown, you don’t have to assume it’s on us.
Love how CRN has shaped this team up.
LOL!
When I heard there was a flag, my natural reaction was, “Oh shit!”

Ditto!!!
How many great plays did we lose last year to penalties? Ugh!!!
Little things like this will make a big difference this year.
Last year we had to continually climb out of holes we dug for ourselves.
My favorite? Delay of game penalties because our coaches couldn’t get a play in.
sjh
Yep
Let’s see if we can convert this time… now that the jitters are out, hopefully we won’t have any more mis-communications on offense.

No penalties for us in the quarter.

Remember when...
…UCLA was a big ass joke in both basketball and football? When no one respected us?
CBH came and restored order to the universe.
And, even if we don’t win this game, you can bet Fulmer and his Vols have a lot more respect for our Bruins than they did an hour ago. Pretty soon, CRN is going to have the whole country respecting our Bruins.
Joke no more.
Their QB is getting hammered by the D...
over and over again.
Until the touchdown sent them right back on the field
Our D was on the field the same amont of time
sjh
Okay,
I stepped away to frost my (famous) chocolate almond cake, and there is an interception and both Bell and Paulson get hurt. Then, I come back and out special teams players bust out and score…obviously,
I AM NOT FROSTING ANY MORE CAKES!

Yeah
And Bell with a sore ankle… looks like I won’t be racking up any points on the pre-game predictions this week (I had Everett w/ 3 catches and Bell with 82 yards)
This is OK, Right?
Marching steadily, first down with a short running play, our D gets a breather?
Love My Bruins
nothing wrong with it
Fulmer gambled that Craft (making his first UCLA start) couldn’t convert a 3rd and 15. Not many coaches would take the risk, but it was not a bad strategic decision, and certainly not an insult as I saw it.
Craft
What does Craft have on his wrist? Are those the plays written out?

So most of the country is watching this game now...
and the Bruins are making a better impression than most expected, and the Vols don’t look like a #18 team.
Thats a good TO by CRN
settling everyone down.
Our first TO. We haven’t wasted all of them like we used to in the first Q.
It will be so nice
to not lose so many timeouts, because we could not even get the play in. Like it was some complicated play to begin with.
Calling a TO before the play clock expires b/c of confusion?
Wow. Not hard to do. One wonders why KD let the damn clock run down every single time that would happen.
What I've noticed...
…is that when we screw up, the announcers assume CRN is telling his guy what the smart play would have been (here, the announcers assume CRN was telling Craft to throw underneath to set up a FG rather than throw it away and force a punt).
Last year, when we screwed up, they’d cut to the shot of a confused KD and we’d all shake our heads and sigh.
Beautiful defense once again...
If this is the way our defense is going to look the rest of the year, then this is my emotion: :)

Last year
…we’d have been down by 7, because I don’t recall ever seeing heads-up special teams play like that.
Doh!
Austin hasn’t called a fair catch all game, even with multiple Vols in his face. When he finally had some blocking set up, he does.
But hey, special teams has been brilliant so far, so I’ll let that slide.

That sucked
Throwing floaters to double coverage… he needs to sit down
Dammit
Craft needs to quit floating the ball so high.
C-Force, bring your A-game at practice, because one might think the QB battle will be back on.
Craft needs to just forget and get his head back in the game. Sharpen up the throws. Hopefully NC will start calling more screens and quick slants, b/c any long throw is problematic for us.
This is where losing Paulsen and Everett, guys who excel at the short passing game, really hurts.
damnit
3 in the first half…
not good whne your QB has thrown as many picks as I have had drinks while watching said picks
I don't know...
I think we might have to let him work through this. I just wish it weren’t Tennessee on the other side of the field.
Olive Garden Halftime Report?!?
There are just some sponsors that should never be allowed for a college football game. Geez.
They are going to go for it on fourth
because they have no respect for the UCLA offense
No, it was a safe call for them
UCLA’s best offense has been our defense and special teams.
4th and 14 with eh field position? That’s just asking for ATV to score a quick 6.
Get out of bounds!
Nice to get points here
Shoulder to Shoulder...The Ralphie Report - All CU, All the Time http://www.ralphiereport.com/
How completely arrogant is Fulmer???
I’m sure he wasn’t planning on this kind of showing in front of a national TV audience.
WTF
should never never never have let him continue to pass
Can't force the ball in there
Craft needs to learn when to either run with it for a few yards or throw it away. That was too damn easy for TN.
If you’re going to force it in there, don’t throw it a stride behind the receiver, by the way.
My thoughts exactly
It is a Neu era. So it blew up in our face. We’re only down by 7 in a game no one gave us a chance.
by bruinbabe2000 on Sep 1, 2008 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions
Reading CRN's lips on that replay..
“F**k me”
For what it’s worth, it beats CTS and his deer in the headlights gaze.
Unfortunatly, I think we are going to see more of that this year
But yes, it is better than the deer in the headlights look.

On a side note...
…when did UC police start wearing those Southern, wannabe goober state trooper hats?
I mean, f*ck, this is California, not some sh*t-kickin’, Klan-runnin’ backwater.
I think given the circumstances
we should be proud of the effort. We are down our top TB, TE and WR.
And we are still only down by 7.
Craft screwed up few times. We just need to calm him down.
LETS GO!
We get the ball to start the half, Right?
We have had 4 turnovers and we are only downby 7. Who would have expected that?
The O line has to step up and open some holes for a running game.
sjh
I love CRN, but...
…can someone get CBH on the phone to talk to Craft?
How many times did AA go out and just flat out suck in the first half, only to come out in the second half and be an absolute stud? Something CBH says sure seems to work.
Maybe we could get some of that for Craft. ;)
Record?
According to http://abacus.bates.edu/CollegeRelations/sports/football/foot_records.html, the most interceptions in a game in college football history was 3. Craft broke that record in a half. faints

Not quite
That’s for Bates College only.
For all of college football, the quickest answer I found was 5.
Lee Cook, Oklahoma St. (FBS) vs. Detroit, Nov. 28, 1942
Walt Pastuszak, Brown (FCS) vs. Rhode Island, Oct. 8, 1949
Byron Beaver, Houston (FBS) vs. Baylor, Sept. 22, 1962
Dan Rebsch, Miami (Ohio) (FBS) vs. Western Mich., Nov. 4, 1972
Strike that
I made the same mistake. The above is most INTs made by a defensive player.
For those still interested, the most thrown in one game:
Most Passes Intercepted Game – 9 – John Reaves, Florida vs. Auburn, Nov. 1, 1969
Should we do a new game thread?
For new mojo for KC?
or keep the defensive/special teams mojo going.
Well, Let's See..
if the similarities between CBH and CRN continue, because I’ve said it many, many times that CBH = Halftime Adjustment Genius.
C’mon CRN. Do the magic.
Love My Bruins
I don't care if we lose, I'm worried about the injuries
At this rate we will need many walkons by the final game of the season to suit up a team
On the plus side...
…your defense is ridiculously stout (especially in the middle of the d-line), and your cheerleaders are hawt.
It was impressive
I didn’t know if your freshmen were are good as the media hyped them to be, but it looks like they are the real deal. I’ll be keeping an eye on them.

How can a QB at this level...
show this much lack of understanding about the ins and outs of his position? In the annals of BRUIN QB’s ….only Jimmy Bonds showed as much incomptencey!
Everyone else looks pretty decent.
He was talking about how they played Georgia his first game
He got too close to Uga (the bulldog) and the dog puked on his shoe. He said he would keep Craft away from Smokey. I don’t know if he did.
by bruinbabe2000 on Sep 1, 2008 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions
Glasses...
Half full – the line is doing better than expected IMO, the teamis playing the #18 tough, defense looks good
Half empty – Craft – CALM DOWN… I would love to see more roll outs like the pass play before the int, and the injuries are a big conern….
Did CRN have all those by halftime???
Plus he was on the road , not at home.
We are averaging 9.4 per reception and 1.6 per run
O line doing a good job protecting QB but nothing on the run.
Expect a trick play or 2.
sjh
Craft
Since I have only followed Bruin football (as a student, past season ticket holder until Dorrell pillaged the program) since 1968, I am at a loss to find a worse starting quarterback. As bad as Bonds was, he was Peyton Manning compared to this kid. Can you imagine what he would have done with the Dorrell system. I give Neuheisal credit for having some hair left after watching this kid..
Not get too down on the kid
He’s made some mistakes and TN, having an elite defense, has made him pay the penalty.
Hopefully NC can put together an offensive package so that Craft won’t have the option of forcing the ball in like he has been. If he can calm down and put together a good drive, we’re back in this.
Agreed.
Come on, let’s give this kid some slack—he’s playing against a pretty elite team in front of a national audience.
Nobody really thought we’d be this close at halftime.
Love My Bruins
You don't win ballgames
by laying down om the 50 yard line with a minute to go in the half – it’s that type of mentality that leads to mediocrity – just need to be a bit smarter at the qb position – we knew this was going to be a learning experience. That was just a very poor decision and pass at the wrong time. He’s got the half to calm down and NC can make play calling adjustments (more roll outs IMO). Let’s go Bruins! This game is winnable!!
Absolutely Right!
We are playing to win, not playing not to lose.
I like the decision to try to get a score.
sjh
JUST CHILL
if someone said we’d go into half down by 7 i think i woulda taken it…cross your fingers for Bell, Pausen, and Everett
GO BRUINS!!!
I am a one trick pony
It is not all Craft’s fault.
If we had a running game, he wouldn’t be passing all the time. He could calm down because all he’d be doing was handing off.
It is not all on him.
I’m sure the coaches will implore the O line to open some holes.
We have 19 yards rushing.
You don’t win a lot of games that way.
Yes, Craft isn’t playing well. But, it is not all on him. Come on, O line, give this kid some support.
sjh
Would love to see...
…some more screens and short passes, just to get the offense moving and, hopefully, help the line open up some holes for the running game.
Get the ball in the hands of some of our playmakers, like Austin or Carter, on a screen and see what they can create. I know this harkens back to the KD era, but MJD did that to perfection. Took a little screen and just, using his athleticism, speed, strength, and pure resolve, made great things happen.
Oh ..we're chillin'...
But like gary 72.. I have followed UCLA since the 60’s.. and believe me when I tell you Craft is not equpped to play the QB position… not at this level.
Just saw the replays
…maybe Craft will eventually wind up ok, but on all the interceptions he was given good protection, he wasn’t rushed. Three of them were jus horrible passes. Now, let’s get busy in the second half.
