Non-Revenue Sports Bruin Review and Calendar

I'm going to bring back this weekly look at our non-revenue sports. A calendar with the game times for every game will be on here so if you have the time, make your way out to Westwood and check out our Bruins in some less publicized sports. Also, if you do go out to a game or have interest in a specific team, please share your thoughts and make this more of a jumping off point for discussion about our smaller sports.

Women's Soccer

Let's start with our third ranked women's soccer team who is coming off of a national title game appearance and will look to extend their streak of five consecutive trips to the Women's College Cup (for a more detailed season preview check this out). The Bruins opened their season at home versus UC Santa Barbara and played the match without three of their top players, yet came away with a 2-1 win. With all their players ready to play, the Bruins traveled north to play the sixth ranked Portland Pilots. There, in front of 4,351 Pilot fans, the Bruins came away with a 1-0 victory courtesy of a goal by US Olympian Lauren Cheney. The Bruin victory also snapped Portland's 17 game home win streak. UCLA will stay in Portland a little longer to take on Portland St. in a Labor Day match before coming home for a battle with UC Irvine on September 7th.

Men's Soccer

The 14th ranked Bruins look to rebound from a disappointing 2007 season with a slate of tough games, especially early in the season (you can check out a season preview here). UCLA's first match of the season was a televised match on Fox Soccer Channel at the Home Depot Center versus #9 Maryland. In front of over 3,000 fans the Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the first half, but gave up the tying goal in the final minute and another goal in overtime to fall 2-1 to the Terps. The Bruins bounced back nicely though when they defeated UC Riverside 3-0 at Drake Stadium. Next, the Bruins head east to play in a tournament hosted by Wake Forest where they will take on the #1 Demon Deacons and #24 North Carolina.

Women's Volleyball

The #6 Bruins started off their season in Hawaii where they took place in the Wahine Volleyball Classic. In their first match they drew Ohio, a team that was no match for the Bruins as they quickly disposed of the Bobcats 25-21, 25-22, 25-21. UCLA then played top ranked Penn St. and were clearly over matched, losing in straight sets. The Bruins still had one match left in Hawaii and it was not an easy one as they played the host Rainbow Wahine who are ranked #12 in the nation. UCLA bounced back from their loss to Penn St. in fine fashion though and defeated Hawaii in four sets, 23-25, 25-23, 26-24, 30-28. The Bruins play one midweek game at UC Riverside this week before heading to Reno for the Nevada Tournament.

Men's Golf

The defending NCAA champion Bruins will begin their new season season right where they left off their last. UCLA earned the preseason #1 ranking in the coaches poll and will begin their season in September 19th at the Fighting Illini Invitational in Chicago.

Women's Golf

The women's golf team didn't do as well as the men's team in the preseason coaches poll, but they came close when they checked in at #2. The Bruin return their entire NCAA tournament lineup, including two All-Americans while adding two of the nation's top freshmen.

Men's and Women's Cross Country

Both of the UCLA cross country teams will begin their season at the UC Irvine Invitational on September 6.

Women's Tennis

Riza Zalameda and Tracy Lin, two members of the Bruins' 2008 NCAA Championship team who have since graduated, played as a team in the double competition at the US Open and won their opening match before falling in the second round.

How good are Wake Forest and UNC in men’s soccer?

Seems like women’s volleyball team has been underachieving for a while. When was the last time this team brought home a NC?

Wake Forest is the #1 team in the country

they’re stacked with talent and Friday’s match will be verrrrrrrry tough. UNC is a solid squad that plays very well together. They organized in the back and do a good job of getting their outside backs into the attack to throw crosses into the box. We have far more talent than them, but they kill teams that lack organization and shape. If we can maintain our shape then we should be able to stop their counter attack and take control of the match.

Our last NC in women’s volleyball was in ‘91. It seems like every year we’re good, but just not the best. We get to the national semis or so, but bow out to teams who are superior. I don’t know too much about the program so if anyone out there does, feel free to chime in and inform us on the program.

It's nice when your soccer score looks like a football score

Women beat Portland State 7-0.

Winning at Portland is even more impressive after their visit to Drake in last year’s tourney. There weren’t many of them, but they were loud. Playing in front of four thousand of them has got to be unlike any other experience in college soccer.
