Beat Stanford Week?
Yep! That's right. After changing it from Beat$C week to Blue and Gold week, this year it's not even before the $UC game. Due to regulations regarding noise and such during 10th week, they have decided to move it.

WHAT?
What are these regulations? So from now on we can’t have a Beat $c rally before that game or this is temporary??? Bummer!

I think
that its just temporary because this year Beat SC week falls during 10th week.

I find this to be quite absurd
I’m curious what part of Blue and Gold Week is too loud that it is in the way of students preparing for finals?
Is it the rally at the bottom of Janns Steps? If that is the argument then that does not make sense. Arguable the loudest part of the rally is the marching band. The same marching band that practices on the IM field for two hours on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday of 10th week and every other week. I don’t get it. What part of Beat SC Week Blue and Gold Week is too loud that it can’t be during 10th week?

Noise???
I don’t get it either – it IS at Janss steps – you are right. This is embarrasing – do you think $c is gonna have a beat Oregon State week? Nope. This rally really gets fans pumped up to beat the trOJans and the players get riled up too. I go most every year and I’m disappointed.

We have a CEO who can fix this
At least we know where the Berkeley tree people went after Paul Bunyan showed up. They immediately got jobs as administrators at UCLA. I have a feeling that a coach with relentless optimism and a full passion bucket will figure out a way to deal with this pretty absurd situation.

I talked to the director of the Blue and Gold Week Committee...
and found out that she was as disappointed as everyone here that the U$C game was during 10th week and a bonfire and rally would not be allowed. I directed the Campus Spirit committee of the Student Alumni Association back in 2001-02 (back when it was still called Beat $C Week!) and am familiar with some of the bureaucracy that the campus asserts on the alumni association in planning these events. It has always been University policy to not allow any amplified sound during 10th week, in order to allow for a better study environment for students. The reason the rally is before the Stanford game was simply that it was the best home game left, after the Fall quarter begins and students come back to campus. This bonfire before the U$C game will NOT be eliminated in years to come. We will most likely see it back next season as long as the football schedule better corresponds with the academic calendar next year. I guess this is what happens when our University actuall values education over athletics (GASP!!!). Its kind of bittersweet.

Why not just work it in with the midnight yell
problem solved. Everyone gets to be as loud as they want and the only fire that is started is a controlled, fire-marshal approved one that everyone can get behind. Much safer than the random fires that used to be set 10th week while I was in school I’d say. So simple.

I think midnight yell has been replaced by the Undie Run.

Noise
They must want to put an end to all the noise that is caused by the sweet confetti bonfire they have these days to replace the actual the fire.
