Here comes the whine again
Here they come.
The whiners, the doubters, the over-analyzers.
The weak-minded, the lazy, the entitled.
I am so proud of this team. Let me tell you something: in nearly every game this season, our players will be outmatched. Every single game, except perhaps Washington State. I am talking on an overall level, not at specific positions. We were thoroughly outmatched even against Tennessee, except in the coaching department. The heart of the players wasn’t outmatched, but their abilities were. And you know what? I think they know this, and yet they come out and play hard every game because they believe in the coaches. If you don’t believe me, look at how ecstatic they were when we beat Tennessee. How often have you seen a QB go up and hug a coach like Craft did? And they played hard against BYU, even if they made some mistakes: just look at how few penalties we had, that is a sign of discipline.
The single, unifying, indisputable goal of this team is not to go to a bowl game or “overachieve”, but to lay down the foundation for a new UCLA dynasty. And the way to do that is to take your licks and keep getting up, to listen to your coaches, to learn how to practice efficiently and to create a positive environment that will entice top recruits to want to come here. Essentially, what the players should be demonstrating is that if these coaches can do “this” with us, imagine what they could do with you and for you. It will take a huge selfless act on their part, but it really is in their benefit anyway. The major, glaring obstacle for these coaches is to NOT LET THEM GIVE UP. And that, my friends, is why CRN keeps repeating his mantra of Relentless Optimism.
CRN will need to do some smart recruiting over the next two years, and to follow in Howland’s footsteps in recruiting winners, not just talent. The kind of players who will get in their teammates’ faces for not working hard enough in practice, for laughing it up on the sidelines during a blowout. I have no interest in the ra-ra “primeval” garbage spewing out from the thugs in the South Central locker room. I want some football players. I want me some Mata Real and some Afflalo…in pads.
It will happen, and I for one will continue to support the coaches and the players. It’s not their fault, really. I am trying to say this without being demeaning, but many of them shouldn’t even be at UCLA. And that is ALL CTS’s fault, bringing in the scraps from the rest of the Pac-10’s recruiting.
CTS had banked his UCLA coaching career on last year’s team. That’s how he recruited, with a one-year outlook. He figured, once he had another fake 10-win season, he’d get his extension and all would be fine. It wasn’t a bad strategy, for that one year…but he forgot about the coaching part, and he sure forgot about what would follow the “magical” season. And now we are left with his Lavinoma-like legacy: no center (OL) and no point guard (QB – even BO wouldn’t have been here if he hadn’t redshirted due to injury). So CRN still has my trust. I still expect no more than 4 or 5 wins this year, a bowl game next year and contending for the Pac-10 in 2010.
LET’S GO!!!

I think 7 wins is still VERY achievable
After getting the unexpected Tennessee win, I upgraded my season outlook from 6 wins to 7. I looked at 4 games in which I hoped to get 2 wins: @ BYU, home vs Fresno St, @ Washington, and @ Cal. The BYU loss hurt, but I still feel pretty confident about winning 2 of the 3 remaining games. Combine that with home wins against Arizona, Stanford, Washington St, and Oregon St and we’ve got a VERY ATTAINABLE 7 win season. It could be the most meaningful 6th place finish in the history of UCLA football! LOL!
GO BRUINS!
i agree
I think 7, and I’ll even go on a limb and say we still have a (long) shot at 8. Again, I can’t back up these predictions with any real argument, but I’m staying positive. I certainly won’t be disappointed if we fall way short and end up with only 5 wins. But I believe in the staff. I believe they will learn from each loss and will get the players to learn and take ownership for each loss.

I love your enthusiasm!
I am positive myself, but I simply do not see us winning very much this year. Unless Palcic can find a magic formula with the OL, we are in for a heap of trouble as a one-dimensional offense. There is a reason CRN and Chow both stressed that they wanted to run the ball even before spring practice. It is imperative, and right now I just don’t see it. A healthy Kahlil Bell will give us a boost, but it will still be extremely tough. And that is a real shame, because the #2 spot in the Pac-10 is truly up for grabs this year.
It will be a struggle
and the OL is a serious problem. I don’t think they can stop many defenses, but they should be able to slow them for some quick passes and maybe a few runs here and there. We don’t have the size, but I think we have the speed to get some things done on offense. It will take some time to adjust and some clever plays, but I think our staff can pull it off. One of the biggest challenges, in my opinion, is keeping the players’ spirits up.

Great Post
I’m ready to don a kilt, paint blue stripes on my face and face the English at Stirling. My point is that you wrote a very motivating statement. I think we all back our team, but after a defeat like the one we suffered at BYU it’s easy for some to lose passion.
Good job refilling the passion bucket.

@ Cal? @ Washington?
That’s a tough pick out of those. I think that game will be the toughest. Even tougher than @ Oregon. The Fresno State Game is not even close to a gimmie, they are a very sound football team. @ washington… This game will be very difficult to come away with a Win. They will be playing for pride and their coach. It is realistic to predict 5 wins: 1)Tenn 2) Arizona 3) WSU 4) Stanford & 5) Oregon State. I think you can toss up the rest. In my opinion. Of course going into each gaem I always believe we have a chance to win with our coaching and the way our kids have proven they can play.

I never said any of those wins were "gimmies"...
I listed Fresno St because it is a home game and we play much better at home, historically speaking. Besides, they may be ranked and look solid, but the are NOT a top 10 team. It is definitely not out of the question to come out of that game with a win. After beating Tennessee at home, provided our health is at least average, I like our chances against Fresno St. I fully disagree that @ Cal will be tougher than @ Oregon. Being that half of UCLA seems to come from the Bay Area, we always have a lot of fans there to support our team. Additionally, Oregon is a much stronger team than Cal this season. The Ducks offense is loaded, once again. You could be right about 5 wins, but I’d like to believe that our coaching staff combined with the favorable home schedule (7 home games) are good enough to manufacture another couple wins and get us to 6 or 7.
