Uh oh

We should probably be careful with Mercer. They beat $c last year IIRC. ;)

Eh...

Isn’t the Oregon trip the easiest in the Pac-10 right now? Not that any of them are easy, but relatively…

My initial thoughts on the schedule – we don’t have a lot of tough non-conference games. Playing in Austin will be tough, and there could be some solid teams in the 2k Sports Classic, but other than that there sure are a lot of cupcakes on the schedule. Given that this appears to be a down year in the Pac-10, I’m looking for the team to put together another 30-win season.

agree with pac-10 comment

pac10 is weak this year. i expect no more than 2 losses in pac10 play.

You may be right

I guess I always think of Oregon as a really tough place to play in general. Just opening with 3 road games was what I was thinking but yes, it will hopefully be easier than previous years.

Let's not have this debate again

We have had lot of discussions on Howland’s preseason scheduling philosophy. He puts it together in a way that prepares the team for the conference season and tourney. Lot of people were making fun of UCLA for scheduling Davidson last year in Wooden Classic. They were nowhere to be found during March.

Bruins will have a tough road game at Texas and will take on quality competition if they take care of business in early round of Sports Classic. Rest of the schedule will give Howland perfect opportunity to develop his freshmen. We will enjoy Ben Ball no matter who we play and if you can’t find enjoyment in watching a Howland coached team, might as well look for another website to follow college hoops.

Uhm...

If my remarks were taken either as a complaint against CBH’s scheduling, or gave the impression that I can’t find enjoyment in every Ben Ball game, my apologies, but that’s far from what the point I was trying to make – which was simply that our schedule appears to be weaker this year (both because of non-conference games and a weaker Pac-10). That’s just my opinion of course, and I was hoping others would continue that line of discussion.

I realize that in the past there have been people piling on for what they saw as weak scheduling by CBH, but I’ve never been in that group (nor do I intend to pile on with them this year, or any year to come, as long as CBH is our coach). If CBH feels that this is our ideal schedule, for whatever reason, be that to develop freshman and upperclassman who haven’t played much/together in the past, or to give the team experience against teams of varying styles, then great – I hope he’s happy with the way it came together. I’ll continue to watch every game with enthusiasm and support the team just as I did in years past (even when that meant shelling out for a Sling Box so I could see our Ben Ball Warriors while in Europe last year) and I hope I did not give the impression otherwise.

This again?

Every year people complain about our OOC schedule and every year some/most of those teams end up being tourney teams.

I really like the home date with Notre Dame. This should be a great mid season litmus test with what will most likely be a top team at that point. My only concern is that we will overlook Southern Cal in anticipation. Thank goodness for CBH who will keep our players in check and remind them what they did to us last year at home.

This should be a fantastic year for UCLA hoops.
Looking forward to a fourth straight Pac-10 title.

UM?

Is our series with the Michigan over?

by schubert69 on Sep 18, 2008 8:39 AM PDT   0 recs

Yes

we played a home and home series with Michigan, but when Ohio St. pulled out of a home and home series just before the 06-07 season we needed an opponent to fill their spot and sign up for another home and home with Michigan. Now that second home and home is over, however we may still could play the Wolverines again this year as they are also in the 2K Sports Classic.

The only complaint I ever have with Howland's schedule

is when he doesn’t take us on the road to a tough place before Pac 10 play. I like seeing our boys get in a toguh environment early so when we head into Pac 10 play our young guys have experienced it before. With our game at Texas this year that is taken care of and I have no complaints.

Hopefully...

we can enact some revenge for last year’s loss – should be a great game and a great atmosphere.

I Am So Excited

for this BBall season to start! ( I am going to try to go to the Texas game.)

As for the schedule, Coach Howland knows precisely what he is doing, and it doesn’t seem ill-advised to me, at all. He has a bunch of uber-talented freshman he wants to bring along and get ready for the tournament, and he needs to build them into his kind of players…the kind that win the easy games, and the tough ones, and get better playing both.

Love My Bruins

You should DEFINITELY go to Texas

I went to the Final Four last year in San Antonio and spent one night in Austin. I had a GREAT time there! Friendly people, great BBQ, and cheap drinks! Its a great colege town! I will take any opportunity to get back there that I can find. Unfortunately, the Texas game this year is mid-week so I will not be able to make the trip. Have a great time for me!

GO BRUINS!

One Question

I’m in full support of BH and his change to the scheduling philosophy has clearly reaped significant benefits for the Bruins. It has gradually been revealed as one of his great strengths, along with so many other things.

But I’m just curious about one thing. Have the Bruins reached the point now, with the evolution and remarkable improvement of the program, that they might take the schedule up one notch? I’m not critiquing in any way the scheduling changes as they went into effect over the past few years—all of those questions were more than answered by the results. But now the program seems to have been fully restored to elite status. (There are two more steps to go: first, the return to championship status; and then the unnecessary and probably impossible return to dominant/dynasty status.) And I wonder if the genuine arrival as an elite, disciplined team with abundant depth and talent changes the scheduling approach somehow. Not that I know what’s missing or what the small changes might be, but the program seems to be in a very different place right now.

I know that freshman are a big part of the equation and it’s important to get them off to a good start and to try to figure out their roles. And some of them may be cycling through every year, like Love and Westbrook. It’s hard to argue with having everything aimed at success in Pac-10 play as the first critical building block. And one of the most impressive things about the scheduling approach, which only became really clear last year, is the way that BH has the Bruins playing against teams that have philosophies and approaches that will be similar to what they will face as things get tough. It will be fun to study that as we get closer.

But all that being said, it seems there are two things on the other side of the ledger. First, the Bruins are solid, improving, their recruiting is amazing and their depth is getting better with each new class. They’re just not going to lose any gimme games or be stunned anymore—again, I know that all of these games exist for a strategic purpose and there are no empty gimmes, but I do wonder if there is another level to explore.

And secondly, there’s the selfish issue for fans like myself. We want to see as much of the best product as possible. The program is selling out, but there might still be a smidge of potential revenue left on the table in December.

Questions for discussion and not criticism. I don’t know how to state strongly enough that I have complete faith in BH in all of these matters.

by citizen zhiv on Sep 22, 2008 11:53 AM PDT   0 recs

If you have complete faith

then just let it be and enjoy the team.
