PB Unleashed: Arizona Second Half Thread

Our defense is hanging in there (despite taking some early punches).

Let's hope they keep fighting just like they did in this game:

And let's hope the offense can use the momentum in that last drive to come out in rhythm in the second half ... just like that game referenced above.

This is our second half Arizona thread.

GO BRUINS.

we have been

more of a second half team so far. Obviously in the Tenn game, but we did do better (although against second teamers) against BYU as well. Heres hoping!

Signs of good coaching

Able to make the halftime adjustments and be better in the 3rd quarter – though, I’m not sure we have the horses to really make it go.

yup

One thing you know, is that our coaches are smart. They will do their best to throw it all at the other team and play to our strengths. The problem is the limited number of strengths we possess in any given situation.

The Way I See It....

We need to come out and make a statement sometime early in the 2nd half. We can’t have the “D” out there for prolonged periods or they’ll simply get worn down.

All it has to do is stop them.

I’ve been reading here and watching the Fox game track. The D is causing its own problems.

In fact, we’ve run more O plays than they have.

How about

A slant and go right now? Fake 3 step drop

by McNown to Farmer on Sep 20, 2008 2:43 PM PDT reply actions

scary that we have 3rd down

about ever set of downs. Too many opportunities to have a mistake kill a drive. We need to get some first downs on first or second down.

by sponkey21 on Sep 20, 2008 2:43 PM PDT reply actions

Punt - fair catch

Well that offensive series sucked. Need to force a fumble.

by McNown to Farmer on Sep 20, 2008 2:44 PM PDT reply actions

incomplete

slant pass too high.

one of the big problems with short routes – if a complete pass only gets you 4 yards, you have to complete all 3 in a row every series to move the chains. we just don’t appear to be capable of that kind of consistency right now. and we haven’t shown much promise at throwing further downfield.

by gbruin on Sep 20, 2008 2:45 PM PDT reply actions

you have to hope

that every once in a while someone breaks a tackle and you get 20 or so

by sponkey21 on Sep 20, 2008 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions

And

we don’t have a WR who can be a game breaker. The ones who could be potential game breakers are all frosh.

by Nestor on Sep 20, 2008 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

right

i agree with what you are saying. but what we need we need are players, not hope. it’ll take time.

by gbruin on Sep 20, 2008 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh I agree with you

Its going to be a long season.

by Nestor on Sep 20, 2008 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Craft doesn't have a strong arm

Its keeping Chow away from calling for passes downfield.

by Nestor on Sep 20, 2008 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions

right

that’s where we are limited by our personnel.

greg in denver

by gbruin on Sep 20, 2008 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I think

Coaches will have to think about other QBs like Prince if we keep this up.

and what if Olson is 100 percent in few weeks? I think you might have to give him a shot.

by Nestor on Sep 20, 2008 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

olson

would never be able to make a scramble like craft has in this game

by sponkey21 on Sep 20, 2008 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Olson has a stronger arm though

Craft is not doing much right now besides scrambling.

by Nestor on Sep 20, 2008 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions

but olson

would never have time to get the receivers down field to use his arm. I think we need Craft to get better right now, he is the most viable option we have with this line.

by sponkey21 on Sep 20, 2008 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

We will see

How next couple of games shows. If Craft is not getting it done … I have to think coaches will not sit still. They will explore other options.

by Nestor on Sep 20, 2008 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I think

Neu gave a hint about how long he’ll hold to KC, in 3 weeks he said Terry pull him.

by brewinz on Sep 20, 2008 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions

The one short one...

…that would have gone a long way was Johnson’s drop.

by McNown to Farmer on Sep 20, 2008 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions

First down

Had a chance to bring him down short of the marker, but the TE gets enough

by McNown to Farmer on Sep 20, 2008 2:48 PM PDT reply actions

by BruinFan96 on Sep 20, 2008 2:49 PM PDT reply actions

by McNown to Farmer on Sep 20, 2008 2:49 PM PDT reply actions

game over

Offense does not have what it takes for 3 scores with 7 minutes left. Barring a pick six, game over.

We need help on all sides of the ball

Perez is our only standout player and he isn’t getting the support he needs to look good.

Throwing the ball is the only way they can give this away. Run the ball, run clock, and shorten the game.

It clear

that progress on this team can’t be measure on Ws, but rather baby steps. IE, next week lets have a game with only one bad punt coverage

Actually

the OL has played decent in this game notwithstanding the latest holding call.

The run game definitely looked better, especially after half.

Run defense tightened up in the second half.

After these three games

I really really want to see UCLA become Lineman U. I think that is the thing that has made u$c quarterbacks look good (and in my opinion what makes Tom Brady look good). Look how Palmer and Leinart have done in the NFL. We need to have one of the best offensive lines in the country, otherwise it won’t matter if Brehaut goes on to be a hall of famer in the NFL, he won’t succeed at UCLA.

Thank you Mr. Dorrell

I think we should find Mr. Dorrell’s Miami e-mail address and thank him for what he has left us….I know we will turn it around sometime this decade but it is disheartening to see the worst offense in America…just check the stats if you think I am exaggerating. Again, thank you Mr. Dorrell

If you know who was still the head coach.

by Nestor on Sep 20, 2008 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Great,,,,as opposed to 1-11

Unfortunately, as a result of KD, we will probably be 1—11 as opposed to 0-12. I wonder if they will be able to recruit given what the nation sees as UCLA football.

greg in denver

by gbruin on Sep 20, 2008 3:00 PM PDT reply actions

No progress

Our gunners absolutely suck. We have a full-time special teams coach, but our coverage teams have been very bad this season

by McNown to Farmer on Sep 20, 2008 3:00 PM PDT reply actions

For this year

we have to try to keep games low scoring, because we sure aren’t going to be putting up 30 points a game. In order to do that, we have to establish the run to control the ball and the clock and make the game short. That falls on the O line. I hate the 3 yard slant pass. You gotta connect on every one of them to control the game, and we just can’t do that well enough right now.

That’s why I like. He calls it like it is.

by Nestor on Sep 20, 2008 3:06 PM PDT reply actions

True

Petros calls it the way he sees it for all teams, even his alma mater (most of the time). One of the few announcers who are willing to do so.

by Minnesota Bruinfan on Sep 20, 2008 3:09 PM PDT reply actions

coverage

do we really need a special teams coach if this is what end up with? this is terrible. Every game this year. Perez and Forbath were already solid, so you don’t attribute this to Ganz. He orchestrated one blocked punt this year, but that is the end of the positives I have for special teams.

I really worry about recruiting

$c already has around 10 fantastic commitments, the worst of which is still rated as well as our best (Brehaut). We are not going to attract a lot of good recruits here the way we play. About the only thing Neu can sell is playing time and the fact that just about anyone could stand out as a fantastic player on a roster like this. Very tough uphill battle here.

Well everyone

this was the first game I got to watch this year. Not the result we were looking for, but I’d rather be a Bruin than a Wildcat today, tomorrow, and every other day for the rest of eternity. Thanks for hanging in there to the end. It’s gonna be a long road this year, and maybe for another year or two after that, but I still have hope for the future, and that’s something I didn’t have the last few years.

I’m out of Summer Ale. Hope the Oktoberfest is out!

66, hope home is ready soon.

peace, BN.

Why are we playing Craft?

Just a simple question for the board. Why is Craft playing. He has had 12 quarters to do something and has failed miserably in 11 of them…Even if one of the freshmen is a disaster, how would it be any different. It is clear tha Craft found his level at the community college level. I realize that there is not a single player on offense who is a Division 1/BCS level player, so I am not blaming Craft for this; however, since the season is a bust, why not get experience for the freshmen. I am tired of watching Johnson drop passes, offense giving up sacks or holding, Austin going in slow motion, Thierot chop blocking, and Craft making stupid decisions…
