PB Unleashed: Fresno State Open Thread

Fresno St. Bulldogs at UCLA Bruins, Sep 27, 2008 12:30 PM PDT

Here we go.

Thousands of Fresno State Bull Dog fans are invading the Rose Bowl this afternoon. They probably didn’t need UCLA’s ill advised ad blitz specifically targeting Fresno State fans inviting them to enjoy their team’s "first-ever win at the Rose Bowl" to get all fired up.

As for the Bruins, they will have each other, their coaching staff, and all the diehard, true blue fans from Bruin Nation rooting them on pull off an upset. May be the return of Kahlil Bell will give them a little boost:

The kickoff time is scheduled for 12:30 pm PST on ABC (regional coverage).

If you need to get caught up on all of our notes concerning this game from this game week, you can do so by going here. Also you can click on the links below under "Related Item" for updated game stats and track the game via UCLA's official site and WWL's game page.

Bruins are banged up. They will be undermanned. Let’s hope they can come out and play some inspired football, and work on to improve from the performance of last weekend. With that said time to get started with another game thread filled with our passion buckets.

Fire away.

GO BRUINS.

The game is not being shown here in Birmingham, therefore, rather than pay $22, Mr. BB have gone to the UAB campus because he can access ESPN 360 here.

The things we do for the love of our alma mater.

Thanks to Ike, I’ve not seen us lose. I’ve just seen us win. My trend will carry over, today.

I think you are our good luck charm this season. Are you back in Houston? Did Mrs. 66 and Jen head out to Pasadena?

Got Power Thursday Night

Class of 67 is in Conn (another death in the family).

Jen is being a teenager, shopping for homecoming dresses and catching a flick.

Both golden retrievers, cheering on the Bruins with me.

We first ran in a kickoff for a touchdown, but it got called back on a holding penalty. And then we went 3nout, and punted. They returned that punt for a touchdown.

by dokein on Sep 27, 2008 1:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Worse than that

Austin returned the opening kick off 101 yards for a TD that was called back because of a hold. When we had to punt, they got a run back straight up the middle, untouched, for a TD.

I’ve never liked the end-of-half or end-of-game Prevent D that DW uses. It always seems to kill us. Remember @ Notre Dame 2 years ago? It’s like he gets really conservative, calls off the pressure and the opposing QB just moves down the field like a hot knife through butter.

Making some progress

We talked last week about how we can’t just look at the scoreboard this season, but have to look for smaller improvements from week to week.

Running game – much better than the last 2 weeks. OL showing signs of improvement. Credit to Palcic?
Kick returns – Austin much more aggressive this week, and results show that.
QB – seems to be making sharper throws. Can’t carry the team. Will benefit from effective running game.
Punt coverage – back to the drawing board. Killed us last week, and makes it hard on the D.
Pass rush – biggest problem today. If we can’t pressure with our down lineman, we have so blitz someone.
D line – still vulnerable to runs to our right side. Need to tighten that and force longer 3rd downs.

I don’t think there is a huge quantum between FSU and Arizona, and BYU is very good, but I’m still not convinced they are top-10, so I think it’s fair to be encouragied by this first half compared to the last 8 quarters.

We have to tighten up our rushing defense, big time. I expect a bit more. Pretty good game by our Bruins though, they are playing tough and not giving up. Let’s tighten things up upfront and we’ll win this thing!

it doesn't look as if we'll be able

Big mistake was to have faith in this D

Not a terrible decision if the D could stop them. They have a weak FG kicker.

not declining the penalty

gave us 10 yards *before the down….but then with prevent defense the best we could have hoped for was a 5 yard gain. was 5 yards diff on the FG really worth the risk?

by gradstudentbruin on Sep 27, 2008 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it was a bad decision to have faith in the D

I can explain the theory, but I would not trust this D or DC to make the decision fruitful.

With this D, we should have declined the penalty.

CRN is trying to convince this team he has faith in them. The 4th and 1, taking the penalty those are decisions to show trust.

A game of mistakes

1. Holding call on a TD return (although to be fair the TD might not have happened without the holding)

2. Allow punt return for a FS TD

3. Fumble (although to be fair it was a great tackle and he had the ball secure)

4. Accepting a holding call, turning a 4th and 12 FG into a 3rd and 22 TD.

5. Missed 4th and 1 conversion

6. Numerous times we could not stop them on 3rd down (most important).

7. Some really bad calls by SPTRs

by dokein on Sep 27, 2008 4:11 PM PDT reply actions

Numbers 4, 5

we can fix. Maybe 1 and 3 also.

  1. is the killer this week, and our biggest challenge for the weeks ahead.

7 is baseline.

Right now, those things are too much for our team to overcome.

It won’t always be that way, though.

by Bruins095 on Sep 27, 2008 4:16 PM PDT reply actions

I could be wrong

but I think what makes this loss a disappointment is that our offense did what it was asked to do. You can see the progress as the weeks go by. I don’t think that we want to see what has been seen by experts as our strong point (the D) become our weak point. Today, that is exactly what happened. This was a close one for them to lose to a ranked team. DW needs to not sleep this whole week and fix the D. I hope that DW responds to the pressure that is going to be going his way because we see the improvements happening. I’m proud of the effort from the players. I know we all expect a rough road, but we also shouldn’t use that as an excuse for every loss. Again, I do remain optimistic that we can make the improvements. We’re moving in the right direction. Thanks Neu for instilling hope in our program.

Why did they not let Bell run the last drive?

I am not sure if freshmen running in that situation was a wise call. But then if he didn’t fumble and made a TD, it would have been a wise call.

I am encouraged

very disappointed in the first half defense (I thought we played way too soft) We were better in the second half, but couldn’t stop the run.

I am very pleased with the offense. very happy to see what we saw. I think the key to evaluating this season will be improvement game to game and recruiting. if the defense takes the next step next week, I will be very happy.

Question:

My husband asked me this morning why UCLA never plays “easy” non-conference opponents. I’d always thought that went back to Donahue, for some reason, but….

Not that I disagree with it, at all, but…can someone explain that?

DW Questions

I realize that the defense, recruited by DW has holes in speed and experience, but how do you rationalize being so thoroughly outcoached. I can understand our woeful outside defense, pathetic pass rush, sad pass defense, but the screen that scored the touchdown was classic DW. In fact, I know this will not be a popular take, but I am getting tired of the never say live defense. Can anyone outside of the USC game TWO YEARS AGO, think of a time when DW’s defense did NOT give up a key score. This year they may hold the record for opposition red zone efficiency. I hope we can eventually recruit Division 1 quality, but until then get a personality that is not the “surrender” mentaility that has characterized this year’s defense. We now know that it was NOT just the offense’s incompetence that led to 59-0 losses. Last year’s Utah and every game this year, save Tennessee has been a defensive embarassment….

Biting My Tongue

I could not agree with you more.

I am trying to restrain myself — I’ve consistently said that if CRN wants DW, I want DW.

But, I’m not sure CRN was given a free choice. After all, there we the threats that we’d lose our gold star recruiting class if DW left.

I’m fighting the urge to put up a fan post on this topic.

I’m going to turn off my computer.

Do it.

38.25 pts a game when you had a whole Spring, Summer and Fall to plan for the beginning to this season? I don’t care if you had nothing but freshmen, there’s no excuse for that level of performance in the PAC – 10 and for UCLA.

by Seanny Rotten on Sep 27, 2008 5:05 PM PDT up reply actions

agree!!

Our defense should have been more dominant. Our players are better individual players than Fresno State players. Fresno players weren’t even recruited by UCLA. And UCLA players probably never considered a WAC school. What happened today is our defense was out coached by Fresno’s offensive coaches.

by bruin1998 on Sep 27, 2008 4:43 PM PDT reply actions

tough to replace

Davis, Taylor, Horton, etc., but defense should be playing better. The “tired” or “on the field too long” arguement shouldn’t apply this time. Lack of pass rush is killing the D. tackling has been lacking as well. Lots of work to be done.

by Bruins095 on Sep 27, 2008 4:46 PM PDT reply actions

No Pass Rush

is KILLING us. Where is it? We have some very talented players, but somehow we just cannot get them near the oppoent’s QB…EVER? USC big-time defense completely underestimated OSU’s entire offense—what is our excuse here?

Surely, we expected this QB to put the ball in the air.
