I think Viney has potential to be good one day, but he's clearly overmatched right now. Glad to see DW mixing it up a little

It's about time...

I also am so glad to see Walker FINALLY trying something/someone…anything different, because obviously what they have been doing has been a flop…defensively. I just wonder why it took them four games to make a change, maybe CRN was giving him to much rope and didn’t want to step on any toes……I don’t know about you, but I would have been working on some changes since about the second quarter of the BYU game! What have you got to lose…nothing, you were getting pummeled anyway. So have ATV play so close to Collie (the BYU reciever who had a career day) that you would be in his shirt, and force somebody else to beat you….and who knows maybe you even get a pick. At least you end up trying to make lemonade out of a lemon game, right? Bottom line, if you aren’t getting any pressure, than you have to play them close and take your chances. Because if you don’t have any pressure, and you give them a cushion, well then you give up 59 this year (wasn’t it 45 last year to Utah?….see no adjustments). Whereas offensively I personally have seen big improvements from week to week, and even last week the special teams got on board the improvement train. But the defensive has been running out the same old trick for 3 weeks ( the opener was obviously a fluke) this season(actually since the middle of last year, I read where we had given up 30+ points for 7 or 8 straight games!!) and ever since the first week it has looked pretty ugly, and this coming from the unit that was suppose to hold us together until the offensive caught up! Now why CRN and Chow and the offense are rightfully getting a honeymoon, I don’t think it’s fair the Walker gets that same treatment. He has been running the defense for 3 years now, has what he wants in place and has the most experience group by far the last two years, and this is the best he can do with them? That is what has been so dissapointing to me about Walker. While last year I would see no adjustments during a game on either side of the ball, at least this year I am seeing adjustments (within the injuries and personal limitations) on offense….but on the defensive side…same ole same ole. I know it seem like everyone else is totally sold on Walker, but I am not. While he might have been/or is a major asset in the last couple of years on the recruiting side, I have not seen him produce a good game plan or make adjustments on the run. Heck, for three straight years that he has been he has looked completely lost against the Utah’s and BYU type of offenses! So even if he didn’t adjust during the game the first time, he still hasn’t made any adjustments after 3 years. So sorry I’m not in full agreement with the "I’m glad to see him mixing it up a little bit…….I from the IT’S ABOUT FLIPPING TIME side of the coin, and about 2 years to late!

Appreciate your opinion

but PLEASE use paragraphs. This is painful to read, and I lose you after the first dot dot dot.

He's burning Dye's redshirt

Is it worth it at this point? You don’t want to give up on the season and start playing for next year, but is it best for Dye to get 8 games in this year and lose out on a redshirt year? I say yes, but it’s not an easy answer. Anyone else have any thoughts on it?

Is he definately not playing at all?

I thought for some reason he was already playing some on special teams.

He was listed as likely to redshirt prior to the season

It’s possible they have slipped him in on special teams and I missed it, but he hasn’t been out there yet to my knowledge. If anyone does know that he’s played and already burned the redshirt, please let me know.

but this season is NOT a lost cause yet

We still have 4 very winnable games the schedule, and the pac 10 teams are all so inconsistent a bowl is still possible. Walker and the rest of the staff will do whatever it takes to get the seniors to a bowl game.
Plus we have a lot of talent in the secondary, but we’re seeing this year how important experience is. With Norris gone next year, Hester, Dye, or Viney will be a starting CB. It’s good to see what they can do in game situations. There’s still enough season to make burning the redshirt worth it even if you believe we have no shot at a bowl game.

According to the official stats

He’s played in 3 games and made two tackles…

Good find

Thanks. I guess that makes the discussion mute.

Can't you

still play in some games, if it is only a limited number of plays and still be able to redshirt that season?

by turs12 on Oct 1, 2008 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I believe it's up to the third game of the season

So if he plays in the next game, then he can’t redshirt this season.

Only if it's after before the 4th game

AND due to injury. You can’t play him, then decide you’d rather use a redshirt.

With or without a bowl shot

We want to give our best shot to win EACH AND EVERY time we take the field. That means playing our best players, whatever year they may be. Worrying about preserving redshirts is a luxury winning teams have, but we’re still trying to get there.
Winning cultures are built by focusing on doing your best to win every time you play, not looking to next year after our fourth game.

methinks

forget redshirt status, if a freshman is playing better than an upperclassmen in practice throw them in. i can’t understand how norris is still lining up at cb this year. i cringe everytime i see braids and arms flailing
